Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental disorders in children and adolescents have gained prominence in recent years, and clinicians in the field are increasingly on the lookout for new methods in diagnosis and treatment. In the last 25 years, the Stanford Division of Child Psychiatry has become one of the premier clinical, research, and educational facilities in child and adolescent psychiatry, both nationally and internationally. Its faculty has distinguished itself in several key domains of psychopathology in both basic and clinical research. This handbook provides a detailed description of unique diagnostic and treatment approaches to mental disorders in the Stanford Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Most of the principal authors of this volume are members of or previously affiliated with the Stanford faculty. Readers will thus be privy to Stanford's highly distinct approach, characterized by principles of developmental approaches to psychopathology and an emphasis on integrated treatment packages. Moreover, clinicians will appreciate how the faculty's novel approach to diagnosis and treatment is strongly influenced by pediatric and developmental thinking. Empirical support and practice based rationale for the current diagnostic and treatment algorithms and methodologies in Stanford clinics will be presented in a highly lucid manner. Written with frontline mental health clinicians in mind, this handbook will prove an invaluable asset to those who wish to implement Stanford's approach to mental disorders in children and adolescents, or simply broaden their horizons on the cutting-edge methods in the field.

Download or read book Program Guidelines for Individuals who are Severely Orthopedically Impaired written by California. State Department of Education and published by Hippocrene Books. This book was released on 1992 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These guidelines are intended to provide a resource to use in assessing, planning, providing, evaluating, and improving the quality of programs for California pupils with severe orthopedic impairments. The first three chapters present characteristic elements of a well-designed program in the areas of: (1) identification and assessment, (2) the Individualized Education Program, and (3) unique program needs. Chapter 4 emphasizes that decisions for placing pupils with severe orthopedic impairments in an educational program should be based on the educational needs of pupils rather than on their handicapping condition. The supporting role of the special education teacher is stressed. Chapter 5 specifies staff competencies of the site administrator, special education staff, related services staff, and support service staff. Chapter 6 examines other special considerations such as monitoring medications, implementing emergency procedures, coordinating services among agencies, and making facilities accessible. Seven appendixes include program evaluation guidelines, forms related to least restrictive environment requirements, examples for modifying regular education programs, selected legal requirements, procedures and guidelines for health care, resources for technical assistance, and a directive to special educators concerning intelligence testingn of black pupils. A glossary completes the guide. (DB)

Book Synopsis Handbook of Classroom Management by : Carolyn M. Evertson
Download or read book Handbook of Classroom Management written by Carolyn M. Evertson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 1357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classroom management is a topic of enduring concern for teachers, administrators, and the public. It consistently ranks as the first or second most serious educational problem in the eyes of the general public, and beginning teachers consistently rank it as their most pressing concern during their early teaching years. Management problems continue to be a major cause of teacher burnout and job dissatisfaction. Strangely, despite this enduring concern on the part of educators and the public, few researchers have chosen to focus on classroom management or to identify themselves with this critical field. The Handbook of Classroom Management has four primary goals: 1) to clarify the term classroom management; 2) to demonstrate to scholars and practitioners that there is a distinct body of knowledge that directly addresses teachers’ managerial tasks; 3) to bring together disparate lines of research and encourage conversations across different areas of inquiry; and 4) to promote a vigorous agenda for future research in this area. To this end, 47 chapters have been organized into 10 sections, each chapter written by a recognized expert in that area. Cutting across the sections and chapters are the following themes: *First, positive teacher-student relationships are seen as the very core of effective classroom management. *Second, classroom management is viewed as a social and moral curriculum. *Third, external reward and punishment strategies are not seen as optimal for promoting academic and social-emotional growth and self-regulated behavior. *Fourth, to create orderly, productive environments teachers must take into account student characteristics such as age, developmental level, race, ethnicity, cultural background, socioeconomic status, and ableness. Like other research handbooks, the Handbook of Classroom Management provides an indispensable reference volume for scholars, teacher educators, in-service practitioners, and the academic libraries serving these audiences. It is also appropriate for graduate courses wholly or partly devoted to the study of classroom management.
