Book excerpt: Telemedicine, the practice of transferring medical data using interactive audio, visual and data communication systems, is fast becoming indispensable in modern medicine, healthcare and education. This volume reviews the rapidly expanding and changing field of telemedicine in general with a special focus on teledermatology. As well as presenting historical and technological aspects, the book also describes several of the many fields of application in detail - one of them being teleteaching which already forms an essential part of medical training. Another major issue in telemedicine is the discussion of legal and ethical aspects of teleconsulting. Further contributions acquaint the reader with the various possibilities of telemedicine such as telemedicine for the family doctor, teleradiology, applications in surgery, telepathology, telecardiology, telemedicine in oncology and ophthalmology, and telepsychiatry. The particular aspects of teledermatology are discussed in detail in a separate section. All healthcare professionals from the medical practitioner to the pharmacist, healthcare manager, nurse or technician will find this compilation of up-to-date data valuable reading. The detailed discussion of teledermatology makes it indispensable for the dermatologist.
Book Synopsis Accessible Tourism by : Dimitrios Buhalis
Download or read book Accessible Tourism written by Dimitrios Buhalis and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2011 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inclusion, disability, an ageing population and tourism are increasingly important areas of study due to their implications for both tourism demand and supply. This book therefore sets out to explore and document the current theoretical approaches, foundations and issues in the study of accessible tourism. In drawing together the contributions to this volume the editors have applied broader social constructionist approaches to understanding the accessible tourism phenomena. Accessible tourism, as with any area of academic study is an evolving field of academic research and industry practice. As with other areas of tourism, the field is multidisciplinary, and is influenced by various disciplines including geography, disability studies, economics, public policy, psychology and marketing. "As one would expect from two scholars at the height of their academic abilities, Dimitrios Buhalis and Simon Darcy have delivered a timely and much needed contribution to the under-served area of accessible tourism. Harnessing the best conceptual developments on the topic, Accessible Tourism is a scholarly yet hugely readable collection and readily communicates the various contributors' passion for and command of their subject. This collection is a must have text for anyone engaged in the theory, practice and policy of accessible tourism and will be essential reading on undergraduate and postgraduate courses across a range of disciplines and fields. I cannot speak highly enough of this endeavour and I'm sure it will take accessible tourism and universal design debates into the mainstream of academic enquiry and industry practice." Download or read book Digital Culture written by Charlie Gere and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2009-01-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From our bank accounts to supermarket checkouts to the movies we watch, strings of ones and zeroes suffuse our world. Digital technology has defined modern society in numerous ways, and the vibrant digital culture that has now resulted is the subject of Charlie Gere’s engaging volume. In this revised and expanded second edition, taking account of new developments such as Facebook and the iPhone, Charlie Gere charts in detail the history of digital culture, as marked by responses to digital technology in art, music, design, film, literature and other areas. After tracing the historical development of digital culture, Gere argues that it is actually neither radically new nor technologically driven: digital culture has its roots in the eighteenth century and the digital mediascape we swim in today was originally inspired by informational needs arising from industrial capitalism, contemporary warfare and counter-cultural experimentation, among other social changes. A timely and cutting-edge investigation of our contemporary social infrastructures, Digital Culture is essential reading for all those concerned about the ever-changing future of our Digital Age. “This is an excellent book. It gives an almost complete overview of the main trends and view of what is generally called digital culture through the whole post-war period, as well as a thorough exposition of the history of the computer and its predecessors and the origins of the modern division of labor.”—Journal of Visual Culture

Book Synopsis Health Assets in a Global Context by : Antony Morgan
Download or read book Health Assets in a Global Context written by Antony Morgan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As global health inequities continue to widen, policymakers are redoubling their efforts to address them. Yet the effectiveness and quality of these programs vary considerably, sometimes resulting in the reverse of expected outcomes. While local political issues or cultural conflicts may play a part in these situations, an important new book points to a universal factor: the prevailing deficit model of assessing health needs, which puts disadvantaged communities on the defensive while ignoring their potential strengths. The asset model proposed in Health Assets in a Global Context International Health and Development offers a necessary complement to the problem-focused framework by assessing multiple levels of health-promoting aspects in populations, and promoting joint solutions between communities and outside agencies. The book provides not only rationales and methodologies (e.g., measuring resilience and similar elusive qualities) but also concrete examples of asset-based initiatives in use across the world on the individual and community levels.
Book Synopsis Teaching Translation from Spanish to English by : Allison Beeby Lonsdale

This book was released on 1996 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many professional translators believe the ability to translate is a gift that one either has or does not have, Allison Beeby Lonsdale questions this view. In her innovative book, Beeby Lonsdale demonstrates how teachers can guide their students by showing them how insights from communication theory, discourse analysis, pragmatics, and semiotics can illuminate the translation process. Using Spanish to English translation as her example, she presents the basic principles of translation through 29 teaching units, which are prefaced by objectives, tasks, and commentaries for the teacher, and through 48 task sheets, which show how to present the material to students. Published in English.
