Book Synopsis Manual of Bioassessment of Aquatic Sediment Quality by : Alena Mudroch
Download or read book Manual of Bioassessment of Aquatic Sediment Quality written by Alena Mudroch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-09-17 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past generations of industrial development and chemical production are still very much with us-through contaminants they've left in all phases of the ecosystem. Especially vulnerable to this damage: water. Professionals from various disciplines in environmental sciences are becoming increasingly involved in water quality issues. The Manual of Bioassessment of Aquatic Sediment Quality now provides the most current techniques and methods, in the laboratory and the field, to detect and evaluate aquatic contaminants. Designed to complement the analytical methods presented in the companion volume, Manual of Physico-Chemical Analysis of Aquatic Sediments, the Bioassessment edition offers a comprehensive review of chemical forms, encompassing different elements and compounds in sediments, along with evaluation of their availability to aquatic biota. A discussion about the use of reference materials in sediment analysis also accompanies a review of laboratory safety measures. While greater environmental conscientiousness has led to sustainable industrial development and the recycling of materials, there remains the "hidden need" to remediate contaminated water sources throughout the world-essential to the continued survival of all life. The Manual of Bioassessment of Aquatic Sediment Quality will help environmental professionals ensure the protection of life-supporting streams, lakes and oceans throughout the world.
Book Synopsis Risk Assessment and Risk Management by : R E Hester
Download or read book Risk Assessment and Risk Management written by R E Hester and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk assessment is considered by many analysts to be an objective scientific tool. It is considered to be variously influenced by broader issues which in turn have important practical implications both for risk assessors and decision makers. Risk Assessment and Risk Management examines a range of practical applications of risk assessment methods and risk management procedures in the broad context of environmental science and technology. Written by acknowledged experts in the field, the articles cover a variety of areas, with reference to subjects as diverse as BSE, the use of risk assessment in government, using computer modelling as an aid to risk assessment in the case of accidental contamination of rivers and estuaries, quantitative cancer risk assessment related to carcinogens in the environment, landfilling of household wastes, environmental risk assessment and management of chemicals, and aquatic risk assessment and management of pesticides. This book provides a detailed and wide-ranging review of the many aspects of risk assessment and risk management which have excited so much debate and controversy in recent times. It will be essential reading for all those involved in the assessment and management of risk, particularly in the context of environmental science.

Book Synopsis New Microbiotests for Routine Toxicity Screening and Biomonitoring by : Guido Persoone

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The determination of the hazards resulting from the accidental or deli berate contamination of terrestrial and aquatic environments is in most countries still lirnited to the detection and quantification of the suspected pollutants by chemical analyses. Such an approach is unfortunately hampered by the following constraints : the costs as weil as the technical difficulties of analyzing every individual chemical which may be present in the sampies, and the difficulty of assessing the hazards and risks of environmental contaminations from a set of chemical data. During the last decades the scientific and regulatory community has gradually realized that biological methodologies have to be taken into consideration for an ecologically meaningful assessment of the toxicological hazards of contaminants. Effect evaluations obtained with biological techniques indeed integrate the impact of all the contaminants to which living biota are exposed. Bioassays with selected test species representative for the biological commumtles of the environments under consideration, are now applied more or less regularly to determine toxic and genotoxic effects. Taking into account the species specific and chemical specific character of toxicity to biota, the necessity of a «battery of tests» approach with species of different trophic levels is currently also generally accepted and implemented. It is dear that a balanced partnership between chemical, biological, toxicological and microbiological analyses is always the best strategy for generating the broadest information base on environmental hazards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediment Toxicity Assessment provides the latest information regarding how to evaluate sediment contamination and its effects on aquatic ecosystems. It presents an integrated ecosystem approach by detailing effective assessment methods, considerations, and effects to each major component of marine and freshwater systems, including the benthos, plankton, and fish communities. The approaches emphasize defining habitat conditions (physical and chemical), toxicant bioavailability, factors influencing toxicity (lab and field), biomarkers, acute and chronic toxicity, study design, collection methods, and EPA management strategies. The book also explains how to integrate the assessments. Sediment Toxicity Assessment will be useful to to all environmental managers, environmental scientists, ecotoxicologists, environmental regulators, aquatic ecologists, environmental contractors and consultants, instructors, students, conservation commissions, and environmental activist organizations.
