Book excerpt: HABITAT CLASSIFICATION IN THE GULF OF MAINE A Review of Schemes and a Discussion of Related Regional Issues By P. T. McDougall with Marianne Janowicz and Rachael Franks Taylor A publication of the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment Habitat Conservation Subcommittee December 2007. [...] The descriptors are an understanding of the function, context, form, a set of attributes that help explain the habitat and and usefulness of each scheme in addressing the how it functions. [...] The data a depth class (200) corresponding to the epipelagic used in the analysis covered a 12-month time series, zone of 60-200m depths, and a substrate sediment class so the zones represent groupings of similar regimes of of sand (30). Book Synopsis Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat by : National Research Council
Download or read book Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-09 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns over the potential ecological effects of fishing have increased with the expansion of fisheries throughout the marine waters of the United States. Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.

Book Synopsis Birds and Habitat by : Robert J. Fuller
Download or read book Birds and Habitat written by Robert J. Fuller and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The successful conservation of bird species relies upon our understanding of their habitat use and requirements. In the coming decades the importance of such knowledge will only grow as climate change, the development of new energy sources and the needs of a growing human population intensify the, already significant, pressure on the habitats that birds depend on. Drawing on valuable recent advances in our understanding of bird-habitat relationships, this book provides the first major review of avian habitat selection in over twenty years. It offers a synthesis of concepts, patterns and issues that will interest students, researchers and conservation practitioners. Spatial scales ranging from landscape to habitat patch are covered, and examples of responses to habitat change are examined. European landscapes are the main focus, but the book has far wider significance to similar habitats worldwide, with examples and relevant material also drawn from North America and Australia.
Book Synopsis Marine Ecoregions of North America by : Tara A. C. Wilkinson
Download or read book Marine Ecoregions of North America written by Tara A. C. Wilkinson and published by Instituto Nacional de Ecología. This book was released on 2009 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes and maps the North American oceanic and coastal waters, classifying them into 24 marine ecoregions, according to oceanographic features and geographically distinct assemblages of species. Descriptive profiles of the ecoregions describe their key features, in terms of physical, oceanographic, and biological characteristics, as well as human impacts. The book is intended to provide a framework for collecting and organizing information on these regions, and to encourage a sense of joint responsibility and a collaborative strategic approach to dealing with the challenges of conserving the regions' shared oceans.

Book Synopsis Seafloor Geomorphology as Benthic Habitat by : Peter T Harris
Download or read book Seafloor Geomorphology as Benthic Habitat written by Peter T Harris and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 1076 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seafloor Geomorphology as Benthic Habitat: GeoHab Atlas of Seafloor Geomorphic Features and Benthic Habitats, Second Edition, provides an updated synthesis of seabed geomorphology and benthic habitats. This new edition includes new case studies from all geographic areas and habitats that were not included in the previous edition, including the Arctic, Asia, Africa and South America. Using multibeam sonar, the benthic ecology of submarine features, such as fjords, sand banks, coral reefs, seamounts, canyons, mud volcanoes and spreading ridges is revealed in unprecedented detail. This timely release offers new understanding for researchers in Marine Biodiversity, environmental managers, ecologists, and more. Explores the relationships between seabed geomorphology, oceanography and biology Provides global case studies which directly focus on habitats, including both biological and physical data Describes ways to detect change in the marine environment (change in the condition of benthic habitats), a critical aspect for judging the performance of policies and legislation
