Book Synopsis Architectural Terracottas from the Regia by : Susan B. Downey
Download or read book Architectural Terracottas from the Regia written by Susan B. Downey and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Regia was the house of the Pontifex Maximus, Rome's High Priest, who lived in the Forum. The men who held this office played an important role in the life of the Roman state for centuries: the earliest Regia dates to the seventh century B.C.E., and it was rebuilt frequently. Susan B. Downey has extensively studied the sixth-century phase of the building, and in this valuable work she lays out the scheme for the architectural terracottas. These fragments allow the reconstruction of almost the entire decorative system for the building. Art historians and archaeologists will welcome this book. It also contains much of interest for Roman social historians and for students and scholars of early Italy and its communities.

Book Synopsis Style and Function in Roman Decoration by : Ellen Swift
Download or read book Style and Function in Roman Decoration written by Ellen Swift and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book puts forward a new interpretation of Roman decorative art, focusing on the function of decoration in the social context. It examines the three principal areas of social display and conspicuous consumption in the Roman world: social space, entertainment, and dress, and discusses the significance of the decoration of objects and interiors within these contexts, drawing examples from both Rome and its environs, and the Western provinces, from the early Imperial period to Late Antiquity. Focusing on specific examples, including mosaics and other interior décor, silver plate, glass and pottery vessels, and jewellery and other dress accessories, Swift demonstrates the importance of decoration in creating and maintaining social networks and identities and fostering appropriate social behaviour, and its role in perpetuating social convention and social norms. It is argued that our understanding of stylistic change and the relationship between this and the wider social context in the art of the Roman period is greatly enhanced by an initial focus on the particular social relationships fostered by decorated objects and spaces. The book demonstrates that an examination of so-called 'minor art' is fundamental in any understanding of the relationship between art and its social context, and aims to reinvigorate debate on the value of decoration and ornament in the Roman period and beyond.

Download or read book Problems of Style written by Alois Riegl and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written at the height of the arts and crafts movement in fin-de-siecle Vienna, Alois Riegl's Stilfragen represented a turning point in defining art and understanding the sources of its inspiration. Demonstrating an uninterrupted continunity in the history of ornament from the ancient Egyptian through the Islamic period, Riegl argued that the creative urge manifests itself in both "great art" and the most humble artifact, and that change is an inherent part of style. This new translation, which renders Riegl's seminal work in contemporary, readable prose, allows for a fresh reexamination of his thought in light of current revisionist debate. His discovery of infinite variation in the restatement of several decorative motifs--the palmette, rosette, tendril--led Riegl to believe that art is completely independent from exterior conditions and is beyond individual volition. This thinking laid the groundwork for his famous concept of Kunstwollen, or artistic intention. "Something that the translation will, I hope, convey, is the passion invsted in Riegl's enterprise. We are made to feel that the issues he discussed mattered vitally to him; it was the very nature of art and its relation to human life that were at stake, art as an absolute necessity." --From the preface of Henri Zerner Alois Reigl (1858-1905) was Curator of Textiles at the Museum of Art and Industry in Vienna during most of his career and wrote many influential works on the history of art, including Spatromische Kunstgeschichte. Evelyn Kain is Associate Professor of Art History at Ripon College, Ripon, Wisconsin. David Castriota is Assistant Professor of Art History at Sarah Lawrence College. Originally published in 1993.
