Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The underdeveloped areas of the world are becoming the crucial battleground between Communism and freedom. What types of people in these areas are attracted to Communism"? What is their understanding of the movement, and what do they hope to get out of it? What does it mean to them to join the Party, and why do they leave? In seeking answers to such questions, the author conducted detailed interviews with former members of the Malayan Communist Party, a pragmatic, ambitious group of Chinese Malayans. Their answers reveal important differences between Eastern and Western Communism, and suggest findings that are significant in meeting the threat of Communism not only in Malaya but in the rest of Asia. The author has used the methods of social science in interpreting his material and has concentrated on the problem of political behavior, about which less is known than of the military struggle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides an account of the origins, course, and outcome of the Malayan Emergency, which pitted the Malayan Government against the Malayan Communist Party, its rural-based guerilla army, and their supporters. Drawing on the widest set of sources used to date, the study goes well beyond traditional analyses of the Emergency and examines not just the military but also the administrative, economic, political, and social aspects of the guerrilla war. Taking a cue from the hearts and minds approach to the counter-guerrilla warfare, the study examines the hypothesis that the battleground of any guerrilla war is the general population whose actions are crucial in deciding how the war unfolds. The author sets out in detail the evolution of the policies of the Malayan Government and the Malayan Communist Party and plots the fortune of each side as the sympathies, allegiances, and actions of the people of Malaya were influenced by the constantly changing circumstances in which they found themselves. The study concludes by assessing the extent to which the lessons from the use of the hearts and minds approach in the Emergency maybe applied in the conduct of other counter-insurgency campaigns and by examining the impact of the guerrilla warfare on the political and economic development of Malaya and Malaysia.

Book Synopsis Red Star Over Malaya by : Cheah Boon Kheng
Download or read book Red Star Over Malaya written by Cheah Boon Kheng and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Red Star Over Malaya is an account of the inter-racial relations between Malays and Chinese during the final stages of the Japanese occupation. In 1947, none of the three major race of Malaya - Malays, Chinese, and Indians - regarded themselves as pan-ethnic "e;Malayans"e; with common duties and problems. With the occupation forcibly cut them off from China, Chinese residents began to look inwards towards Malaya and stake political claims, leading inevitably to a political contest with the Malays. As the country advanced towards nationhood and self-government, there was tension between traditional loyalties to the Malay rulers and the states, or to ancestral homelands elsewhere, and the need to cultivate an enduring loyalty to Malaya on the part of those who would make their home there in future. As Japanese forces withdrew from the countryside, the Chinese guerrillas of the communist-led resistance movement, the Malayan People's Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA), emerged from the jungle and took control of some 70 per cent of the country's smaller towns and villages, seriously alarming the Malay population. When the British Military Administration sought to regain control of these liberated areas, the ensuing conflict set the tone for future political conflicts and marked a crucial stage in the history of Malaya. Based on extensive archival research, Red Star Over Malaya provides a riveting account of the way the Japanese occupation reshaped colonial Malaya, and of the tension-filled months that followed Japan's surrender. This book is fundamental to an understanding of social and political developments in Malaysia during the second half of the 20th century.

Thanks to sound generalship and the dedication and resilience of the officers and men, the security forces eventually broke the terrorists’ resolve. 1st Battalion The Suffolk Regiment was just one of many British units involved in this successful campaign, known as the Malayan Emergency. Their tour between 1949 and 1953 coincided with the most crucial years when the future of the country and, arguably, the South East Asia region lay in the balance. As this book describes in words and superb contemporary images how the Battalion, the majority of whom were National Servicemen, operated under the most demanding jungle and climatic conditions, earning itself an enviable reputation. The Battalion’s experiences are well recorded here and typify those of tens of thousand servicemen whose efforts secured a unique victory.
Book Synopsis The War That Was Called 'an Emergency' by : Syd Kyle-Little
Download or read book The War That Was Called 'an Emergency' written by Syd Kyle-Little and published by Longueville Books. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the story of Australian Lieutenant Colonel Syd Kyle-Little's involvement in the Malayan 'Emergency' of 1951-1956. This was a guerrilla war fought between the Commonwealth Armed Forces and the military arm of the Malayan Communist Party, in which Syd Kyle-Little commanded a force of 12,000 Malay villagers. Kyle-Little was a larger-than-life character - the type of man that Australia's Northern Territory seems to breed better than many other parts of the country. His keen observations and diligent record-keeping make this book engaging and often disturbing reading as he articulately describes years of training and fighting in inhospitable jungle. The men who fought in this conflict, that was called an 'Emergency' instead of a war, were all heroes who won the battle against the communist insurgents because their hearts and minds rejected the communist way of life. Due largely to the efforts of men such as Kyle-Little and the 12,000 Malay soldiers, Malaysia the free, independent and proud nation it is today. '...as I look back on my life, I wonder how and why it was that I survived, for I have led no ordinary way of life.' - Syd Kyle-Little. This account of Syd Kyle-Little's time in Malaya, published posthumously, is a sequel to Whispering Wind, the autobiography of Kyle-Little's life in the Northern Territory from 1946-1950.

Book excerpt: Chin Peng joined the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) in January, 1940, as a 15 year-old schoolboy. His commitment to the communist cause, the pre-war anti-colonial struggle against Britain and, eventually, guerrilla warfare against the Japanese invaders saw him propelled rapidly to senior positions within the CPM party structure. By the age of 18 he had become the key link between the communists' Malayan Peoples Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA) and Britain's clandestine Force 136, then endeavouring to set up intelligence-gathering operations behind enemy lines. While still a teenager he was promoted to head the communist movement's activities in his home state of Perak. Immediately following the Japanese surrender, Chin Peng was appointed to the Central Committee and, ultimately, his party's policy-making Politburo. He was barely 21, At 23, he was formally named the CPM's Secretary General, its highest-ranking figure. By June, 1948, the Malayan Emergency erupted and Chin Peng, four months shy of his 24th year, became the British Empire's most wanted man.
