Download or read book Stromatolites written by Kenneth McNamara and published by Western Australian Museum. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Attenborough began his extraordinary tv series, The Living Planet at Shark Bay in Australia’s northwest, because crossing the low dunes and descending to the beach is like slipping billions of years back in time. Where the waves gently break on the shore are stromatolites, rising like rows of concrete cauliflowers from the ocean. While they may look like inanimate rocks, examining a piece from the surface under a powerful microscope shows that it is teeming with life. Stromatolites are complex domes or columns of sediment formed by microbiological communities. These ‘living rocks’, as they are sometimes called, teem with the very oldest life forms on earth, having remained virtually unchanged during the comings and goings of all the animals and plants that have ever lived. This book is a clear and accessible, illustrated account of the structure and formation of these remarkable constructions.

This book was released on 2007-01-03 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a landmark study of the Holocene evolution and functioning of a suite of seasonal wetland basins in the temperate coastal zone of Western Australia, which were added to the the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance because of their setting, their method of formation and deepening, their history of infilling, their complex hydrological mechanisms, and their dynamic hydrochemical and vegetation responses.
Book Synopsis Cool-water Carbonates by : H. M. Pedley
Download or read book Cool-water Carbonates written by H. M. Pedley and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2006 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, work on cool-water carbonates has expanded to become a mainstream research area. Studies on modern and Quaternary deposits will continue to be important; however, there is increasing momentum towards unravelling sediment processes, biota-sediment interactions and diagenetic products in Cenozoic and older cool-water carbonates. Many contributions in this book document Cenozoic and Quaternary carbonates from landlocked (microtidal) water-bodies. These carbonates display important differences in biota and fabric distributions when compared with world ocean examples. Consequently, the scientific community is now better placed to reinterpret pre-Tertiary carbonates where there is a suspicion that they have developed under microtidal conditions. Some papers in the book provide new approaches to interpreting environmental change within macrotidal regimes and others lay firm foundations for future cool-water carbonate diagenetic research. The aim of the book is to illustrate recent international contributions to cool-water carbonates research, with an emphasis on Neogene and Recent case studies. Contributions are divided into three sections: microtidal carbonates from the Mediterranean realm; macrotidal examples from New Zealand, Australia and Mexico; and early diagenetic fabrics.
Book Synopsis World Atlas of Holocene Sea-Level Changes by : J. Pluet
Download or read book World Atlas of Holocene Sea-Level Changes written by J. Pluet and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-11-20 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely study is concerned with the current record of sea-level changes during the past 10,000 years; their rates, and our ability to estimate these changes accurately. The author begins with an extensive introduction to the subject, covering the historical background and the possible causes of sea-level changes and the main methods used to reconstruct former sea-level positions. The second and main part of the Atlas provides a worldwide review of Holocene sea level changes by assembling some 800 local relative sea-level curves, deduced from field data from all parts of the world, and comparing these with over 100 curves predicted by geophysical models. This data is compiled in 77 regional plates, each containing 4-20 relative sea-level curves drawn to the same scale. These plates enable a visual assessment of geological trends in sea-level during the Holocene to be made.Comparing this data with trends deduced from tide gauges and near-future trends predicted by climate models, should enable more accurate assessment of near future sea-level changes on a local scale. The regional plates are fully annotated with locations, authors' names, year of publication and some indicative values of the spring tidal range in the region, as well as an accompanying text of comments. Finally, the author provides a state of the art review, proposes improvements in methodology and suggests directions for further study. An extensive bibliography of over 750 references, and two indexes complete the study. This comprehensive work contains data and interpretations of value to all those with an interest in regional geography, climatology, sea-level change, and environmental science.

Book Synopsis Sedimentology and Geochemistry of Modern and Ancient Saline Lakes by : Robin W. Renaut
Download or read book Sedimentology and Geochemistry of Modern and Ancient Saline Lakes written by Robin W. Renaut and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of papers grew out of a four-day symposium entitled "Sedimentary and Paleolimnological Records of Saline Lakes" held at Saskatoon, Canada in August, 1991. The aim of this Special Publication is to bring together selected papers from this conference that deal specifically with the sedimentological, inorganic geochemical, and hydrological aspects of salt lakes and their stratigraphic records. This volume is divided into four sections. The first section contains papers that deal with modern saline lakes. The second section contains papers dealing with sedimentation and diagenesis of late Quaternary salt lakes. The third and fourth sections contain papers devoted to ancient (pre-Quaternary) Lacustrine sequences.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Modern Coral Reefs by : David Hopley
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Modern Coral Reefs written by David Hopley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-26 with total page 1226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coral reefs are the largest landforms built by plants and animals. Their study therefore incorporates a wide range of disciplines. This encyclopedia approaches coral reefs from an earth science perspective, concentrating especially on modern reefs. Currently coral reefs are under high stress, most prominently from climate change with changes to water temperature, sea level and ocean acidification particularly damaging. Modern reefs have evolved through the massive environmental changes of the Quaternary with long periods of exposure during glacially lowered sea level periods and short periods of interglacial growth. The entries in this encyclopedia condense the large amount of work carried out since Charles Darwin first attempted to understand reef evolution. Leading authorities from many countries have contributed to the entries covering areas of geology, geography and ecology, providing comprehensive access to the most up-to-date research on the structure, form and processes operating on Quaternary coral reefs.
