Book excerpt: The tango is the king of the Latin dances. The captivating rhythms and seductive melodies of the tango have captured the imaginations of musicians and composers for many years. The tango has even found its place in the world of concert musical literature due to the fine works of composers such as AstorPiazzolla. It is hard to imagine a guitarist today without a number of tangos in his solo repertoire. These 14 tangos were composed to provide tango literature for the plectrum or flatpick guitarist. Of course they may also be performed on theclassic guitar.I would like to make special note of the tango, Lucia. I originally wrote Lucia as a guitar duet. The duet is recorded on my Acoustic Guitar Portraits recording and is also in print in the companion book. I composed a new solo setting for Lucia in this book. I believe these tangos may be performed in concert or recital, for fun oreven on a gig. I hope you enjoy performing them as much as I did composing them! All music in notation and tablature

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In compiling this landmark sourcebook, Finnish guitarists Hannu Annala and Heiki Matlik consulted more than 70 music texts as well as dozens of composer resumes acquired from the musical information centers of several countries. During the writing process, which lasted for more than three years, they received additional information from many modern composers, including Leo Brouwer and Reginald Smith Brindle among others. In addition, several internationally renowned performing guitarists provided valuable information; these include Magnus Andersson (Sweden), Remi Boucher (Canada), Margarita Escarpa (Spain), Aleksander Frauchi (Russia) and David Tanenbaum (USA) among others. The authors' aim was to write a well-structured book with separate chapters for each instrument, such as the Renaissance and Baroque guitar, the Renaissance and Baroque lute, the vihuela, etc. This unique structure enables the reader to easily discover which composers wrote for a certain instrument during any given period. In addition to the composers one would expect to find in such a comprehensive listing, the book documents several historical and modern composers for whom little previous information has been available. the book's list of more than 400 guitar and lute concertos dating from the Baroque era to the present day is a totally unprecedented.Short introductions regarding guitar and lute-like instruments as well as their basic histories are provided at the beginning of the book. the authors hope that the Handbook of Guitar and Lute Composers will serve as a practical guide for both amateurs and professionals, encouraging further study of the history of these instruments and expanding the repertoire heard on today's concert stage.

Book excerpt: Tango music rapidly became a global phenomenon as early as the beginning of the twentieth century, with about 30% of gramophone records made between 1903 and 1910 devoted to it. Its popularity declined between the 1950s and the 1980s but has since risen to new heights. This Companion offers twenty chapters from varying perspectives around music, dance, poetry, and interdisciplinary studies, including numerous visual and audio illustrations in print and on the accompanying webpages. Its multidisciplinary approach demonstrates how different disciplines intersect through performative, historical, ethnographic, sociological, political, and anthropological perspectives. These thematic continuities illuminate diverse international perspectives and highlight how the art form flourished in Argentina, Uruguay and abroad, while tracing its international and cultural impact over the last century. This book is an innovative resource for scholars and students of tango music, particularly those seeking a diverse international perspective on the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection showcases the syncopated piano music of Latin American during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It features Latin rhythms, which are really African rhythms brought to the Americas by slaves and applied to the music of the European colonists. These rhythms are varied and complex and so is their history. They've had a widespread and profound influence on the evolution of popular music not only in Latin America, but also in the United States. the most obvious offshoots are the tango in Argentine and Uruguay and most of the other popular dances of South and Central America, as well as ragtime and jazz in the United States. Jelly Roll Morton claimed this Latin tinge is the essential element that distinguishes jazz from ragtime. These rhythms are the musical roots of groups like the Buena Vista Social Club.Includes historic tangos written by Ignacio Cervantes - Cuba, Manuel Saumell - Cuba, Juan Morel Campos - Puerto Rico, Jose Quinton - Puerto Rico, Ernesto Nazareth -Brazil, Tomas Leon - Mexico, Sebastian Yradier - Spain, Eduardo Sanchez du Fuentas - Cuba, Will Tyers - USA, Vincente Greco - Argentina, Anselmo Rosendo (Mendizabal) - Argentina, Angel Villoldo - Argentina, Eduardo Arolas - Argentina, Juan Maglio - Argentina

Book excerpt: In this generously illustrated book, world-renowned Yale art historian Robert Farris Thompson gives us the definitive account of tango, "the fabulous dance of the past hundred years–and the most beautiful, in the opinion of Martha Graham.” Thompson traces tango’s evolution in the nineteenth century under European, Andalusian-Gaucho, and African influences through its representations by Hollywood and dramatizations in dance halls throughout the world. He shows us tango not only as brilliant choreography but also as text, music, art, and philosophy of life. Passionately argued and unparalleled in its research, its synthesis, and its depth of understanding, Tango: The Art History of Love is a monumental achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Tango Machine, ethnomusicologist Morgan Luker examines the new and different ways contemporary tango music has been drawn upon and used as a resource for cultural, social, and economic development in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In doing so, he addresses broader concerns about how the value and meaning of musical culture has been profoundly reframed in the age of expediency where music and the arts are called upon and often compelled to address social, political and economic problems that were previously located outside the cultural domain. Long hailed as Argentina s so-called national genre of popular music and dance, tango has not been musically or socially popular in Argentina since the late 1950s, and today the vast majority of Argentines consider tango to be little more than a kitschy remnant of an increasingly distant past. Nevertheless, tango continues to have salience as a potent symbol of Argentine culture within the national imaginary and global representations. Ultimately, Luker argues that tango in Buenos Aires is not exceptional, but in fact emblematic of musical culture in the age of expediency, where the value and meaning of music and the arts are largely defined by their usability within broader social, political, and economic projects. Luker tackles here some of the core conceptual challenges facing critical music scholarship; the book will be an important resource for readers in ethnomusicology and music, anthropology, cultural studies, and Latin American studies."
