Book excerpt: Located between three European capital cities, Győr has to work hard to attract investment and jobs. The Hungarian city has set itself up to attract innovative companies, creating new urban values such as education-based innovation, a high-quality urban environment and a lively cultural sphere. Here's how a "secondary city" builds on its industrial past even as it breaks away from its dependence on it. Győr is a Hungarian "secondary city" close to Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. These three capital cities attract most of the development potential in the area, making it difficult for smaller cities such as Győr to attract the headquarters of international companies or to develop large-scale new urban areas. Győr's response has been to focus on "smart specialisation" in line with its broader innovation-based development concept. With 125,000 residents, Győr is located in north-west Hungary, 40 km east of the Austrian border and exactly halfway between Budapest and Vienna. The city boasts a special geographical position within the triangle of three European capital cities (Bratislava being the third).

As the chapters unfolded, life in the city changed, and soon it didn't even seem so cold or far away any more. People listened to the story and realised that the city wasn't quite what they expected. They started to tell the story to each other about how the city had created a magical unicorn factory... Here's how Stockholm built a narrative for itself – and backed it up with urban development that was innovative and sustainable.

Book Synopsis Postsocialist Shrinking Cities by : Chung-Tong Wu
Download or read book Postsocialist Shrinking Cities written by Chung-Tong Wu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comparative analysis of shrinking cities in a broad range of postsocialist countries within the so-called Global East, a liminal space between North and South. While shrinking cities have received increased scholarly attention in the past decades, theoretical, and empirical research has remained predominantly centered on the Global North. This volume brings to the fore a range of new perspectives on urban shrinkage, identifying commonalities, differences, and policy experiences across a very diverse and vivid region with its various legacies and contemporary controversial developments. With chapters written by leading experts in the field, insider views assist in decolonizing urban theory. Specifically, the book includes chapters on shrinking cities in China, Russia, and postsocialist Europe, presenting comparative discussions within countries and crossnational cases on theoretical and policy implications. The book will be of interest to students and scholars researching urban studies, urban geography, urban planning, urban politics and policy, urban sociology, and urban development.
Book Synopsis Inequality and Uneven Development in the Post-Crisis World by : Sebastiano Fadda
Download or read book Inequality and Uneven Development in the Post-Crisis World written by Sebastiano Fadda and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years following the financial crash, two issues have become central to the debate in economics: inequality and the uneven nature of sustainable development. These two issues are at the core of this book which aims to explain three key questions: why inequality has increased so much in the last three decades; why most advanced economies are stagnating or are experiencing moderate economic growth; and why, even where economic growth is occurring, the quality of that growth is questioned. Inequality and Uneven Development in the Post-Crisis World is divided into three parts. The first part concerns the theoretical aspects of inequality, and ethical issues regarding economics and equality. The second part explores empirical evidence and policy suggestions drawing on the uneven levels of development and unprecedented levels of inequality experienced among advanced economies in the context of global financial capitalism. The third part focuses on sustainable development issues such as full employment, social costs of global trade liberalization, environmental sustainability and ecological issues. Along with inequality these issues are central for capitalism and for economic development. This volume is of interest to those who study political economy, sustainable development and social inequality.
Book Synopsis Transformations in Hungary by : Peter Meusburger
Download or read book Transformations in Hungary written by Peter Meusburger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first decade after the turn towards democracy and market economy, Hungary's society experienced profound changes that affected its regions, towns, villages and individual places in different ways. This is documented by thirteen essays that analyse related political, legal, institutional, and socio-economic structures and processes in time and space in order to contribute to a further understanding of Hungary's ongoing transformation processes and its current situation as one of the leading candidates for EU membership. The topics include constitutive elements of a modern market economy such as banking, foreign direct investment, entrepreneurship, knowledge resources, the labour market, and the housing market. Further essays explore education and income structures, the poverty situation, post-communist voting behaviour, regional and urban development as well as Hungary's cross-border co-operations. With regard to European integration processes, the role of Budapest within the European city system and Hungary's economic situation within Europe are discussed. Drawing together comprehensive empirical data and a great variety of viewpoints, this collection of essays offers innovative examples of the application of different theoretical approaches to studies of economy and society in general, and transformation studies in particular.
Download or read book Twin Cities written by John Garrard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dynamic international collection provides a comprehensive overview of twin cities on administrative and international borders across the world. Drawing on contemporary and historical examples, it documents constant and changing features of twinned communities over time. The chapters explore a variety of urban formations including independent cities located side-by-side; cities that have merged over decades or even centuries and those projected to merge; cities partitioned by treaties and cities duplicated in pursuit of better security, intensified trade or both between neighbouring countries. From Europe to Africa, North America to the Middle East, South America to Asia, this book focuses on relationships between cities, citizens and municipal/international borders. A cartographical contents and editorial commentary guide readers through diverse contributions. The authors ask how far cities are changing or remaining constant in the context of conurbanisation, Europeanisation and globalization. The book provides a glimpse into the variety of roles twin cities can play globally: from laboratories of integration and para-diplomatic actors to economic and cultural brokers. This is a valuable, engaging resource for researchers in the fields of geography, urban studies, border studies, international relations and global development. It will be of great use to individuals involved in twin-city initiatives and general readers.
Book Synopsis Tourism in National Capitals and Global Change by : Robert Maitland
Download or read book Tourism in National Capitals and Global Change written by Robert Maitland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time of increasing city competition, national capitals are at the forefront of efforts to gain competitive advantage for themselves and their nation, to project a distinctive and positive image and to score well in global city league tables. They are frequently their country’s main tourist gateway, and their success in attracting visitors is inextricably linked with that of the nation. They attract not just leisure visitors; they are especially important in other growing tourism markets, for example, as centres of power they feature strongly in business tourism, as academic centres they are important for educational tourism, and they frequently host global events such as the Olympic Games. And there are more of them: first, the number of capitals has grown as the number of nation-states has increased and, secondly, pressures for devolution mean more cities are seeking national capital status, even when they are not at the head of independent states. We need to understand tourism in capitals better – but there has been little research in the past. This book develops new insights as it explores the phenomenon of capital city tourism, and uses recent research to examine the appeal of ‘capitalness’ to tourists, and explore developments in capitals across the world. This book was published as a special issue of Current Issues in Tourism.
