Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise guide to the care of small mammals, Ferrets, Rabbits, and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery covers the conditions seen most often in veterinary practice. The book emphasizes preventive medicine along with topics including disease management, ophthalmology, dentistry, and zoonosis. More than 400 illustrations demonstrate key concepts related to radiographic interpretation, relevant anatomy, and diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic techniques. Now in full color, this edition adds coverage of more surgical procedures and expands coverage of zoonotic disease. From editors Katherine Quesenberry and James W. Carpenter, along with a team of expert contributors, the "Pink Book" provides an authoritative, single source of information that is hard to find elsewhere. A logical organization makes it quick and easy to find important information, with each section devoted to a single animal and chapters within each section organized by body system. Over 400 photographs and illustrations highlight key concepts such as radiographic interpretation and the main points of diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic techniques. A chapter on ophthalmology provides hard-to-find information on eye care for ferrets, rabbits, rodents, and other small mammals. Coverage of preventive medicine includes basic biology, husbandry, and routine care of the healthy animal. The drug formulary supplies dosage instructions for ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, rats/mice, prairie dogs, hedgehogs, and sugar gliders. Chapter outlines offer at-a-glance overviews of the contents of each chapter. Handy tables and charts make it easy to find key information. Expanded Zoonotic Diseases chapter adds more depth along with the latest information on the rising potential for disease transmission to humans as exotic pets become more popular. Additional surgical procedures for each species are included, some with step-by-step instructions accompanied by color photographs and line drawings. Full-color images show the sometimes minute structures of these small animals and make accurate diagnoses easier, especially for lymphoproliferative diseases of rabbits, endoscopy, cytology, and hematology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Castle's paper treats of an ancestral or atavistic coat-character of the guinea-pig present in most wild rodents but frequently absent in their tame varieties and which may be obtained by crossing certain domesticated varieties of guinea-pig. A full account is given of how the reversion in question may be secured, how its reappearance can be accounted for, and in what way the recovered character may be "fixed" or reestablished as a racial character together with the complete data which form the basis of this account. Dr. Little analyzes the observed phenomena of color inheritance in mice on the basis of Mendelian heredity and shows the relations of the various factors involved in the production of colors, to each other and to the coat and eye colors produced. The paper includes the analysis and description of the color factors and gives the experimental data on which the conclusions are based. -Classified First of Publications of the Carnegie Institution of Washington [1918]

Book excerpt: If you're looking to adopt a guinea pig, there are some fascinating facts about them. While they have the potential to be a wonderful pet, there are also some important facts you should know before you get one. First, they need a lot of space. They are naturally shy and need plenty of hiding places, but don't worry, guinea pigs aren't aggressive! The guinea pig originated in the Andes region of South America and may have been brought to Europe by Spanish explorers in the 1500s. In fact, the scientific name of this rodent is Cavia porcellus, although some people still refer to them as "guinea pigs" - a mistranslation of the genus name. While it is a relatively modern breed, there are still many myths about guinea pigs. Although these pigs aren't as social as other breeds of rodents, they can recognize the voices of their human companions. They also recognize footsteps and the voices of humans and are capable of distinguishing them from each other. Because of their linguistic abilities, veterinarians who specialize in this type of animal practice are often called exotic veterinarians. Guinea pigs are sensitive to your voice and actions and can even tell when they need to pee. Unlike many other pets, guinea pigs require constant access to grass and good quality hay. This is important for their teeth and digestive system. Unlike cats and rabbits, guinea pigs don't catch human viruses, but they can contract fungal infections and bacterial infections. They can also pee on humans. In addition, they should be allowed to have a few treats from fruits and vegetables. However, their high sugar content can lead to problems in the long run.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 15 years since the last Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources report on the general management of rodents was published, important advances in biomedical research and increased public awareness have created a new environment for animal research. Modern technology-such as insertion of functional genes from other species into mice or rats, elimination of a single selected gene or function in mice, and the re-creation of elements of the human immune system in mice-has greatly expanded the usefulness of rodents in drug development and as models of human diseases. The technologic requirements of such advanced systems have led to improved understanding and implementation of environmental requirements for the care and use of rodents in research. The intent of this report is to provide current information to laboratory animal scientists (including both animal-care technicians and veterinarians), investigators, research technicians, and administrators on general elements of rodent care and use that should be considered both for optimal design and conduct of research and to meet current standards of care and use.
