It is a modern scientific-technical, educational, and cultural center. Thus, it is incredibly popular among travelers. The city's name is associated with numerous controversial stories. Just a few decades ago, residents of European countries called this city Canton. It is believed that the modern name of the city has appeared because of an incorrect interpretation of the Cantonese dialect. It is noteworthy that nowadays some Europeans officially use the old name of Guangzhou Canton. It's hard to imagine that the stylish and large metropolis is one of the oldest cities in the world. In fact, Guangzhou is more than 2,000 years old. According to the historical records, it was founded in 862 BC as a trading port. At that time, this small town was the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road. The strategic location of the city largely contributed to its rapid development. Notably, during its long history, the city has always been an important center of shopping. At the present time, Guangzhou is also known as a major center of trade. It is famous for its ultra-modern shopping malls and colorful markets. It attracts not only shoppers but also adherents of excursion tourism. The city has managed to preserve its priceless historical monuments that belong to different eras. The territory of Guangzhou is home to more than 120 historical monuments of the national level. Besides that, tourists certainly love to attend modern convention centers and galleries.

Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled A Comparative Study of the Business Environment of Guangzhou and Shanghai Submitted by Lee Yin Yi, Joey For the degree of Master of Arts (China Area Studies) at The University of Hong Kong in June 2004 Since the late 1970s, under Deng's rule, the central government has decided to develop Guangdong as the 'one step ahead' in China. Having fully benefited from the support of the central government, Guangdong, in particular the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region has successfully built up its favourable business environment and has enjoyed the great economic growth since the 1980s. Among various cities in the PRD, the provincial capital Guangzhou, has incessantly gained the dominant position in economic growth. After consolidating the economic position of southern China, the Yangtze River Delta has become another centre attention to the central government in the national development programme since the 1990s. By opening Pudong and positioning Shanghai as the leader of the Yangtze River Region for attracting domestic commerce and foreign investment, the central government intended to create the Yangtze River Delta as another ideal business environment in China. The Yangtze Delta has successfully developed its favourable environment for business activities since the 1990s. Reviewing the twenty-year reform, the emergence of the successful business environment in the Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta for boosting economic and commercial activities seems to be the economic engine of the whole China's economic development. As the premier cities of the Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta respectively, the business environment of Guangzhou and Shanghai are the best representations of the new economic direction and situation in China, thus they serve as the worthwhile study topic in understanding China's contemporary development. The objective of this study is to examine the similarities and differences of Guangzhou and Shanghai in terms of business environment and to explore the economic importance of Guangzhou and Shanghai for China's development during the past two decades. Finally, this study can conclude that, in spite of many similarities, there is no direct competition occurred between Shanghai and Guangzhou in terms of business environment as their levels of development are somehow different. As long as Shanghai provides better conditions for upbringing the business environment, Shanghai enjoys the overall better development than Guangzhou. There is still a considerable gap for Guangzhou to catch up Shanghai in a short term. Nevertheless, there is little evidence that Shanghai is preferable to Guangzhou for operating business. Both cities carry their own economic uniqueness in their regions. Shanghai undeniably serves as the Asian metropolitan of China, whereas Guangzhou acts as the regional economic centre in southern China. Shanghai is the dragonhead of eastern China and involves more international business activities; Guangzhou mainly serves southern China and engages close interactions with Hong Kong and Macau. It is based on the invaluable practical experience of entrepreneur Johan Björkstén, who successfully built a local consulting business with over 100 employees, and Anders Hägglund, a seasoned manager who set up high-growth and highly profitable operations in China for a major industrial multinational. The book provides widely applicable advice based on experiences from different industries, including but not limited to those of the authors. Most books about business in China belong to one of two categories: autobiographical “success stories” or academic treatises. Managing in China goes beyond these genres to provide highly relevant, practical advice and checklists, as well as concrete and illustrative examples from the authors' own experience. Managing in China succinctly explains how historical, cultural and social factors influence today's Chinese business environment, and how managers should take this into account in day-to-day operations. The book focuses on managing in a rapid-growth environment, but also provides advice on how to ensure sustainable operations and profitability in mature industries or a temporary downturn.

Book excerpt: CHINA CEO: A Case Guide for Business Leaders in China Some Western business leaders are moving into China without any clear knowledge of the many pitfalls they will encounter: the weak rule of law, forceful governmental intervention, a scarcity of managerial talent, the likelihood of counterfeiting, the fast paced business environment and surprisingly aggressive local competitors. This book uses case studies to both illuminate and examine these key managerial challenges. Each case focuses on a specific topic and is complemented with commentaries from professors and executives who have extensive front-line experience in China. The cases are the product of three-year research and are well-tested in MBA and executive courses. The authors' philosophy is that readers can learn most effectively through the experience of others captured in real cases! The book includes a broad range of companies, such as Emerson, Eli Lily, General Motors, Peugeot, Carrefour, Daimler-Chrysler, Picanol. It also includes more personal experiences concerning the many challenges of expatriate-living in China , some of whom have started their own businesses. The book provides concise but insightful analysis to help readers to get the most from the case studies. As a result, this book will help you get better prepared to face the varied challenges you will find in China. These cases complement the material presented in a previous work, China CEO: Voices of Experience from 20 International Business Leaders, also published by John Wiley & Sons.
