One day, as I sat in the corner of a dimly lit pub reading a book of haiku, most of which were random nonsense, the idea hit me. Why not write a book of haiku that provided people with some take away sense of usefulness and satisfaction? A book of haiku with meaning and purpose that some might read and think to themselves, "Wow. This really 'speaks' to me". A collection of haiku that might brighten one's day, change a particular course, or even alter a certain mindset in which you may find yourself.

Here, the poet Patricia Donegan shares her experience of the haiku form as a way of insight that anyone can use to slow down and uncover the beauty of ordinary moments. She presents 108 haiku poems—on themes such as honesty, transience, and compassion—and offers commentary on each as an impetus to meditation and as a key to unlocking the wonder in what we find right before us.

It was a new way to experience life, and find peace and happiness in troubling times, one haiku at a time. Haiku poetry inspires beauty, and insights in often overlooked and ignored ordinary moments. It is a simple tool to increase your awareness and compassion toward life, and help you slow down. In this collection, he presents 188 haiku poems-themes range from food and nature, to love and relationships. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE GREAT BIG BOOK OF HAIKU: 365 Haiku Poems is a poetry anthology for adult readers. It is a satire on adulthood in that the older we get, the less we live life in the moment. The design of this text is such that there are 365 poems, one for every day of the year. Instead of writing a book of poems for children to read one each night at bedtime, they are for adults to read one each morning of the year upon waking up. Setting a vision for your day, you are now conscious of each moment you're participating in. A haiku poem is based on a single moment in time, and that's what gives it personality. This personality is what will inspire you to live more in the present. The structure of a haiku poem is short, only three lines, containing 5 syllables, then 7, and then 5 again. This addition and then subtraction of an even number using a base of odd numbers also reflects the moral of this story in that balance is thought of as a binary, but in life there are much more than only two sides. Each poem was written by starting with a brainstorm on the most intense moment of the day. Every day, for one year, I wrote down the most intense moment or moments I had. Positive and negative. I scrapbooked each card of moment(s) using keywords and images from magazines so that when I returned to them, I would have a lot of inspiration. Then, the following year, I turned them into haiku poems. This collection took more than two years to create, because after that I had to type them all up, edit them, and secure the rest of the book's structure. This anthology is my gift to every adult who seeks solace in the art of poetry.

Book excerpt: This new volume by the much-loved poet Sonia Sanchez, her first in over a decade, is music to the ears: a collection of haiku that celebrates the gifts of life and mourns the deaths of revered African American figures in the worlds of music, literature, art, and activism. In her verses, we hear the sounds of Max Roach "exploding in the universe," the "blue hallelujahs" of the Philadelphia Murals, and the voice of Odetta "thundering out of the earth." Sanchez sings the praises of contemporaries whose poetic alchemy turns "words into gems": Maya Angelou, Richard Long, and Toni Morrison. And she pays homage to peace workers and civil rights activists from Rosa Parks and Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm to Brother Damu, founder of the National Black Environmental Justice Network. Often arranged in strings of twelve or more, the haiku flow one into the other in a steady song of commemoration. Sometimes deceptively simple, her lyrics hold a very powerful load of emotion and meaning. There are intimate verses here for family and friends, verses of profound loss and silence, of courage and resilience. Sanchez is innovative, composing haiku in new forms, including a section of moving two-line poems that reflect on the long wake of 9/11. In a brief and personal opening essay, the poet explains her deep appreciation for haiku as an art form. With its touching portraits and by turns uplifting and heartbreaking lyrics, Morning Haiku contains some of Sanchez's freshest, most poignant work.

Book excerpt: I started writing these poems in May 2016 as a way of distilling issues I often think about. I was seeking clarity of thought in preparation for visits with a therapist. Some poems are memories. Some are issues I struggle with in my life. Some are lessons I need to learn. Some are moments I want to hold dear. Nonreaders can read and understand the poems because they are simple and very clear. Even rereading is pleasurable, in the same way its enjoyable to play a piano piece learned many years ago. The issues are timeless for people of all ages. Hopefully, a reader will be reminded of a similar experience in his or her life. These are topics of the human condition as seen from a lifetime of experiences of joy, sadness, lessons to be learned, and lessons to share. It incorporates mindfulness and meditation and encourages peace of mind, personal growth, and honesty. The book represents courage to look at reality without pressure for perfection and with hope for being your best and brightest each day.

Book excerpt: These 26 delicious scenes retrieved from childhood help us, young and old, to revisit those times and to share them anew. Not the cookie-cutter haiku you'll find in similar books, Liz Crocket's work will introduce your child (and perhaps you!) to the way contemporary haiku has evolved over the past half-century, and perhaps inspire you to capture your own special moments in the same fashion. -- Jim Kacian, Editor-in-Chief, Haiku in English: The First Hundred Years Elizabeth Crocket has filled this book with happy stories from nature, lessons on life, great ideas for children to try, and lots of family love. The 26 haiku--as many as the letters in the alphabet--present fine examples of alliteration "birthday bat", expression "cutting teeth", suspense "suddenly..." and hinge questions, "do you love me?" Short and simple to read on 3-lines following the form of traditional Japanese poetry, these haiku can inspire children from as early as two to become creative writers too. - David McMurray (Asahi Haikuist columnist in Japan)

This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This humble book takes you on a unique adventure of spiritual healing in the Great White North of Michigan. Through poetry and humor, the author shares the story of his healing, redemption, and growing closer to his Creator. This book is like nothing you have read before and, prayerfully, will inspire you to find the same healing he found. Peace be to you! These poems are not only endearing because they capture the spirit and beauty of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, but they speak to the heart because they elevate the form beyond mere physicality, platitudes, and superficial spirituality to present the truth of who God is and who we are in relation to him. The strikingly simple haiku reaches its fullest potential when wed to the truth of God's love for his wayward children as expressed in the self-giving sacrifice of his Son, in the beauty of his creation, and in the fullness of the faith of the Catholic Church. Obviously the fruit of deep prayer, this collection can bring the reader to the same place of contemplation, healing, and gratitude for God's many gifts to us. -Deacon Jeremiah Mason P.M.R.M. Messing's journey from brokenness to healing is told eloquently through both prose and poetry. He reminds us that God loves us - each and every one of us - and that it's never too late for us to run to Him. God never gives up on us. Mr. Messing juxtaposes the beauty of God's creation in Michigan's Upper Peninsula with haiku, an ancient form of Japanese poetry, to paint a vivid picture of his journey and a glimpse into his soul. -Catholic Educator Christy Miron

Book excerpt: At the tail end of 2018, in an attempt to foster some much-needed positivity, MIKE DIGRAZIA decided to start journaling. To make things interesting, he decided to document his thoughts in haiku form in lieu of standard journal entries. He proceeded to write at least one haiku journal entry every night for just over a year before closing the book and packing it away. When he later found that journal in a battered moving box, a lot had changed... for everyone. It was January, 2021 and COVID-19 had ravaged, and was continuing to ravage the world, causing unfathomable anxiety and hardship to the planet's population. While scanning through his haiku journal for the first time in over a year, he found some nuggets of optimistic positivity and truth in what he'd written, and it was just what he needed to get himself back on track in these uncertain times. So he decided to share this collection of 240 haiku journal entries with you. In hope that it might inspire a sense of optimism and positivity in a time rife with hardship and uncertainty.
