Book Synopsis Introducción a la lingüística hispánica by : José Ignacio Hualde
Download or read book Introducción a la lingüística hispánica written by José Ignacio Hualde and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-03 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written entirely in Spanish, this is the ideal introduction to Spanish linguistics for students. Using clear explanations, it covers all the basic concepts required to study the structural aspects of the Spanish language - phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax - as well as the history of Spanish, its dialects and linguistic variation. This second edition incorporates new features designed to enhance its usefulness for classroom teaching: chapters have been added on the sociolinguistics of Spanish in the USA, and on semantics and pragmatics. The chapter on syntax has been considerably expanded. Numerous exercises have been added throughout the book, as well as a new glossary to help with technical terms.
Book Synopsis New Directions in Hispanic Linguistics by : Alejandro Cortazar
Download or read book New Directions in Hispanic Linguistics written by Alejandro Cortazar and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses some lacunae in Hispanic linguistic research by focusing on new scholarly directions, exploring understudied topics as well as speech communities, and presenting new takes on relevant linguistic and sociocultural issues. This publication answers questions which have emerged as a result of the rapid increase in Hispanic linguistic research since the latter part of the twentieth century or that have remained open in spite of it. With the rapid growth of Hispanic Linguistics during the 21st century, the topics included in this volume are representative of the breadth, vitality, and interdisciplinarity of contemporary linguistic scholarship. They also reflect that linguistics, in general, has become more methodologically sophisticated. This book is comprised of twelve chapters divided into three parts. Part I addresses language ideology and language contact issues that are embedded in important sociolinguistic and cultural topics chronologically spanning from the 16th century to the present. Although these issues take place in Spain, the United States, Turkey and Ecuador, they pertain ideologically to all corners of the Hispanic World and beyond. Part II is devoted to pragmatics and language variation with topics that transport us to Colombia, Mexico, Spain and Venezuela. The study of politeness strategies shows how Spanish speakers reduce social distance between interlocutors as they make conversation a pleasant and cooperative meeting place. Concurrently, sociolinguistic innovations reveal interesting parallels among several speech communities. Part III explores linguistic variation as it relates to theoretical, structural, and instructional issues. Although these topics are analyzed based mainly on linguistic usage in Bolivia, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Panama, and Spain – as with the rest of this volume – their relevance reaches far beyond the confines of the Hispanic World. This book is unique in multiple ways and complements a number of existing publications.

Book Synopsis Popular Texts in English by : Antonio Ballesteros González
Download or read book Popular Texts in English written by Antonio Ballesteros González and published by Univ de Castilla La Mancha. This book was released on 2001 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises a collection of articles devoted to the academic study of popular texts in English. Authors analyse genres which had been habitually looked down on by canonical approaches to literature and art. They take into serious consideration forms like horror literature, the gothic, fantasy, de-tective fiction, science fiction, best-sellers, films and television series of different kinds... among some other representations of what conservative scholars had been considering as marginal. The referential richness of the perspectives reflected here demonstrates that popular texts can be enjoyable for readers and audiences, at the same time that they can be significant in order to reach a better understanding of our culture and ourselves at the beginning of a new millennium.
Book Synopsis Colonialism and Narrative in Puerto Rico by : Victor C. Simpson
Download or read book Colonialism and Narrative in Puerto Rico written by Victor C. Simpson and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the effect of the colonial experience on the protagonists in the novels of Pedro Juan Soto, a renowned author of the Puerto Rican «Generation of 1950». Arguing - in keeping with Soto's generational and personal pessimism - that the protagonists are anti-heroes who struggle with their environment and succumb to it in different ways, it acknowledges that the themes of the Puerto Rican novel are firmly rooted in the island's reality, and offers a cogent review of the literary and socio-political context against which Soto's work must be understood. It also inserts Soto into the canon of post-colonial writers while foregrounding his realist approach to characterization, which is the author's means of articulating his social concerns.

The book includes an introduction to the volume by Ana Roca and a history of US Spanish research by John M. Lipski.
