No trace was found after much searching. Then the smoking sight of the ruins of a large airplane in the Rockies got everyones attention. A secret from an old man (who later disappears) leads them to a hidden cavern. The cavern was found to be guarded by unidentifiable paramilitary people who didnt recognize the FBI as an authority. Much mystery surrounded the cavern, and the FBI agents Ben Harper and Wilson Trapper intended to find out if it was real or if it was all a plot of terrorists. Meanwhile, war seemed to be coming about in the Middle East between Iran and Israel, which both now appeared to have nuclear weapons, and the world was tense about being drawn into something that may lead to the end of mankind. Most countries were on full alert when the very bold vice president, acting as president, sent nuclear-armed warplanes to the area, hoping to defuse the situation. But he had his own personal problems, and the people wanted the elected president found. A suspicious waitress in Denver had secrets about the vice president and solicited one of his aides in her schemes, which would lead to turmoil. Then an assassination attempt happened when the vice president had his hands full of problems already. It appeared that his suspicious aide committed suicide, but something looked suspicious. Ben Harpers sexy dream about the waitress led him to cold sweats. Was he right about her? He wanted to find a new wife after a life-jolting divorce but not with this woman. He must keep on searching. Ben and Wilson were led through one deception after another and then to an isolated location where they suspected the president could be held, if he was still alive. They were at wits end when they suspected that a coup to take over control from the president may be happening. Then they found out that something important was missing, which made them even more suspicious. They must find out the truth. But their search created even more mystery, and everything led them further astray. The surprise ending brought all the unusual, unanswered happenings to an end.

Guard and regular Air Force had become vital to each other; in return for modern aircraft, a substantial peacetime mission, and upon mobilization integration into the wartime force, the Guard accepted de facto control by the regular Air Force. Air National Guard members have served around the world and their military experience and civilian skills have proven invaluable as our nation prosecuted conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. They also served during several major contingencies including the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Berlin Crisis if 1961 and 1962. In addition, Air Guard members made major contributions in a host of other operations in Panama, the Balkans, Somalia, Rwanda, Haiti, and the Iraq no-fly zones instituted after Operation Desert Strom. In the United States, the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts brought into sharp focus the Air Guard's well-established role as America's hometown Air Force. The Air National Guard flew over 3,000 sorties, moved over 30,000 passengers, and hauled over 11,000 tons of desperately needed supplies into Gulf Coast airfields, some of which Guard personnel opened and operated. Air National Guard members rescued 1,443 people--heroically saving people stranded by the flood. At eight sites along the Gulf Coast, Air National Guard medical units treated more than 15,000 patients, combining expert medical care with compassion.

Book excerpt: Petlyakov's Pe-2 was the most numerous Soviet twin-engined bomber of World War 2, the aircraft being used as a dive-bomber, ground attack platform and dedicated reconnaissance type. The first examples entered service in August 1940, and by the time production came to end in late 1945, no fewer than 10,547 examples had been built. These equipped more than 80 bomber air regiments, and of the latter, two were accorded Guards Air Corps status, as were six air regiments. Amongst the former was the 2nd Guards Bomber Air Corps, which was commanded by the legendary General Polbin, who was twice made a Hero of the Soviet Union. Pe-2 bomber and reconnaissance versions (the latter in service with four Guards reconnaissance air regiments of the Air Force and one regiment of Naval Aviation) were extensively used from the frozen Arctic north to the balmy Crimea front. A number of Pe-2 also saw brief combat against Japan in the final weeks of World War 2.

One way to support warfighting and warfighters is to continue to support the Air and Space Expeditionary Force (AEF), a concept developed by the Air Force to allow quick response, when appropriate, to national security interests with a tailored, sustainable force. The ANG already plays an important role in the AEF during wartime operations. This monograph evaluates options for Air National Guard combat support and reachback missions in four Air Force mission areas to support the AEF, investigates transformational opportunities for the ANG that would add the most value in achieving the desired operational effects, and considers how changes in unit and above-unit policies are likely to affect Total Force capabilities. It should be of interest to logisticians, operators, and mobility planners throughout the Department of Defense, especially those in the Air National Guard and active Air Force.
