Book Synopsis Guidelines for Developing Design Earthquake Response Spectra by :
Download or read book Guidelines for Developing Design Earthquake Response Spectra written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State-of-the-art information required for developing design earthquake response spectra is compiled and synthesized in a manual-like format to provide the user with general guidelines for estimating the ground motion load expected for sites of interest located throughout the United States. The information contained in this document constitutes a subset of the comprehensive body of knowledge available in the field. This subset is considered pertinent for a technical understanding of the theoretical and empirical bases currently used to develop design earthquake response spectra for use in construction, design, and evaluation of important facilities. These guidelines relate to the following analyses: (1) determination of seismicity parameters, (2) estimation of seismic attenuation functions, (3) estimation of maximum intensity of shaking, (4) estimation of ground motion response spectra, and (5) estimation of local soil amplification effects. Basic information needed to perform each analysis and to make judgements is provided. Examples are extracted from published reports to demonstrate representative U.S. seismic design problems and the use of the guidelines. Extensive references are provided to enable the user to obtain additional information on specific topics of interest.
Book Synopsis Performance Based Seismic Design for Tall Buildings by : Ramin Golesorkhi
Download or read book Performance Based Seismic Design for Tall Buildings written by Ramin Golesorkhi and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance-Based Seismic Design (PBSD) is a structural design methodology that has become more common in urban centers around the world, particularly for the design of high-rise buildings. The primary benefit of PBSD is that it substantiates exceptions to prescribed code requirements, such as height limits applied to specific structural systems, and allows project teams to demonstrate higher performance levels for structures during a seismic event. However, the methodology also involves significantly more effort in the analysis and design stages, with verification of building performance required at multiple seismic demand levels using Nonlinear Response History Analysis (NRHA). The design process also requires substantial knowledge of overall building performance and analytical modeling, in order to proportion and detail structural systems to meet specific performance objectives. This CTBUH Technical Guide provides structural engineers, developers, and contractors with a general understanding of the PBSD process by presenting case studies that demonstrate the issues commonly encountered when using the methodology, along with their corresponding solutions. The guide also provides references to the latest industry guidelines, as applied in the western United States, with the goal of disseminating these methods to an international audience for the advancement and expansion of PBSD principles worldwide.
Book Synopsis AASHTO Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design by :
Download or read book AASHTO Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design written by and published by AASHTO. This book was released on 2009 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covers seismic design for typical bridge types and applies to non-critical and non-essential bridges. Approved as an alternate to the seismic provisions in the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. Differs from the current procedures in the LRFD Specifications in the use of displacement-based design procedures, instead of the traditional force-based "R-Factor" method. Includes detailed guidance and commentary on earthquake resisting elements and systems, global design strategies, demand modeling, capacity calculation, and liquefaction effects. Capacity design procedures underpin the Guide Specifications' methodology; includes prescriptive detailing for plastic hinging regions and design requirements for capacity protection of those elements that should not experience damage.

Book Synopsis Seismic Hazards Estimation Study for Vandenberg AFB by : James C. Battis
Download or read book Seismic Hazards Estimation Study for Vandenberg AFB written by James C. Battis and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seismic hazard at Vandenberg AFB was investigated using both statistical analysis of the temporal and spatial distribution of historic earthquake activity within 500 km of Point Arguello, California, and deterministic methods based on knowledge of earthquake faults and recency of faulting near the installation. The results of these studies included probabilistic estimates of peak ground motions and maximum credible ground motions at Vandenberg AFB. This information was used to generate horizontal design response spectra which are more directly applicable for the analysis of the behavior of engineering structures to earthquake induced motions.

Book Synopsis International Handbook of Earthquake Engineering by : Mario Paz
Download or read book International Handbook of Earthquake Engineering written by Mario Paz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of earthquake engineering has been the focus of my teaching and research for many years. Thus, when Mario Paz, the editor of this handbook, asked me to write a Foreword, I was interested and honored by his request. Worldwide, people are beginning to understand the severity of the danger to present and future generations caused by the destruction of the environment. Earthquakes pose a similar threat; thus, the proper use of methods for earthquake-resistant design and construction is vitally important for countries that are at high risk of being subjected to strong-motion earthquakes. Most seismic activity is the result of tectonic earthquakes. Tectonic earthquakes are very special events in that, although they occur frequently, their probability of becoming natural hazards for a specific urban area is very small. When a severe earthquake does occur near an urban area, however, its consequences are very large in terms of structural destruction and human suffering.
