Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public reading programs are flourishing in many Latin American cities in the new millennium. They defy the conception of reading as solitary and private by literally taking literature to the streets to create new communities of readers. From institutional and official to informal and spontaneous, the reading programs all use public space, distribute creative writing to a mass public, foster collective rather than individual reading, and provide access to literature in unconventional arenas. The first international study of contemporary print culture in the Americas, Public Pages reveals how recent cultural policy and collective literary reading intervene in public space to promote social integration in cities in Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Chile. Marcy Schwartz looks at broad institutional programs such as UNESCO World Book Capital campaigns and the distribution of free books on public transportation, as well as local initiatives that produce handmade books out of recycled materials (known as cartoneras) and display banned books at former military detention centers. She maps the connection between literary reading and the development of cultural citizenship in Latin America, with municipalities, cultural centers, and groups of ordinary citizens harnessing reading as an activity both social and literary. Along with other strategies for reclaiming democracy after decades of authoritarian regimes and political violence, as well as responding to neoliberal economic policies, these acts of reading collectively in public settings invite civic participation and affirm local belonging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neoliberalism in Mexico - characterized by free markets, by the privitization of thousands of State enterprises, and by influence from Washington and Wall Street - has forever changed the political climate, making it necessary to theorize new paths for the future. Indeed, liberal ideology champions not only economic freedom but individual liberty as well: In the canon of liberal texts, Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations coexists with John Stuart Mill's The Subjugation of Women, a biting commentary on gender inequality. The debate over neoliberalism in Mexico is not exclusively a left-right conflict. Many leftists see ties with the U.S. as a means to promote social change even though they oppose neoliberal economics; many on the right, while supporting neoliberalism, fear social influences from the North. This volume focuses on the neoliberal debate in plays by four Mexican authors: Sabina Berman, Vicente Lenero, Victor Hugo Rascon Banda, and Alejandra Trigueros. These playwrights stage the complexity of neoliberalism, providing insight into a global trend and its manifestation in Mexico. Stuart A. Chapel Hill.

Book excerpt: The topics of this book are the mathematical foundations of non-relativistic quantum mechanics and the mathematical theory they require. The main characteristic of the book is that the mathematics is developed assuming familiarity with elementary analysis only. Moreover, all the proofs are carried out in detail. These features make the book easily accessible to readers with only the mathematical training offered by undergraduate education in mathematics or in physics, and also ideal for individual study. The principles of quantum mechanics are discussed with complete mathematical accuracy and an effort is made to always trace them back to the experimental reality that lies at their root. The treatment of quantum mechanics is axiomatic, with definitions followed by propositions proved in a mathematical fashion. No previous knowledge of quantum mechanics is required. This book is designed so that parts of it can be easily used for various courses in mathematics and mathematical physics, as suggested in the Preface. The book is of interest to researchers and graduate students in functional analysis, who can see how closely an important part of their chosen field is linked with quantum mechanics, and also to physicists, who can see how the abstract language of functional analysis brings unity to the apparently distinct approaches employed in quantum theory.

Book excerpt: The aim of the volume is to contribute towards a better understanding of inflectional morphology, as well as to provide a platform for researchers to discuss their results in the light of the particular framework they have chosen to work in. The first paper provides an overview of the main controversies within the area of inflection. Other papers deal with general aspects such as the difference between derivation and inflection, irregular verb inflection, animacy, and clitics. These are followed by studies on functional categories, the acquisition of inflection, a formal implementation of Russian verb inflection, and finally articles that deal specifically with aspects of German inflection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LOVING THE GRINGO, A BICULTURAL LIFE describes a special, long and loving relationship, through real life anecdotes. The first time I laid eyes on my Gringo, he was doing the "twist," and I learned about the US "native" dance of the times. He resisted embracing my love for the opera, but did become enamored of our language, our way of life, and our food! Light, funny, and unexpected, these stories morror the lives and adventures of husbands, wives, parents, children, grandparents, friends and colleagues, as they cope with multicultural challenges. LOVING THE GRINGO affords the American reader a charming view of one couple's unique marriage, here in the States and in the Republic of Uruguay. The reader is continually captivated by the progression of their lives and their varied experiences. It is a "must read" for all ages, giving one a feeling of "I am so glad I read that!" Upon finishing the last paragraph the words of the eldest granddaughter, at five, echo in my ears: "I love their life!" Arch Manning, Retired Educator and another Gringo husband. LOVING THE GRINGO can also provide a unique resource for educators of multicultural studies. The acquisition of Spanish by my Gringo, makes a perfect case for the communicative approach. An additional resource is a short skit about a visit by some Gringa girls to Uruguay, and their experiences through the Christmas holiday celebrations. As an ESOL practitioner, I have spent hours looking for reading materials dealing with American cultural confusions. Many books I have perused have been the "multicultural" reader type with stories about Eskimos, Native Americans, Chinese, or stories about famous Americans. ESOL students want to read stories that give them insights into the American culture they have to deal with. Patricia Peabody, Retired Adult ESOL Instructor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How well have classic ideas on whole-word phonology stood the test of time? Waterson claimed that each child has a system of their own; Ferguson and Farwell emphasized the relative accuracy of first words; Menn noted the occurrence of regression and the emergence of phonological systematicity. This volume brings together classic texts such as these with current data-rich studies of British and American English, Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Finnish, French, Japanese, Polish and Spanish. This combination of classic and contemporary work from the last thirty years presents the reader with cutting-edge perspectives on child language by linking historical approaches with current ideas such as exemplar theory and usage-based phonology, and contrasting state-of-the-art perspectives from developmental psychology and linguistics. This is a valuable resource for cognitive scientists, developmentalists, linguists, psychologists, speech scientists and therapists interested in understanding how children begin to use language without the benefit of language-specific innate knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many years ago, after Bill and I returned from conducting a teacher training session, we were having lunch in our Florida room, rehashing the experience and laughing at our mishaps. A young man, Bruce, was busy building a new wet bar for us when he interrupted his work to inquire. Excuse me, but I am in the middle of a nasty divorce, and you two seem to have such a happy relationship. What does it take? Taken off guard, we improvised. A good sense of humor, a common interest, mutual respect . . . When Bruce started to leave, I stopped him. Bruce, it is none of the above. It is loving each other. Since then, I have been mulling it over. What exactly does marital love consist of? Maybe it actually is all of the above, but I sense that manifestations of a real caring for each other vary with idiosyncrasies, personalities, moods, and circumstances. As romantic love settles into daily routines with memories and histories to bind us tighter and tighter together, we become one. Almost literally, we are one body and one being, feeling the good and the bad in each other like Siamese twins in one body, one mind, one heart!

Book excerpt: This is the very first publication mapping onomatopoeia in the languages of the world. The publication provides a comprehensive, multi-level description of onomatopoeia in the world’s languages. The sample covers six macro-areas defined in the WALS: Euroasia, Africa, South America, North America, Australia, Papunesia. Each language-descriptive chapter specifies phonological, morphological, word-formation, semantic, and syntactic properties of onomatopoeia in the particular language. Furthermore, it provides information about the approach to onomatopoeia in individual linguistic traditions, the sources of data on onomatopoeia, the place and the function of onomatopoeia in the system of each language.
