Book Synopsis Globalisation, Diaspora and Belonging by : Sharmina Mawani
Download or read book Globalisation, Diaspora and Belonging written by Sharmina Mawani and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term 'identity' has become fashionable, both inside and outside the sphere of academia. It has evolved so that it incorporates both a means of talking about individuality, community, and cohesion, as well as a way to comprehend the interaction between one's experiences of the world and the cultural and historical spheres in which those perceptions are formed. The notion of 'belonging' is complex in nature and the need to belong is a necessity for individuals in society. The creation of a sense of belonging is a multifaceted dynamic process that does not require an individual to select one solitary group to which they may belong. It is through the processes associated with achieving a sense of belonging that individuals shape their identities. This collection focuses upon the experiences of the Gujaratis, an ethnic group in India. The book highlights the unique ways that globalization, migration, language, culture, and 'othering' shape perceptions of belonging. To capture some of the complexities that characterize Gujarati identities, the book is categorized thematically into three sections: (1) Globalization and Migration, (2) Language and Culture, and (3) Inclusion and Exclusion. Each chapter is richly illustrated with excerpts from interviews and narratives from Gujaratis who are attempting to belong and find acceptance in a variety of settings around the world, including Australia, Canada, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Oman, Singapore, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Zanzibar. The book offers an insightful perspective that provides readers with a comprehensive overview of historical and contemporary issues surrounding notions of Gujarati identity.

Download or read book Transnationalism written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-05-20 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with transnationalism and captures its singularity as a generalized phenomenon. The profusion of transnational communities is a factor of fluidity in social orders and represents confrontations between contingencies and basic socio-cultural drives. It has created a new era different from the past at essential respects. This is an age of enriching cultural diversity fraught with threatening risks inextricably linked to contemporary globalization. National sovereignty is eroded from above by global processes, from below by aspirations of sub-national groups, and from the sides - by transnational allegiances. This is the backdrop against which this book delves into the fundamental issues relating to the nature, scope and overall significance of transnationalism.

Book Synopsis Globalization before Its Time by : Chhaya Goswami
Download or read book Globalization before Its Time written by Chhaya Goswami and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2016-02-18 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the Kachchhi traders build on the Gujarat Advantage? In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, during the dying days of the Mughal empire, merchants from Kachchh established a flourishing overseas trade. Building on a rich legacy of free trade in pre-modern times between the many ports of Gujarat and the Middle East, the Kachchhis dealt in pearls, dates, spices and ivory with the faraway lands of Muscat and Zanzibar. The Kachchhi merchants behaved much like today’s venture capitalists. They knew how to grow capital, seek new markets, and create them where they didn’t exist. They also had a phenomenal risk appetite. What they were able to practise was nothing less than the traits of globalization before its time. This new book in The Story of Indian Business series tells their fascinating story.
Book Synopsis Transnational Migration and Home in Older Age by : Katie Walsh
Download or read book Transnational Migration and Home in Older Age written by Katie Walsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the transformations in home lives arising in later life and resulting from global migrations. It provides insight into the ways in which contemporary demographic processes of aging and migration shape the meaning, experience and making of home for those in older age. Chapters explore how home is negotiated in relation to possibilities for return to the "homeland," family networks, aging and health, care cultures and belonging. The book deliberately crosses emerging sub-fields in transnationalism studies by offering case studies on aging labour migrants, retirement migrants, and return migrants, as well as older people affected by the movement of others including family members and migrant care workers. The diversity of people’s experiences of home in later life is fully explored and the impact of social class, gender, and nationality, as well as the corporeal dimensions of older age, are all in evidence.
Book Synopsis The Transnational Family by : Deborah Bryceson
Download or read book The Transnational Family written by Deborah Bryceson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migrant networks, in the form of families, associational ties and social organizations, stretch across the globe, connecting cultures and bridging national boundaries. The effects of this global networking are vast. This book is the first to stand back and explore the impact. Families living outside of their original national boundaries have had, and continue to have, a profound influence over the flow of people, goods, money and information. More in-depth perspectives reveal how immigrants face troubling issues of cultural identity, economic change, political uncertainty and social welfare. From an examination of nineteenth-century transnational families emigrating from Europe, to the Ghanaian Pentecostal diaspora in Europe today, this book combines broadly based analysis with more unusual case studies to reveal the complexities that immigrants and refugees must contend with in their daily lives. What are the experiences of migrant Turkish women living in Germany? In what ways has religion been hybridized amongst West African Muslim migrants in Paris? What are the gender relations and transnational ties amongst Bosnian refugees? Never has such a topic been more relevant. Problems relating to immigrants' and refugees' situations in their adopted countries continue to grow. This book, wide-ranging in its geographical and thematic scope, is a highly important and timely addition to debates on transnational families, immigrants and refugees.
Book Synopsis Indian Transnationalism Online by : Ajaya Kumar Sahoo
Download or read book Indian Transnationalism Online written by Ajaya Kumar Sahoo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Present-day migration takes place in a world characterized by the compression of time and space, with cheaper air travel and the existence of new communication technologies - the internet in particular - making it easier to stay in contact with the places, people and cultures that one has left. This book investigates the online organization of, and exchanges within, the global Indian diaspora. Bringing together research from around the world and presenting studies drawn from the US, Europe and India, it engages with theoretical and methodological debates concerning the shaping and transformation of migrant culture in emerging sites of sociality, and explores issues such as religion, citizenship, nationalism, region and caste as they relate to Indian identity in global, transnational contexts. With detailed empirical case studies showing both how members of the Indian diaspora connect with one other and ’life at home’ and how institutions in India maintain such links, Indian Transnationalism Online sheds light on the ways in which information and communication technology functions as both a catalyst and indicator of contemporary socio-cultural change. As such it will be of interest to sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists and studies of cultural studies working in the areas of migration, transnationalism and ethnic studies.
