Download or read book Artificial Intelligence: Methodology, Systems, and Applications written by Darina Dicheva and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-09-03 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 14th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence: Methodology, Systems, Applications (AIMSA 2010) was held in Varna, Bulgaria, during September 8–10, 2010. The AIMSA conference series has provided a biennial forum for the presen- tion of artificial intelligence research and development since 1984. The conference covers the full range of topics in artificial intelligence (AI) and related disciplines and provides an ideal forum for international scientific exchange between Central/Eastern Europe and the rest of the world. The 2010 AIMSA edition continued this tradition. For AIMSA 2010, we decided to place special emphasis on the application and leverage of AI technologies in the context of knowledge societies where knowledge creation, accessing, acquiring, and sharing empower individuals and communities. A number of AI techniques play a key role in responding to these challenges. AI is - tensively used in the development of systems for effective management and flexible and personalized access to large knowledge bases, in the Semantic Web technologies that enable sharing and reuse of and reasoning over semantically annotated resources, in the emerging social Semantic Web applications that aid humans to collaboratively build semantics, in the construction of intelligent environments for supporting (human and agent) learning, etc. In building such intelligent applications, AI techniques are typically combined with results from other disciplines such as the social sciences, distributed systems, databases, digital libraries, information retrieval, service-oriented applications, etc.

Book Synopsis Essays on Port Economics by : Pablo Coto-Millán
Download or read book Essays on Port Economics written by Pablo Coto-Millán and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-23 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to offer a comprehensive overview of the economics of ports for scientists, students and professionals. The text is divided into five self-contained parts: the first chapter defines the demand for port services using an econometric approach. The second part analyzes the provision of port services using the production, cost, investment and profit functions of various ports. The third part combines the two previous parts in order to propound a general equilibrium approach. The fourth part looks at regulation, efficiency and the existence of ports as natural monopolies. Finally, the fifth part uses Cost Benefit Analysis for an economic evaluation of the feasibility of building new ports or enlarging existing ones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to establish a connection between the traditional field of empirical economic research and the emerging area of empirical financial research and to build a bridge between theoretical developments in these areas and their application in practice. Accordingly, it covers broad topics in the theory and application of both empirical economic and financial research, including analysis of time series and the business cycle; different forecasting methods; new models for volatility, correlation and of high-frequency financial data and new approaches to panel regression, as well as a number of case studies. Most of the contributions reflect the state-of-art on the respective subject. The book offers a valuable reference work for researchers, university instructors, practitioners, government officials and graduate and post-graduate students, as well as an important resource for advanced seminars in empirical economic and financial research.

Book Synopsis Lessons from Haiti’s Recent Exchange Rate Developments by : Ms. Rina Bhattacharya
Download or read book Lessons from Haiti’s Recent Exchange Rate Developments written by Ms. Rina Bhattacharya and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From August to October 2020, the Haitian authorities were successful at bringing about a sharp appreciation in the gourde/U.S. dollar exchange rate. This paper analyzes the factors behind this appreciation and its spillovers on the economy. It finds that foreign exchange surrender requirements had a statistically significant effect on the nominal exchange rate, while foreign exchange intervention by the central bank did not. Surrender requirements were also found to have raised trading costs and volatility in the foreign exchange market and contributed to the development of a wider parallel nominal exchange rate premium. This appreciation contributed to a decline in headline inflation during the episode while delivering some fuel subsidy-related savings to the government. Remittance-dependent households and exporters saw a drop in their purchasing power, and Haiti’s net external buffers were adversely affected. Following from these findings, the paper offers recommendations on ways to facilitate foreign exchange management and boost external sustainability while contributing to the central bank’s overall policy objectives.
Book Synopsis Seasonal Adjustment Methods and Real Time Trend-Cycle Estimation by : Estela Bee Dagum
Download or read book Seasonal Adjustment Methods and Real Time Trend-Cycle Estimation written by Estela Bee Dagum and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores widely used seasonal adjustment methods and recent developments in real time trend-cycle estimation. It discusses in detail the properties and limitations of X12ARIMA, TRAMO-SEATS and STAMP - the main seasonal adjustment methods used by statistical agencies. Several real-world cases illustrate each method and real data examples can be followed throughout the text. The trend-cycle estimation is presented using nonparametric techniques based on moving averages, linear filters and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, taking recent advances into account. The book provides a systematical treatment of results that to date have been scattered throughout the literature. Seasonal adjustment and real time trend-cycle prediction play an essential part at all levels of activity in modern economies. They are used by governments to counteract cyclical recessions, by central banks to control inflation, by decision makers for better modeling and planning and by hospitals, manufacturers, builders, transportation, and consumers in general to decide on appropriate action. This book appeals to practitioners in government institutions, finance and business, macroeconomists, and other professionals who use economic data as well as academic researchers in time series analysis, seasonal adjustment methods, filtering and signal extraction. It is also useful for graduate and final-year undergraduate courses in econometrics and time series with a good understanding of linear regression and matrix algebra, as well as ARIMA modelling.

Book Synopsis Time Series Econometrics by : Klaus Neusser
Download or read book Time Series Econometrics written by Klaus Neusser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text presents modern developments in time series analysis and focuses on their application to economic problems. The book first introduces the fundamental concept of a stationary time series and the basic properties of covariance, investigating the structure and estimation of autoregressive-moving average (ARMA) models and their relations to the covariance structure. The book then moves on to non-stationary time series, highlighting its consequences for modeling and forecasting and presenting standard statistical tests and regressions. Next, the text discusses volatility models and their applications in the analysis of financial market data, focusing on generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic (GARCH) models. The second part of the text devoted to multivariate processes, such as vector autoregressive (VAR) models and structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) models, which have become the main tools in empirical macroeconomics. The text concludes with a discussion of co-integrated models and the Kalman Filter, which is being used with increasing frequency. Mathematically rigorous, yet application-oriented, this self-contained text will help students develop a deeper understanding of theory and better command of the models that are vital to the field. Assuming a basic knowledge of statistics and/or econometrics, this text is best suited for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students.
