Book Synopsis Habitus in Habitat II by : Sabine Flach
Download or read book Habitus in Habitat II written by Sabine Flach and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Which are the aspects of cognition not yet focused on as such by brain research? How can one deal with them? This book sheds light on the other sides of cognition, on what they mean for forms and figurations of subjective, cultural and social understanding. In examining nuances, exceptions, changes, emotions and absence of emotions, automatized actions and meaningful relations, states of minds and states of bodies, the volume searches new approaches to these phenomena in discussing the relation between the habitus - the habits and behavioral attitudes involved in cognition - and its embeddedness in a habitat. By opening a dialogue between artistic knowledge and the sciences, Other Sides of Cognition investigates novel avenues and concepts within science and research. At a Berlin-based conference: Other Sides of Cognition, scholars gathered from various disciplines to discuss these issues. This book broadens perspectives on the interdisciplinary field encompassing perception, action and epistemic formations. It offers a new view on the related field of habitus and cognition.
Book Synopsis Our Better Angels by : Jonathan Reckford
Download or read book Our Better Angels written by Jonathan Reckford and published by St. Martin's Essentials. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspiring and insightful, Our Better Angels: Seven Simple Virtues That Will Change Your Life and the World celebrates the shared principles that unite and enable us to overcome life’s challenges together. “When the waters rise, so do our better angels.”—President Jimmy Carter Jonathan Reckford, the CEO of Habitat for Humanity, has seen time and again the powerful benefits that arise when people from all walks of life work together to help one another. In this uplifting book, he shares true stories of people involved with Habitat as volunteers and future homeowners who embody seven timeless virtues—kindness, community, empowerment, joy, respect, generosity, and service—and shows how we can all practice these to improve the quality of our own lives as well as those around us. A Vietnam veteran finds peace where he was once engaged in war. An impoverished single mother offers her family’s time and energy to enrich their neighbors’ lives. A Zambian family of nine living in a makeshift tent makes room to shelter even more. A teenager grieving for his mother honors her love and memory by ensuring other people have a place to call home. A former president of the United States leads by example with a determined work ethic that motivates everyone around him to be the best version of themselves. These stories, and many others, illustrate how virtues become values, how cooperation becomes connection, and how even the smallest act of compassion can encourage actions that transform the world around us. Here are tales that will make readers laugh and cry and embrace with passion the calling of our better angels to change the way we take care of ourselves, our families, our communities, and the world.

Download or read book Implementing the Outcomes of the Second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements, Habitat II: written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements, known as Habitat II, representatives from 171 countries discussed an issue of global concern: shelter & human settlements in a rapidly globalizing world. Participating countries, including Canada, adopted the Habitat Agenda, a commitment to improve living conditions in the world's cities, towns, & villages. The Agenda offers a framework of goals, principles, strategies, & commitments to guide local, national, & international efforts to turn the Agenda's vision into reality. This report has been prepared to measure progress relative to a number of commitments & recommendations in the Habitat Agenda. Qualitative & quantitative data addressing a series of identified indicators are provided, where possible, for Canada as a whole and for each of five major urban areas: Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, & Halifax. The introduction reviews the Canadian approach to housing. The main section is organized in chapters covering six themes: shelter; social development & eradication of poverty; environmental management; economic development; governance; and international co-operation. Within each chapter, the first section addresses the identified indicators for the chapter topic. The second & third sections review key federal & provincial government initiatives relevant to the chapter topic. The fourth section summarizes selected municipal/local best practices relating to the chapter topic. The final section synthesizes stakeholder views on the topic of the chapter, derived from a series of interviews and reflecting a diversity of viewpoints on a number of key issues. The appendix contains a report prepared by the Quebec government that reviews the implementation of the Habitat Agenda from that province's perspective.

More than any other earth system, coral reefs sit at a disciplinary crossroads. Most recently, they have reached another crossroads - fundamental changes in their bio-physical structure greater than those of previous centuries or even millennia. Effective strategies to mitigate recent trends will require an approach that embraces the myriad perspectives from across the scientific landscape, but will also need a mechanism to transform scientific understanding into social will and political implementation.
