In spite of their many advantages composite materials are highly susceptible to hidden flaws that may occur at any time during the life of a structure and if undetected, may cause sudden and catastrophic failure of the entire structure. An example of such a structural component is the "honeycomb composite" in which thin composite skins are bonded with adhesives to the two faces of extremely lightweight and relatively thick metallic honeycombs. These components are often used in aircraft and aerospace structures due to their high strength to weight ratio. Unfortunately, the bond between the honeycomb and the skin may degrade with age and service loads can lead to separation of the load-bearing skin from the honeycomb (called "disbonds") and compromise the safety of the structure. The need for model-based studies is widely recognized in the NDE community and a great deal of work has indeed been carried out for simple, metallic structures. However the literature on composite structures is rather limited due to the enormous mathematical complexity involved in dealing with them. In this dissertation a comprehensive approach including numerical (finite element method) and analytical method is used for calculating the ultrasonic wavefield in composite structural components with and without defects. Laboratory experiments are carried out on a composite honeycomb specimen containing damage to the skin or a localized disbond at the skin-core interfaces. The skin and the honeycomb composite are considered separately in order to understand the interaction of ultrasonic waves with damage in the two structures. The waves are launched into the specimen using a broadband PZT transducer and are detected by a distributed array of identical transducers located on the surface of the specimen. The guided wave components of the signals are shown to be strongly influenced by the presence of a defect in the skin or the honeycomb composite structure. The experimentally observed results are used to develop an autonomous scheme to locate the disbonds. The calculated results from the simulations are compared with existing and new experiments to validate and improve the models. The results should be very useful in model-based understanding of ultrasonic data collected during nondestructive inspection and evaluation (NDI/NDE) of advanced aircraft and aerospace structure and in the development of reliable health monitoring systems in the structures.

Book excerpt: Composite materials, especially carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP), have been widely used in the aircraft industry because of their high specific strength and stiffness, resistance to corrosion and good fatigue life. Due to their highly anisotropic material properties and laminated structures, joining methods like bolting and riveting are no longer appropriate for joining CFRP since they initiate defects during the assembly and severely compromise the integrity of the structure; thus new techniques for joining CFRP are highly demanded. Adhesive bonding is a promising method because it relieves stress concentration, reduces weight and provides smooth surfaces. Additionally, it is a low-cost alternative to the co-cured method which is currently used to manufacture components of aircraft fuselage. Adhesive defects, disbonds at the interface between adherend and adhesive layer, are focused on in this thesis because they can be initialized by either poor surface preparation during the manufacturing or fatigue loads during service. Aircraft need structural health monitoring (SHM) systems to increase safety and reduce loss, and adhesive bonds usually represent the hotspots of the assembled structure. There are many nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods for bond inspection. However, these methods cannot be readily integrated into an SHM system because of the bulk size and weight of the equipment and requirement of accessibility to one side of the bonded joint. The first objective of this work is to develop instruments, actuators, sensors and a data acquisition system for SHM of bond lines using ultrasonic guided waves which are well known to be able to cover large volume of the structure and inaccessible regions. Different from widely used guided wave sensors like PZT disks, the new actuators, piezoelectric fiber composite (PFC) phased array transducers0 (PAT), can control the modal content of the excited waves and the new sensors, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) arrays, which can extract modal information from the received waves. Also, the PATs and array sensors have broad frequency bandwidth and can easily excite and receive high order guided wave modes which are not possible using PZT disks. Currently, many guided wave SHM techniques employ the fundamental guided wave modes below the first cut-off frequency because of their low dispersion in this frequency range. Such a practice ignores the possibility of using higher order modes which sometimes have much better sensitivity to defects. A frequency domain finite element model is created in this work to study the behavior of the interaction between guided waves and a disbond. The sensitivities of modes are classified into three levels, namely, good sensitivity, intermediate sensitivity and no sensitivity. The novel damage indicators, wave modal amplitude and wave modal composition, are proposed to increase the sensitivity to disbonds. The effects of environmental operational conditions (EOC) are presenting great challenges to reliable SHM practice because they may influence the wave amplitude and time of flight. The use of fundamental modes shows poor sensitivity to the disbond; but the use of higher order modes shows good sensitivity. The experiments demonstrate that the new damage indicators have excellent sensitivity to disbonds even with elevated temperatures and have the capability to characterize the size of a disbond. Additionally, the detection of other types of defects like notches on aluminum plates and disbonds in adhesively bonded aluminum plate are also demonstrated using the proposed damage indicators. The use of the new damage indicators for SHM applications relies on the capability of resolving the modal content of wave signals which is enabled only by using PFC PATs and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) array sensors.

Book excerpt: Different physical models for the Snoek-type relaxation in ternary systems (Fe-C-Me) are analyzed from the viewpoint of a distance of interatomic interaction taken into account: For non-saturated from the viewpoint of overlapping of interatomic interaction in b.c.c. alloys the physically sufficient and optimal for the computer simulation is the short-range model, which takes into account the interatomic interaction and the average amount of substitutional atoms in the first coordination shell, only. For high alloyed b.c.c. systems (i.e. with the overlapped interatomic interaction) the carbon atom undergoes an interaction of a few substitutional atoms simultaneously. That leads to the appearance of one broadened Snoek peak. Activation energy of such a peak is summed from the "elastic" and "chemical" interatomic interactions. Experimental results for alloys with b.c.c. solid solution structure and its computer simulations allow to introduce the new criterion for the high alloy state of monophase steels: the high alloyed state corresponds to the situation when substitutional atoms can not be considered any longer as the isolated atoms. From the viewpoint of mechanical spectroscopy this situation corresponds to the appearance of one broadened IF Snoek-type peak instead of two peaks existed for the steels with lower substitutional atom concentration.
