Book Synopsis Recent Progress in Slow Sand and Alternative Biofiltration Processes by : Rolf Gimbel
Download or read book Recent Progress in Slow Sand and Alternative Biofiltration Processes written by Rolf Gimbel and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2006-03-31 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slow sand filtration is typically cited as being the first "engineered" process in drinking-water treatment. Proven modifications to the conventional slow sand filtration process, the awareness of induced biological activity in riverbank filtration systems, and the growth of oxidant-induced biological removals in more rapid-rate filters (e.g. biological activated carbon) demonstrate the renaissance of biofiltration as a treatment process that remains viable for both small, rural communities and major cities. Biofiltration is expected to become even more common in the future as efforts intensify to decrease the presence of disease-causing microorganisms and disinfection by-products in drinking water, to minimize microbial regrowth potential in distribution systems, and where operator skill levels are emphasized. Recent Progress in Slow Sand and Alternative Biofiltration Processes provides a state-of-the-art assessment on a variety of biofiltration systems from studies conducted around the world. The authors collectively represent a perspective from 23 countries and include academics, biofiltration system users, designers, and manufacturers. It provides an up-to-date perspective on the physical, chemical, biological, and operational factors affecting the performance of slow sand filtration (SSF), riverbank filtration (RBF), soil-aquifer treatment (SAT), and biological activated carbon (BAC) processes. The main themes are: comparable overviews of biofiltration systems; slow sand filtration process behavior, treatment performance and process developments; and alternative biofiltration process behaviors, treatment performances, and process developments.
Book Synopsis High Performance Pigments by : Hugh MacDonald Smith
Download or read book High Performance Pigments written by Hugh MacDonald Smith and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the ideal companion to Wiley's trilogy: The Pigments Handbook (1988), Industrial Organic Pigments (1997), and Industrial Inorganic Pigments (1998). High Performance Pigments have become increasingly important in recent years, with a growth rate well in advance of the more classical types of pigments. The book offers both producers and users of High Performance Pigments the opportunity to review and update their understanding of latest technologies and market issues impacting both inorganic and organic High Performance Pigments, together with assessing key regulatory affairs, in this specialty niche of the chemical industry. The manufacture of High Performance Pigments is today a global industry. This is reflected in the multinational expertise of the over twenty experts, drawn from Europe, North America and Asia, who have authored chapters in this book. No professional today can afford to waste time on unfocussed research. This book will effectively help chemists, physicists, engineers, applications and regulatory specialists, and materials scientists to stay ahead in this fast-changing field.

Book Synopsis Plant Responses to the Environment by : Peter M. Gresshoff
Download or read book Plant Responses to the Environment written by Peter M. Gresshoff and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-07-23 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Responses to the Environment covers the fundamental mechanisms of plant responses to biotic and abiotic environmental stimuli. By combining established disciplines like physiology and genetics with new approaches stemming from molecular biology and biophysics, a new synthesis is achieved. For example, this book deals with the effects of microgravity on plant development, and it provides an extensive analysis of plant perception and response to low oxygen and high ozone. New techniques such as those used for gene transfer using the biolistic gene gun approach in soybeans are described. Other topics considered include systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in plants and recent advances in understanding how legume roots perceive bacterial lipooligosaccharide signals. A glossary, subject index, and author index are also provided. Plant Responses to the Environment will be a valuable reference for plant physiologists, ecophysiologists, agronomists, plant molecular biologists, experimental botanists, and other researchers interested in the topic.
