Book Synopsis A History of the Bolivian Labour Movement 1848-1971 by : Guillermo Lora
Download or read book A History of the Bolivian Labour Movement 1848-1971 written by Guillermo Lora and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-18 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an abridgement and translation of Guillermo Lora's five-volume history. It deals with the strengthening and radicalisation of Bolivia's organised labour movement, which culminated in the drastic revolutionary changes of the 1950s. The first half offers a reinterpretation of Bolivian history in the century preceding the revolution, viewed from the perspective of the working class. The second half discusses in more detail the major political events and doctrinal issues of a period in which the author, as secretary of the Trotskyist Partido Obrero Revolucionario, himself frequently played an active part. Despite the radical upheaval that occurred in the fifties and the mobilisation of broad sectors of the population around such radical objectives as direct property seizures, union-nominated ministers and union, military and worker control, the labour movement was unable to maintain its conquests in the 1960s. The concluding chapters describe the period of renewed military repression and the continuing efforts of the labour movement to resist.

Book Synopsis Bolivia's Radical Tradition by : S. S‡ndor John
Download or read book Bolivia's Radical Tradition written by S. S‡ndor John and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2009-11-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 2005, following a series of convulsive upheavals that saw the overthrow of two presidents in three years, Bolivian peasant leader Evo Morales became the first Indian president in South American history. Consequently, according to S. S‡ndor John, Bolivia symbolizes new shifts in Latin America, pushed by radical social movements of the poor, the dispossessed, and indigenous people once crossed off the maps of ÒofficialÓ history. But, as John explains, Bolivian radicalism has a distinctive genealogy that does not fit into ready-made patterns of the Latin American left. According to its author, this book grew out of a desire to answer nagging questions about this unusual place. Why was Bolivia home to the most persistent and heroically combative labor movement in the Western Hemisphere? Why did this movement take root so deeply and so stubbornly? What does the distinctive radical tradition of Trotskyism in Bolivia tell us about the past fifty years there, and what about the explosive developments of more recent years? To answer these questions, John clearly and carefully pieces together a fragmented past to show a part of Latin American radical history that has been overlooked for far too long. Based on years of research in archives and extensive interviews with labor, peasant, and student activistsÑas well as Chaco War veterans and prominent political figuresÑthe book brings together political, social, and cultural history, linking the origins of Bolivian radicalism to events unfolding today in the country that calls itself Òthe heart of South America.Ó

Book Synopsis Army Politics in Cuba, 1898-1958 by : Louis A. Pérez Jr.
Download or read book Army Politics in Cuba, 1898-1958 written by Louis A. Pérez Jr. and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 1976-03-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis A. Perez examines the founding of the national army in Cuba, the rise and fall of Cuban army preeminence during the Machado regime, the bizarre army seizure of power in 1933, which resulted in the collapse of the officer corps, and follows the dominance of the army until the revolution of 1958. He shows that the Cuban political order rested on the stability of the army, which itself grew increasingly estranged from national traditions and eventually became the tool of a clique of political leaders, only to fall to rebel forces during the revolution.
