(Organización Mundial de la Salud [OMS], 2018). En Puerto Rico particularmente, la cifra de nuevos casos de cáncer asciende los quince mil, siendo el cáncer colorrectal el tercero con mayor prevalencia(OMS, 2018). El objetivo del estudio fue evaluarla relación que existe entre la actividad física y el funcionamiento cognitivo, como también la mediación de la depresión en ésta relación. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 62 pacientes con cáncer colorrectal, que habían recibido tratamiento de quimioterapia, predominando el grupo de edad de 55 a 63 años. Los resultados de este estudio comprobaron que existe una asociación significativa entre la actividad física y el funcionamiento cognitivo en estos pacientes. Es así, como también, la depresión influye en el rendimiento relacionado al funcionamiento cognitivo. Estos hallazgos sugieren la prescripción médica de la actividad física como herramienta neuroprotectiva. Del igual forma, se resalta la importancia de educar al paciente oncológico acerca de los posibles impactos del tratamiento de quimioterapia en el funcionamiento cognitivo y salud mental.
