This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guanidino compounds comprise Creatine, Arginine, and the Guanidines. In the past two years there have been over 2000 published articles with the names of these compounds in the title. One can go to any nutrition or health food store and buy these as supplements because it is believed they improve health and athletic performance. This volume includes an up to date summary of the scientific and clinical aspects of essentially all the biologically active Guanidino Compounds. The articles summarize the current scientific knowledge of these compounds with reference to relevant clinical conditions, and discuss the chemical, biological, and clinical functions of these compounds.

Download or read book Guanidines 2 written by Akitane Mori and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989-07 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guanidine is named for its similarity to the purine guanine which, in turn, is named for its principal source guano, which comes from the Inca word, huano, for dung. Guanidine, therefore, translates into dung-like, which is hardly a genteel way to introduce a subject. On the other hand, texts are seldom inspirational, "frequently crude and rarely literary and should be judged on how successfully they assemble, organize and present current data. I am impressed that the material which fol]ows goes a long way toward successfully achieving those goals. Tue International Guanidine Society is a synthesis of three groups of investigators: biologists studying guanidines as phosphagens, neurologists interested in guanidines as convulsants and nephrologists involved with guanidines as toxins. As a member of the latter group. I am gratified by the considerable progress this book represents. To begin with. there now appears to be a common theme which unifies current speculation concerning the metabolic origin of the guanidines in uremia. At the First International Congress in 1983, evidence was presented which supported the theory that certain guanidines were products of the mixed function oxidation of urea. This year's meeting brings together overwhelming data showing that methyl guanidine is an effect of active oxygen reacting with creatinine. An idolatry, worshipped throughout biochemistry, that urea and creatinine are inert byproducts of protein metabolism, is shown to have feet of clay.

Download or read book Uremic Toxins written by Toshimitsu Niwa and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews all the latest basic and clinical research findings With contributions from leading international experts in the field, this book is dedicated to all facets of uremic toxins research, including low molecular weight solutes, protein-bound solutes, and middle molecules. Moreover, it covers everything from basic mass spectrometry research to the latest clinical findings and practices. Uremic Toxins is divided into three sections: Section One, Uremic Toxins, explores the definition, classification, listing, and mass spectrometric analysis of uremic toxins Section Two, Selected Uremic Toxins, describes key uremic toxins, explaining chemical structures, metabolism, analytical methods, plasma levels, toxicity, clinical implications, and removal methods. Among the uremic toxins covered are indoxyl sulfate, asymmetric dimethylarginine, PTH, ß2-microglobulin, and AGEs Section Three, Therapeutic Removal of Uremic Toxins, describes how uremic toxins can be removed by hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and oral sorbent All chapters are based on the authors' thorough review of the literature as well as their own personal laboratory and clinical experience. References at the end of each chapter provide a gateway to the literature in the field. Reviewing all the latest basic and clinical research findings, Uremic Toxins will help bench scientists in nephrology advance their own investigations. It will also help clinicians take advantage of the latest tested and proven treatments for the management of chronic kidney disease.
