Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reference source containing all the relevant information about Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), for people who practice or utilize hip sonography for the early detection and treatment of DDH. It aims at improving the population screening for DDH, thus contributing to the elimination of the disorder and its devastating consequences. What makes this book different from existing literature is the fact that, apart from the (updated) information about the disorder (including development, pathophysiology, etiology, pathogenesis, risk factors etc.) and a short technical guidance, the reader will find all relevant knowledge to organize training and set up screening. This includes analysis of the rationale behind universal sonographic screening, a comparative presentation of the sonographic techniques, teaching course structure / management and setting up a screening service, including audit, quality control of the scans etc. Special chapters about radiological diagnosis, imaging the consequences of non-diagnosis or maltreatment of the disorder, clinical management of DDH cases and shaping the future of hip sonography, are also provided. The book will be of interest to any medical doctor, but in particular to those working in the fields of radiology, pediatrics, orthopedics or general medicine, sonographers performing hip scans, or specialist nurses dealing with DDH.

Book excerpt: "I really like the design and clinical focus of this book and believe that it will stimulate critical thinking among its transatlantic target audience" (Hazel Edwards, Senior Sonographer, Lister Hospital, Stevenage) Organized by clinical problem rather than by body system, Clinical Guide to Sonography enables you to quickly find information related to the symptom being reported by the patient. This unique format covers various pathologies that may be related to a patient's symptoms, and features illustrations and sonograms that demonstrate each pathology. The book is divided into five major sections: abdomen, obstetrics, gynecology, superficial structures, and a miscellaneous section to include pediatric and vascular clinical indications. Each chapter within those sections focuses on a clinical indication, and incorporates background information, a clinical scenario, discussions of pathologies and differential diagnoses, illustrations, sonograms, patient scenarios with multiple choice and case-based questions to ensure you have a solid understanding of the material. "This book covers a wide range of ultrasound examinations looking at the clinical question first." Reviewed by: Allison Harris, Clinical Co-Ordinator, City University London, Date: Oct 14 "I really like the design and clinical focus of this book and believe that it will stimulate critical thinking among its transatlantic target audience. For UK readers, though, I feel it has less appeal." Reviewed by: RAD Magazine Date: July 2014 Symptom-based presentation makes it easy for beginning and experienced sonographers to quickly find information related to the patient’s symptom. Summary tables of differential diagnoses and sonographic findings provide you with a brief overview of all chapter material for quick reference. Clinical scenarios at the beginning of each chapter help you learn to apply information to the clinical setting. Case studies and discussion questions give you the opportunity to enhance your critical-thinking skills and measure your comprehension of material. Over 900 ultrasound images correlated to the pathology illustrate what you’ll encounter in the clinical setting. Glossary helps you define important terminology. Book excerpt: Infant developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a common condition in which the ball and socket joint of the hip is not formed properly. Current diagnosis techniques are controversial and lack firm agreement between physicians. Diagnosis is based on a joint application of physical examination and imaging of the hip, generally by two dimensional (2D) ultrasound. 2D ultrasound techniques are based upon the Graf method, which has many limitations such as high inter/intra- observer variability and large inter-scan variability. Understanding of DDH may be improved by adding secondary indices such as the acetabular radius of curvature discussed in this thesis. With recent improvements in 3D ultrasound, there may be added benefit in using this technology to image infant hips for the purpose of a more reliable diagnosis. The 3D inStability angle introduced in the thesis has high reliability and demonstrates preliminary diagnostic utility for the identification of dysplastic hips.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strong roots in basic science and research enhance clinical practice. This book is a rich source of information for basic scientists and translational researchers who focus on musculoskeletal tissues and for orthopedic and trauma surgeons seeking relevant up-to-date information on molecular biology and the mechanics of musculoskeletal tissue repair and regeneration. The book opens by discussing biomaterials and biomechanics, with detailed attention to the biologic response to implants and biomaterials and to the surface modification of implants, an important emerging research field. Finite element analysis, mechanical testing standards and gait analysis are covered. All these chapters are strongly connected to clinical applications. After a section on imaging techniques, musculoskeletal tissues and their functions are addressed, the coverage including, for example, stem cells, molecules important for growth and repair, regeneration of cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and peripheral nerves, and the genetic basis of orthopedic diseases. State-of-the-art applications such as platellet rich plasma were included. Imaging is a daily practice of scientists and medical doctors. Recent advancements in ultrasonography, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance, bone mineral density measurements using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, and scintigraphy was covered following conventional radiography basics. Further extensive sections are devoted to pathology, oncogenesis and tumors, and pharmacology. Structure is always related with function. Surgical anatomy was therefore covered extensively in the last section.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Parents’ Guide to Hip Dysplasia is the only consumer guide to one of the most common birth defects in our nation! Now instead of having to comb through medical texts or scour the internet for information, concerned parents of children with hip dysplasia can have all the information they need for treating their children at their fingertips. Hip dysplasia affects 1 in 1,000 babies, either as developmental hip dysplasia (DDH) or congential hip dysplasia (CDH). With this condition, the child’s hip joint structure does not fit together normally, and the problem can grow worse as the child grows. If untreated, the condition can cause serious hip problems in adulthood. Fortunately, this condition responds well to medical treatment, and this book guides concerned parents through all of the options and obstacles of treating a child with hip dysplasia. The book covers hip anatomy, risk factors, how diagnosis is made, how to communicate with doctors about the condition, and covers harnesses, braces, casts, surgery, and potential complications for children ages 0-17. The book also addresses the special care needs of children with hip dysplasia and how to manage pain at home. It concludes with a list of resources. Author Betsy Miller was treated for hip dysplasia as a child, and she was inspired to write this book to provide support and information to parents in an accessible, reader-friendly format.

Book excerpt: This compact resource offers ready access to information on exam preparation, equipment selection, clinical history, lab findings, etiology, and sonographic appearance for a wide variety of disorders. Based on the presenting symptoms, the reader is guided to the proper sections of the pocket guide to find information on disorders likely to cause the symptom. Each disorder section covers the most common causes of the disorder, related abnormal lab values, and sonographic appearance. Following these instructions, the sonographer can provide the physician with everything needed to make an accurate diagnosis, so the patient does not have to be called back for additional scanning. Convenient pocket-size format is easy to carry in lab coat pocket and organized with tabs to facilitate finding information quickly. Carefully chosen information provides just what the sonographer needs to scan competently — allowing the sonographer to gather all information the physician needs to make a diagnosis. All routine exams are presented for ob/gyn, abdominal, and superficial structures, plus some of the less commonly performed exams for which even experienced sonographers may need help. Leads the sonographer from the patient's symptoms to the appropriate scanning protocol, rather than assuming a given diagnosis and providing a scanning protocol to confirm the diagnosis. The Next Step provides more detailed scanning information, alerting the sonographer to other scanning that should be done based on the initial findings. Line drawings show relevant ultrasound images, providing example of anatomy that should be visualized on the scan.
