Book Synopsis Singularity Hypotheses by : Amnon H. Eden
Download or read book Singularity Hypotheses written by Amnon H. Eden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singularity Hypotheses: A Scientific and Philosophical Assessment offers authoritative, jargon-free essays and critical commentaries on accelerating technological progress and the notion of technological singularity. It focuses on conjectures about the intelligence explosion, transhumanism, and whole brain emulation. Recent years have seen a plethora of forecasts about the profound, disruptive impact that is likely to result from further progress in these areas. Many commentators however doubt the scientific rigor of these forecasts, rejecting them as speculative and unfounded. We therefore invited prominent computer scientists, physicists, philosophers, biologists, economists and other thinkers to assess the singularity hypotheses. Their contributions go beyond speculation, providing deep insights into the main issues and a balanced picture of the debate.
Book Synopsis Systems Biology and Synthetic Biology by : Pengcheng Fu
Download or read book Systems Biology and Synthetic Biology written by Pengcheng Fu and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-08-13 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genomic revolution has opened up systematic investigations and engineering designs for various life forms. Systems biology and synthetic biology are emerging as two complementary approaches, which embody the breakthrough in biology and invite application of engineering principles. Systems Biology and Synthetic Biology emphasizes the similarity between biology and engineering at the system level, which is important for applying systems and engineering theories to biology problems. This book demonstrates to students, researchers, and industry that systems biology relies on synthetic biology technologies to study biological systems, while synthetic biology depends on knowledge obtained from systems biology approaches.
Book Synopsis Psychology of Shame by : Kevin G. Lockhart
Download or read book Psychology of Shame written by Kevin G. Lockhart and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To "feel ashamed" is perhaps one of the most studied human emotional experiences. Ironically, there is no agreement yet on what people mean when they say that they "feel ashamed". This can be reflected not only in the numerous definitions of the feeling but also in the numerous subjective understandings of it. In psychology, there are multiple definitions of shame. For example, Freud argued that shame was a reaction formation against sexual desires. In his eyes, the expression; "I feel ashamed" should be understood as being in the midst of an internal fight against pleasurable desires. In the later, psychodynamic tradition, the expression "I feel ashamed" should be understood as a scorning feeling that disable the client. This book discusses the psychology of shame. It explains the connection between shame and eating disorders; the role of shame in intimate and sexual violence; the psychological distress shame may cause in performing artists and athletes; positive interpersonal consequences of shame; the path to gelotophobia; the true meaning of feeling ashamed; and shame and masculinity in early China.
Book Synopsis Machine Medical Ethics by : Simon Peter van Rysewyk
Download or read book Machine Medical Ethics written by Simon Peter van Rysewyk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-05 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book, written by researchers from both humanities and science, describe various theoretical and experimental approaches to adding medical ethics to a machine, what design features are necessary in order to achieve this, philosophical and practical questions concerning justice, rights, decision-making and responsibility in medical contexts, and accurately modeling essential physician-machine-patient relationships. In medical settings, machines are in close proximity with human beings: with patients who are in vulnerable states of health, who have disabilities of various kinds, with the very young or very old and with medical professionals. Machines in these contexts are undertaking important medical tasks that require emotional sensitivity, knowledge of medical codes, human dignity and privacy. As machine technology advances, ethical concerns become more urgent: should medical machines be programmed to follow a code of medical ethics? What theory or theories should constrain medical machine conduct? What design features are required? Should machines share responsibility with humans for the ethical consequences of medical actions? How ought clinical relationships involving machines to be modeled? Is a capacity for empathy and emotion detection necessary? What about consciousness? This collection is the first book that addresses these 21st-century concerns.
Book Synopsis Thoughts on Unconventional Computing by : Andrew Adamatzky
Download or read book Thoughts on Unconventional Computing written by Andrew Adamatzky and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-28 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no strict definition of unconventional computing. Being an unconventional computist is not a matter of training but thinking and living. Phenomenologically most works on unconventional computing are about implementation of computing in novel substrates (chemical, physical, biological), development of computing schemes and algorithms not fitting into the mainstream framework, or designing of computing architectures inspired by chemical or biological systems. This short book gives a snapshot of the unconventional computing field. The world-leading experts in the unconventional computing author all articles of the issue. The topics include analog computation, sensing and computing with fungi, chemical computing, swarms of minimalist agents, computational universality, mega-computing in the universe, information and music, universal sensing, art of deduction, reversible computing, philosophy of machine learning, epistemic incompleteness, post-quantum unconventional computing, complexity of natural computing, arts and cellular automata. Articles presented are punchy and well illustrated. All articles are short and self-contained. The book will serve well as a light-touch introduction to unconventional computing for people not familiar with computing and might inspire artists and humanitarians to enter the field.
