Book Synopsis The House of Others by : Silvio D'Arzo
Download or read book The House of Others written by Silvio D'Arzo and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The illegitimate son of a fortune teller, Ezio Comparoni (1920-52) never knew his father, rarely left his home town, and admitted no one to his home. His deliberate obscurity was compounded by his use of many pseudonyms, including Silvio d'Arzo, under which he wrote the remarkable novella and three stories collected in The House of Others. The novella The House of Others is among the rare perfect works of twentieth century fiction. In a desolate mountain village an old woman visits the parish priest, ostensibly to ask about dissolving a marriage. Gradually, as she probes for information on "special cases"--cases in which what is obviously wrong can also be irrefutably right--it becomes clear her true question is whether or not she might take her own life. The question is metaphysical, involving not only the woman's life but the priest's; and to it he has no answer.

Book Synopsis Hymns and Fragments by : Friedrich Hölderlin
Download or read book Hymns and Fragments written by Friedrich Hölderlin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An annotated bilingual edition of Hölderlin’s radical and influential late poetry Despite his influence on such figures as Nietzsche, Rilke, Heidegger, and Celan, Friedrich Hölderlin (1770–1843) is only now being fully appreciated as perhaps the first great modern of European poetry. Drawing on the most recent scholarship, this annotated translation conveys the radical idiom and vision that continue to make him a contemporary. Richard Sieburth includes almost all Hölderlin’s late poems in free rhythms from the years between 1801 and 1806, the period just prior to his hospitalization for insanity. Sieburth’s critical introduction discusses the poet’s career, assesses his role as the link between classicism and romanticism, and explores Hölderlin’s ongoing importance to modern poetics and philosophy. Annotations explicate the individual poems, a number of which are translated into English for the first time.
Book Synopsis A Sumerian Observation of the Köfels' Impact Event by : Alan Bond
Download or read book A Sumerian Observation of the Köfels' Impact Event written by Alan Bond and published by Writersprintshop. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 700 BC an Assyrian scribe in the Royal Place at Nineveh made a copy of one of the most important documents in the royal collection. Two and a half thousand years later it was found by Henry Layard in the remains of the palace library. It ended up in the British Museum's cuneiform clay tablet collection as catalogue No. K8538 (also called the Planisphere), where it has puzzled scholars for over a hundred and fifty years. In this monograph Bond and Hempsell provide the first comprehensive translation of the tablet, showing it to be a contemporary Sumerian observation of an Aten asteroid over a kilometre in diameter that impacted Kofels in Austria in the early morning of 29th June 3123 BC."
Book Synopsis Luisa and the Silence by : Claudio Piersanti
Download or read book Luisa and the Silence written by Claudio Piersanti and published by Marlboro Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piersanti uses sharp detail and nuance to construct an everyday life. Luisa and the Silence is the portrait of an ordinary person, distinctive neither in appearance nor in the depth of her thoughts. Avoiding any pretension to social criticism, Piersanti instead has created a daring novel where the main character simply is.
