Download or read book White Mischief written by James Fox and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The riveting true story of decadence, deception, and murder among British aristocrats in colonial Kenya In 1941, with London burning in the Blitz, a group of hedonistic English nobles partied shamelessly in Kenya. Far removed from falling bombs, the wealthy elites of “Happy Valley” indulged in morphine, alcohol, and unrestricted sex, often with their friends’ spouses. But the party turned sinister in the early hours of a January morning for Josslyn Hay, Lord Erroll, who had been enjoying the favors of the beautiful young wife of a middle-aged neighbor. Hay was found dead, a bullet in his brain. The murder shocked the close-knit community of wealthy expatriates in Nairobi and shined a harsh light on their louche lifestyle. Three decades later, author James Fox researched the slaying of Lord Erroll, an unsolved crime still sheathed in a thick cloud of rumor and innuendo. What he discovered was both unsettling and luridly compelling. White Mischief is a spellbinding true-crime classic, a tale of privileged excess and the wages of sin, and an account of one writer’s determined effort to crack a cold and craven killing.

Book Synopsis The Life and Mysterious Death of Poet and Intelligence Agent Stephen Haggard, 1911–1943 by : Ross Davies
Download or read book The Life and Mysterious Death of Poet and Intelligence Agent Stephen Haggard, 1911–1943 written by Ross Davies and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Actor, memoirist, novelist, playwright and poet, Stephen Haggard was a highly individual figure in the English literature and theatre of the 1930s and Second World War. Haggard was born in Guatemala City in 1911, the son of a British colonial officer – who was a nephew of H. Rider Haggard – and his French-Canadian wife. He died in mysterious circumstances in 1943 while serving with British Army Intelligence in the Middle East. Ross Davies’s biography retraces Stephen Haggard’s brief yet vivid and crowded life and work. From a colonial childhood and education in England, the Haggard story moves on to prewar theatre studies in Munich, stardom on the London and New York stages and from there to service with the Army, the BBC, the Special Operations Executive and its rival Political Warfare Executive. Davies shows that Haggard felt verse to be his vital outlet, artistic and emotional, although he did not seek publication until the outbreak of Hitler’s war. Wartime poems such "The Tear" and "Lotus" struck a chord with the many other young men and women who had to set aside civilian life, and Haggard's widow Morna collected the verse for publication with his memoir I’ll Go to Bed at Noon (1944). In this book, Davies traces a fascinating life story that has been largely lost from view and makes a convincing case for Haggard's important contribution to the interwar literary and cultural scene.

Download or read book Agent M written by Henry Hemming and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating, improbable true story of Maxwell Knight -- the great MI5 spymaster and inspiration for the James Bond character M. Maxwell Knight was perhaps the greatest spymaster in history. He did more than anyone in his era to combat the rising threat of fascism in Britain during World War II, in spite of his own history inside this movement. He was also truly eccentric -- a thrice-married jazz aficionado who kept a menagerie of exotic pets -- and almost totally unqualified for espionage. Yet he had a gift for turning practically anyone into a fearless secret agent. Knight's work revolutionized British intelligence, pioneering the use of female agents, among other accomplishments. In telling Knight's remarkable story, Agent M also reveals for the first time in print the names and stories of some of the men and women recruited by Knight, on behalf of MI5, who were asked to infiltrate the country's most dangerous political organizations. Drawing on a vast array of original sources, Agent M reveals not only the story of one of the world's greatest intelligence operators, but the sacrifices and courage required to confront fascism during a nation's darkest time.

Book Synopsis Celts, Romans, Britons by : Francesca Kaminski-Jones
Download or read book Celts, Romans, Britons written by Francesca Kaminski-Jones and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary volume of essays examines the real and imagined role of Classical and Celtic influence in the history of British identity formation, from late antiquity to the present day. In so doing, it makes the case for increased collaboration between the fields of Classical reception and Celtic studies, and opens up new avenues of investigation into the categories Celtic and Classical, which are presented as fundamentally interlinked and frequently interdependent. In a series of chronologically arranged chapters, beginning with the post-Roman Britons and ending with the 2016 Brexit referendum, it draws attention to the constructed and historically contingent nature of the Classical and the Celtic, and explores how notions related to both categories have been continuously combined and contrasted with one another in relation to British identities. Britishness is revealed as a site of significant Celtic-Classical cross-pollination, and a context in which received ideas about Celts, Romans, and Britons can be fruitfully reconsidered, subverted, and reformulated. Responding to important scholarly questions that are best addressed by this interdisciplinary approach, and extending the existing literature on Classical reception and national identity by treating the Celtic as an equally relevant tradition, the volume creates a new and exciting dialogue between subjects that all too often are treated in isolation, and sets the foundations for future cross-disciplinary conversations.
