En este libro es muestra como estas propiedades peculiares afectan la propagacion de ondas electromagneticas en guias de ondas cilindricas rellenas de un cristal liquido nematico. Para este fin, se mencionan las generalidades los cristales liquidos comenzando con la clasificacion y las propiedades de algunas de las distintas mesofases, para continuar con la descripcion mesoscopica de la elasticidad de estos interesantes materiales. Despues se estudia el confinamiento de un cristal liquido nematico en un capilar cilindrico con condiciones de frontera de anclaje arbitrario y muy fuerte y se calcula la textura adoptada por el material. Enseguida, se revisa la propagacion de ondas en guias de ondas cilindricas huecas. Finalmente, se establece un formalismo para estudiar la propagacion electromagnetica en guias con nucleo de cristal liquido nematico."

Peter Markos and Costas Soukoulis begin by establishing the analogy between wave propagation in electronic systems and electromagnetic media and then show how the transfer matrix can be easily applied to any type of wave propagation, such as electromagnetic, acoustic, and elastic waves. The transfer matrix approach of the tight-binding model allows readers to understand its implementation quickly and all the concepts of solid-state physics are clearly introduced.
