Book excerpt: Clouds play a critical role in the Earth's climate, general atmospheric circulation, and global water balance. Clouds are essential elements in mesoscale meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, air pollution, atmosphericradiation, and weather forecasting, and thus must be understood by any student or researcher in the atmospheric sciences.Cloud Dynamics provides a skillful and comprehensive examination of the nature of clouds--what they look like and why, how scientists observe them, and the basic dynamics and physics that underlie them. The book describes the mechanics governing each type of cloud that occurs in Earth's atmosphere, and the organization of various types of clouds in larger weather systems such as fronts, thunderstorms, and hurricanes. This book is aimed specifically at graduate students, advanced undergraduates, practicing researchers either already in atmospheric science or moving in from a related scientific field, and operational meteorologists. Some prior knowledge of atmospheric dynamics and physics is helpful, but a thorough overview of the necessary prerequisites is supplied.Key Highlights of This TextProvides a complete treatment of clouds integrating the analysis of air motions with cloud structure, microphysics, and precipitation mechanicsDescribes and explains the basic types of clouds and cloud systems that occur in the atmosphere-fog, stratus, stratocumulus, altocumulus, altostratus, cirrus, thunderstorms, tornadoes, waterspouts, orographically induced clouds, mesoscale convection complexes, hurricanes, fronts, and extratropical cyclonesPresents a photographic guide, presented in the first chapter, linking the examination of each type of cloud with an image to enhance visual retention and understandingSummarizes the fundamentals, both observational and theoretical, of atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, cloud microphysics, and radar meteorology, allowing each type of cloud to be examined in depthIntegrates the latest field observations, numerical model simulations, and theorySupplies a theoretical treatment suitable for the advanced undergraduate or graduate level

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays on the ecology, biodiversity, and restoration of the Texas Hill Country. For most of five decades, evolutionary biologist David Hillis has studied the biodiversity of the Texas Hill Country. Since the 1990s, he has worked to restore the natural beauty and diversity of his Mason County ranch, the Double Helix. In his excursions around his ranch and across the Edwards Plateau, Hillis came to realize how little most people know about the plants and animals around them or their importance to our everyday lives. He began thinking about how natural history is connected to our enjoyment of life, especially in a place as beautiful and beloved as the Hill Country, which, not coincidentally, happens to be one of the most biodiverse parts of Texas. Featuring short nontechnical essays accompanied by vivid color photos, Armadillos to Ziziphus is a charming and casual introduction to the environment of the region. Whether walking the pasture with his Longhorn cattle, explaining the ecological significance of microscopic organisms in springtime mud puddles, or marveling at the local Ziziphus (aka Lotebush, a spiny shrub), Hillis guides first-time visitors and long-term residents alike in an appreciation for the Hill Country’s natural beauty and diversity.

Jam-packed with thought-provoking mathematical mysteries, puzzles, and games, Wonders of Numbers will enchant even the most left-brained of readers. Hosted by the quirky Dr. Googol--who resides on a remote island and occasionally collaborates with Clifford Pickover--Wonders of Numbers focuses on creativity and the delight of discovery. Here is a potpourri of common and unusual number theory problems of varying difficulty--each presented in brief chapters that convey to readers the essence of the problem rather than its extraneous history. Peppered throughout with illustrations that clarify the problems, Wonders of Numbers also includes fascinating "math gossip." How would we use numbers to communicate with aliens? Check out Chapter 30. Did you know that there is a Numerical Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder? You'll find it in Chapter 45. From the beautiful formula of India's most famous mathematician to the Leviathan number so big it makes a trillion look small, Dr. Googol's witty and straightforward approach to numbers will entice students, educators, and scientists alike to pick up a pencil and work a problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a case study of an outbreak of severe local storms that produced several tornadoes and extensive large hail in Oklahoma on 26 May 1963. Several authors have combined to describe the organization, structure, and evolution of these storms from a number of points of view. The storms are analyzed on four different size scales: (1) as products of their large-scale environment, (2) as members of a mesoscale system or family unit, (3) as individual evolving cells, and (4) as tornado and hail factories, with the emphasis on the tornadoes and the hailstones themselves. Data are obtained from conventional synoptic and mesosynoptic networks, visual and photographic observations, surface weather surveys, weather radars, sferics detectors, balloon tracks, radioactivity measurements in precipitation, and hailstone thin sections. Simple models are presented describing the airflow, structure and life cycle of individual severe local storms. (Author)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hands-on, code-based guide to leveraging Julia in a variety of scientific and data-driven scenarios Key Features Augment your basic computing skills with an in-depth introduction to Julia Focus on topic-based approaches to scientific problems and visualisation Build on prior knowledge of programming languages such as Python, R, or C/C++ Purchase of the print or Kindle book includes a free PDF eBook Book DescriptionJulia is a well-constructed programming language which was designed for fast execution speed by using just-in-time LLVM compilation techniques, thus eliminating the classic problem of performing analysis in one language and translating it for performance in a second. This book is a primer on Julia’s approach to a wide variety of topics such as scientific computing, statistics, machine learning, simulation, graphics, and distributed computing. Starting off with a refresher on installing and running Julia on different platforms, you’ll quickly get to grips with the core concepts and delve into a discussion on how to use Julia with various code editors and interactive development environments (IDEs). As you progress, you’ll see how data works through simple statistics and analytics and discover Julia's speed, its real strength, which makes it particularly useful in highly intensive computing tasks. You’ll also and observe how Julia can cooperate with external processes to enhance graphics and data visualization. Finally, you will explore metaprogramming and learn how it adds great power to the language and establish networking and distributed computing with Julia. By the end of this book, you’ll be confident in using Julia as part of your existing skill set. What you will learn Develop simple scripts in Julia using the REPL, code editors, and web-based IDEs Get to grips with Julia’s type system, multiple dispatch, metaprogramming, and macro development Interact with data files, tables, data frames, SQL, and NoSQL databases Delve into statistical analytics, linear programming, and optimization problems Create graphics and visualizations to enhance modeling and simulation in Julia Understand Julia's main approaches to machine learning, Bayesian analysis, and AI Who this book is for This book is not an introduction to computer programming, but a practical guide for developers who want to enhance their basic knowledge of Julia, or those wishing to augment their skill set by adding Julia to their existing roster of programming languages. Familiarity with a scripting language such as Python or R, or a compiled language such as C/C++, C# or Java, is a prerequisite.
