Book Synopsis Risk Management Series: Designing for Earthquakes - A Manual for Architects by : Federal Emergency Agency
Download or read book Risk Management Series: Designing for Earthquakes - A Manual for Architects written by Federal Emergency Agency and published by FEMA. This book was released on 2013-04-14 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquakes in the United States are regional in their occurrence and while California is famous for its earthquake other states, such as Texas, have much less concern for the threat of temblors. However, architectural practice is becoming increasingly national and global, and the architect in Texas may find that the next project is in California. Thus it has become necessary for the professional architect to have some knowledge of the earthquake problem and how design seeks to control it. Designing for Earthquakes: a Manual for Architects is intended to explain the principles of seismic design for those without a technical background in engineering and seismology. The primary intended audience is that of architects, and includes practicing architects, architectural students and faculty in architectural schools who teach structures and seismic design. For this reason the text and graphics are focused on those aspects of seismic design that are important for the architect to know. Because of its non-technical approach this publication will also be useful to anyone who has an interest and concern for the seismic protection of buildings, including facility managers, building owners and tenants, building committee participants, emergency service personnel and building officials. Engineers and engineering students will also gain from this discussion of seismic design from an architectural viewpoint. The principles discussed are applicable to a wide range of building types, both new and existing. The focus is on buildings that are designed by a team that includes architects, engineers and other consultants.

Book Synopsis Between Two Earthquakes by : Sir Bernard M. Feilden
Download or read book Between Two Earthquakes written by Sir Bernard M. Feilden and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1987-10-01 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook addresses three areas of concern for the museum administrator concerning the protection of historic buildings, monuments, and archaeological sites located in seismic areas. It proposes pre-disaster measures such as taking accurate and complete documentation (photogrammetry is discussed in one of the 13 appendixes), risk awareness, planning, maintenance and inspections, etc. Second, when an earthquake strikes, the immediate emergency steps necessary to protect life and property are indicated; and after the earthquake, the strengthening of valuable cultural property (based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, also in an appendix) should be included in the general program of prevention maintenance along with the repairs discussed in detail applicable to each architectural element, and to the site as a whole.
Book Synopsis Historic Cities in the Face of Disasters by : Fatemeh Farnaz Arefian
Download or read book Historic Cities in the Face of Disasters written by Fatemeh Farnaz Arefian and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-13 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines reconstruction and resilience of historic cities and societies from multiple disciplinary and complementary perspectives and, by doing so, it helps researchers and practitioners alike, among them reconstruction managers, urban governance and professionals. The book builds on carefully selected and updated papers accepted for the 2019 Silk Cities international conference on ‘reconstruction, recovery and resilience of historic cities and societies’, the third Silk Cities conference held in L’Aquila, Italy, 10-12 July 2019, working with University of L’Aquila and UCL. This multi-scale, and multidisciplinary book offers cross-sectoral and complimentary voices from multiple stakeholders, including academia, urban governance, NGOs and local populations. It examines post-disaster reconstruction strategies and case studies from Europe, Asia and Latin America that provide a valuable collection for anyone who would like to get a global overview on the subject matter. It thereby enables a deeper understanding of challenges, opportunities and approaches in dealing with historic cities facing disasters at various geographical scales. Additionally, it brings together historical approaches to the reconstruction of historical cities and those of more recent times. Thus, it can be used as a reference book for global understanding of the subject matter.

Book Synopsis Planning and Engineering Guidelines for the Seismic Retrofitting of Historic Adobe Structures by : E. Leroy Tolles
Download or read book Planning and Engineering Guidelines for the Seismic Retrofitting of Historic Adobe Structures written by E. Leroy Tolles and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2003-03-20 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adobe, or mud brick, has been widely used as a building material in the American Southwest, including California. The vulnerability of many original adobe structures to damage or destruction from earthquakes has been of great concern. The guidelines presented here address the practical aspects of this problem and represent the culmination of 12 years of research and testing on the seismic retrofitting of adobe buildings. These guidelines can assist in the planning of seismic retrofitting projects consistent with both conservation principles and established public policy.

Download or read book Seismic Stabilization of Historic Adobe Structures written by Getty Conservation Institute and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2000-11-30 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes tests performed on model adobe buildings to evaluate seismic damage mitigation techniques applicable to the retrofitting of historic and culturally significant adobe structures. Part of the Getty Seismic Adobe Project (GSAP), the three-year program outlined in this volume was designed to develop and test minimally invasive, inexpensive, and easily implemented methods of protecting such structures from severe earthquake damage. Small- and large-scale models were tested on computer-controlled shaking tables at Stanford University and at the IIZIS Earthquake Engineering Laboratory in the Republic of Macedonia, respectively. The authors identify typical failure modes of adobe structures and describe specific retrofit techniques to help minimize such failures. Extensive photographic documentation is included.
