Download or read book Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management written by Robert John Raison and published by CABI. This book was released on 2001 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increasing pressure on the forestry industry to adopt sustainable practices, but a lack of knowledge about how to facilitate this, and how to measure sustainability. This book reviews current thinking about scientifically based indicators, and sustainable management of natural forests and plantations. Information is applicable to boreal, temperate and tropical biomes. The contents have been developed from papers presented at a IUFRO conference held in Australia, in order to develop a state-of the art report on this subject.

Technical Advisory Committee and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of scale of data must be addressed if forest managers are to minimize errors when data collected at one organizational level are used to estimate parameters at another. This paper discusses the following issues concerning scale: the issues of scale regarding the collection & aggregation of data at the subnational & national levels; the effect of scale on the interpretation of data; and the implications of the periodicity of nationally collected data on subnational application of criteria & indicators of sustainable forest management. The paper also provides examples from several countries on mechanisms for the development, identification, and implementation of subnational indicators of sustainable forest management that can be linked to national indicators.
Book Synopsis Forest Certification: A Policy Perspective by : Chris Elliott
Download or read book Forest Certification: A Policy Perspective written by Chris Elliott and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyses the development of certification programmes in three countries (Indonesia, Canada and Sweden) using the Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF) as a theoretical reference point. The ACF is an actor-based framework for analysing policy processes and has not previously been applied in a developing country. Actors in the three countries took different approaches to certification. In Canada, in a programme development process supported by the forest products industry, a management systems approach was taken. In Sweden, performance standards were developed in a process initially driven by NGOs. In Indonesia, certification was led by an NGO within a framework established by government, and a performance standards approach was used. The paper concludes that forest certification can be best understood as a policy instrument that promotes and facilitates policy-orientated learning among actors, and provides indirect incentives for improved forest management. Learning occurs both as the standards to be used for certification are developed, and as they are implemented. The benefits of learning and consensus building among actors (such as NGOs, forest companies, private forest owners, indigenous peoples, governments, etc.) who have traditionally been in conflict with each other can be significant. On the other hand, where fundamental changes in forest policy (such as tenure and forest revenue reform) are needed, certification should not be seen as a substitute for these A further conclusion is that, while public policies change over periods of decades, the private policies of retailers and forest product companies can adapt more rapidly to changing circumstances. The concept of a ‘fast track’ of private policy change, compared to the slower track of governmental policy change, is therefore proposed and described. A number of interesting theoretical and empirical avenues for further research on certification are discussed.
Book Synopsis The Sustainable Forestry Handbook by : Neil Judd
Download or read book The Sustainable Forestry Handbook written by Neil Judd and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sustainable Forestry Handbook is widely considered to be the essential aid to understanding and implementing sustainable forest management. Providing a clear and concise guide to the practicalities of implementing international standards for sustainable forest management, this fully updated second edition covers new Forest Stewardship Council requirements, High Conservation Value Forests, clearer requirements on pesticides and developments in policy and forest governance. Aimed at forest managers, and employing extensive cross referencing and easy-to-understand illustrations, this highly practical handbook explains in clear terms what the standards require forest managers to do and how they might go about implementing them.
Book Synopsis Ecological Bulletins, Targets and Tools for the Maintenance of Forest Biodiversity by : Per Angelstam
Download or read book Ecological Bulletins, Targets and Tools for the Maintenance of Forest Biodiversity written by Per Angelstam and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-05-06 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maintaining forest biodiversity by combining protection, management and restoration of forest and woodland landscapes is a central component of sustainable development. Evidence that there are threshold levels for how much habitat loss may be tolerated for viable populations of specialised species to be maintained. Policy-makers, businesses and managers pose questions about how to balance use of renewable forest resources and conserve biodiversity. Examples are presented on how biodiversity assessments can be made. Proposes how the critical gaps in our knowledge identified throughout the book could be filled through macroecological research and international co-operation.
Book Synopsis Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management by : Eugenio Martinez-Falero
Download or read book Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management written by Eugenio Martinez-Falero and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest management has evolved from a mercantilist view to a multi-functional one that integrates economic, social, and ecological aspects. However, the issue of sustainability is not yet resolved. Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management brings together global research in three areas of application: inventory of the forest variables that determine the main environmental indices, description and design of new environmental indices, and the application of sustainability indices for regional implementations. All these quantitative techniques create the basis for the development of scientific methodologies of participatory sustainable forest management.
Book Synopsis Spatial Modelling in Forest Ecology and Management by : Martin Jansen
Download or read book Spatial Modelling in Forest Ecology and Management written by Martin Jansen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the 1970s, when signs of destabilization of forests became visible in Eu rope on a large scale, it soon became obvious that the syndrome called "forest de cline" was caused by a network of interrelated factors of abiotic and biotic origin. All attempts to explain the wide-spread syndrome by a single cause, and there were many of them, failed or can only be regarded as a single mosaic stone in the network of caus es behind the phenomenon. Forest ecosystems are highly complex natural or quasi natural systems, which exhibit different structures and functions and as a conse quence different resilience to internal or external stresses. Moreover, forest ecosys tems have a long history, which means that former impacts may act as predisposing factors for other stresses. The complexity and the different history of forest ecosys tems are two reasons that make it difficult to assess the actual state and future devel opment of forests. But there are two other reasons: one is the large time scale in which forests react, the other is the idiosyncrasy of the reactions on different sites. Due to the slow reaction and the regional complexity of the abiotic environment of forest ecosys tems, a profound analysis of each site and region is necessary to identify the underly ing causes and driving forces when attempting to overcome the destruction of forest ecosystems.
