Book Synopsis Humor in Contemporary Junior Literature by : Julie Cross
Download or read book Humor in Contemporary Junior Literature written by Julie Cross and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new book, Julie Cross examines the intricacies of textual humor in contemporary junior literature, using the tools of literary criticism and humor theory. Cross investigates the dialectical paradoxes of humor and debunks the common belief in oppositional binaries of ‘simple’ versus ‘complex’ humor. The varied combinations of so-called high and low forms of humor within junior texts for young readers, who are at such a crucial stage of their reading and social development, provide a valuable commentary upon the culture and values of contemporary western society, making the book of considerable interest to scholars of both children’s literature and childhood studies. Cross explores the ways in which the changing content, forms and functions of the many varied combinations of humor in junior texts, including the Lemony Snickett series, reveal societal attitudes towards young children and childhood. The new compounds of seemingly paradoxical high and low forms of humor, in texts for developing readers from the 1960s onwards, reflect and contribute to contemporary society’s hesitant and uneven acceptance of the emergent paradigm of children’s rights, abilities, participation and empowerment. Cross identifies four types of potentially subversive/transgressive humor which have emerged since the 1960s which, coupled with the three main theories of humor – relief, superiority and incongruity theories – enables a long-overdue charting of developments in humor within junior texts. Cross also argues that the gradual increase in the compounding of the simple and the complex provide opportunities for young readers to play with ambiguous, complicated ideas, helping them embrace the complexities and contradictions of contemporary life.
Book Synopsis Greater Expectations by : Eve Bearne
Download or read book Greater Expectations written by Eve Bearne and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1995-11-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first two sections of this work consider two questions: what does children's writing reveal about their reading experience and competence?; and how can teachers help children to become more careful and critical readers of their own and other people's writing?. In the third section these questions are placed in a theoretical frame which tackles some of the more fundemental issues of culture, language diversity and gender, the relationship between oracy and literacy and how best to help children for whom literacy is a struggle. The final section gives some practical guidance for developing a full and successful literacy curriculum.

Book Synopsis From the Garden to the Street by : Morag Styles
Download or read book From the Garden to the Street written by Morag Styles and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From John Bunyan's 'country rhimes' to rude chants about Manchester United, from Ted Hughes to Edward Lear, and from William Blake to the Taylor sisters, Morag Styles covers three hundred years of poetry with infectious enthusiasm and a keen critical eye. In this scholarly and fascinating book, she provides an informative account of the history of poetry written for children in Britain and America in the last three centuries. She analyses the major poets, genres and developments over this period, and traces the continuities between the past and the present. Styles asks fundamental questions which have often been left unanswered: What do we mean by children's poetry? Why did such a seemingly small number of women write poetry for children until recently? The author subscribes to the widest possible definition of poetry, and so the reader will find in this book hymns, songs, playground rhymes, raps and verse - whether trivial or profound. From the Garden to the Street will provoke, inform and entertain academics of children's literature, those who teach it in the classroom, and all of us who still take pleasure in the poetry of childhood.

Book Synopsis From Tongue to Text: A New Reading of Children's Poetry by : Debbie Pullinger
Download or read book From Tongue to Text: A New Reading of Children's Poetry written by Debbie Pullinger and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The connection between childhood and poetry runs deep. And yet, poetry written for children has been neglected by criticism and resists prevailing theories of children's literature. Drawing on Walter Ong's theory of orality and on Iain McGilChrist's work on brain function, this book develops a new theoretical framework for the study of children's poetry. From Tongue to Text argues that the poem is a multimodal form that exists in the borderlands between the world of experience and the world of language and between orality and literacy – places that children themselves inhabit. Engaging with a wide range of poetry from nursery rhymes and Christina Rossetti to Michael Rosen and Carol Ann Duffy, Debbie Pullinger demonstrates how these 'tactful' works are shaped by the dynamics of orality and textuality.
