Book Synopsis Sustainable Groundwater Development for Improved Livelihoods in Sub-Saharan Africa by : Paul Pavelic
Download or read book Sustainable Groundwater Development for Improved Livelihoods in Sub-Saharan Africa written by Paul Pavelic and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the benefits and challenges of intensifying groundwater irrigation in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) for improving smallholder agrarian livelihoods. Only about 3% of the groundwater resources of Sub-Saharan Africa are used for irrigated agriculture despite the subcontinent’s relative abundance of groundwater. The majority of the region’s smallholders are highly dependent on seasonal dryland cropping, making them extremely vulnerable to uncertain weather patterns and droughts. Improved irrigation capabilities through sustainable groundwater development could unleash smallholder farming and make it a major driver of economic growth, poverty reduction, climate resilience, and improved food security. So, why is groundwater so underused? Tapping into groundwater requires a major shift in farming practices and it has its own challenges and requirements – smallholder access to land and finance for irrigation infrastructure and equipment, gendered and equitable adoption options. This whole list is framed in terms of what the smallholder farmers need. Hence, this should also be put in this context, supply chains, energy access, resource availability, and institutional support. The chapters in this book present a picture that is not only heterogeneous across the region, but also hold some common denominators. They serve to enrich the discourse and help better understand the barriers along the pathways toward the sustainable and transformative adoption of groundwater irrigation. The scientific information provided herein would be of interest to researchers, practitioners, decision makers and planners with interest in the region. This book was originally published as a Special Issue of Water International journal.

Book Synopsis Appraisal of Water Resources for Effective and Sustainable Management by : Collins Korbla Tay
Download or read book Appraisal of Water Resources for Effective and Sustainable Management written by Collins Korbla Tay and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater scarcity is caused by a long history of poor management of water resources. Typically, humans simultaneously use the same limited water resource for multiple purposes without considering the cumulative impact on this resource. This book elucidates the chemical health status of the Volta Lake ecosystem within the framework of changes in chemical parameters as potential indicators of pollution to ensure the appropriate management of the lake to satisfy the changing demand placed on the lake, safeguard the quality of life of its users, protect its ecosystem and preserve it for future generations. This book adopts an integrated approach to address the general chemical health status of the lake for ecosystem sustainability as well as its trophic state and primary productivity to significantly inform future research needs and approaches for effective and sustainable management.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue of Water, Air and Soil Pollution offers original contributions from BIOGEOMON, an international symposium on ecosystem behavior and the evaluation of integrated monitoring of small catchments, held in Prague, Czech Republic, in September 1993. The meeting attracted nearly 200 scientists from 27 countries on five continents. BIOGEOMON was a loose continuation of another international meeting, GEOMON, which was held in Prague in 1987. Both sym posia provided a forum for the discussion of ideas on environmental problems in western and eastern Europe, with important contributions from the American continent. With the dramatic collapse of the iron curtain, it was our hope that more so than GEOMON, BIOGEOMON would provide opportunities for the free exchange of ideas, fostering the development of research collaborations between its participants. With international openness comes the increasing realization that every indus trialized nation has its own legacy of environmental degradation. Anthropogenic impacts differ in severity and scale; air and water transport of pollutants transform local impacts into regional and global ones, ignoring political boundaries and eco nomic differences. Environmental consequences of anthropogenic activities often are detectable at the ecosystem level. Thus, the challenge of ecosystem science, and to the individuals who practice it, is to develop a comprehensive understanding of ecosystem function in the past and at present, and to apply such understanding toward minimizing future insults to the local, regional, and global environment.
