Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetland Systems to Control Urban Runoff integrates natural and constructed wetlands, and sustainable drainage techniques into traditional water and wastewater systems used to treat surface runoff and associated diffuse pollution. The first part of the text introduces the fundamentals of water quality management, and water and wastewater treatment. The remaining focus of the text is on reviewing treatment technologies, disinfection issues, sludge treatment and disposal options, and current case studies related to constructed wetlands applied for runoff and diffuse pollution treatment. Professionals and students will be interested in the detailed design, operation, management, process control and water quality monitoring and applied modeling issues. * Contains a comprehensive collection of timely, novel and innovative research case studies in the area of wetland systems applied for the treatment of urban runoff * Demonstrates to practitioners how natural and constructed wetland systems can be integrated into traditional wastewater systems, which are predominantly applied for the treatment of surface runoff and diffuse pollution * Assesses the design, operation, management and water treatment performance of sustainable urban drainage systems including constructed wetlands

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetland mitigation and stormwater management provisions in the 1987 Clean Water Act (CWA) significantly impact transportation agencies. CWA Section 404 stipulates that when highway construction results in the displacement of natural wetlands, the highway agency is required to create artificial wetlands to compensate for that loss. Section 402 directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate stormwater runoff from certain areas under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Highway stormwater runoff, runoff from road construction sites with five or more disturbed acres, and runoff from maintenance and storage facilities are subject to NPDES permit requirements. In addition to the EPA regulations, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) must also comply with the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act, Virginia's Stormwater Management Regulations, and State Erosion and Sediment Control Regulations. A common requirement of all of these stormwater regulations is the use of best management practices (BMP), such as detention ponds and infiltration for the control of runoff quantity and quality. To date, VDOT has constructed over 220 wetlands and more than 350 stormwater detention basins. Wetland mitigation is a significant item in the VDOT road-building budget. Compliance with applicable stormwater regulations can add between ten and fifteen percent to the cost of an average construction project. A potentially cost-effective approach to satisfying wetland mitigation requirements and stormwater regulations is the use of mitigated wetlands as stormwater BMPs. It is believed that if a mitigated wetland site is properly engineered and maintained, it will perform adequately as a stormwater BMP without jeopardizing its desired wetland functions. It may also be possible to design a detention basin to include emergent wetland vegetation to enhance pollutant removal.

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to highway design engineers, maintenance engineers, environmental personnel, administrators, and others responsible for the design, operation, and maintenance of stormwater management for highways and ancillary facilities. Information is presented on the basic hydrology needed to assess stormwater impacts and on the effectiveness of stormwater management techniques. Designers of highway facilities must consider stormwater management requirements within the context of both localized runoff impacts, as well as downstream effects of runoff. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the management of both stormwater quantity and stormwater quality. Stormwater quantity includes an overview of methods of estimating runoff and management control practices. Stormwater quality management includes discussions of the most prevalent pollutants and best management practices (BMP) to minimize pollutants from transportation facilities. Various types of structural and non-structural methods are described, including their design considerations and efficiencies. Several stormwater management models are described, with special concern for highway applications. Highlights from the 1990 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both practical and theoretical, this book provides the basic principles of soil chemistry, hydrology, wetland ecology, microbiology, vegetation and wildlife as a sound introduction to this innovative technology to treat toxic wastewaters and sludges. The use of wetlands for acid mine drainage, and metals removal in municipal, urban runoff, and industrial systems is discussed. Case histories are also presented, demonstrating specific types of constructed wetlands and applications to municipal wastewater, home sites, coal and non-coal mining, coal-fired electric power plants, chemical and pulp industry, agriculture, landfill leachate, and urban stormwater. Construction and management guidelines are clearly explained, providing information on applicable policies and regulations, siting and construction, and operations and monitoring of constructed wetlands treatment systems. Recent theoretical and empirical results from operating systems and research facilities, including such new applications as nutrient removal from eutrophic lakes and urban stormwater treatment within highway rights-of-way, are included. This book is an ideal resource for wastewater treatment plants, consulting engineers, federal and state regulators, industrial environmental managers, municipalities, environmental health professionals, and ecologists.
