Book excerpt: Are you afraid of things that go bump in the night? Don't look now, but some of the most gruesome serial murders occured in your neighborhood. Fourteen-year-old Jesse Pomeroy had a long history of terrorizing and brutalizing young boys around Boston, then his thoughts turned to murder. Meet America's youngest serial killer. When asked why he did it, all he could say was: "I don't know. I had to." The Servant Girl Murders in Austin, Texas during 1885 puzzled investigators. Three black servant girls, and one of their boyfriends, were brutally beaten and raped in the dark of the night. Texans didn't take it seriously until two white women lost their lives on Christmas Eve. The killer was never found, but many speculate he went on to fame as Jack the Ripper, London's famed Whitechapel killer. Henry Bastian, a Milan, Illinois farmer devised a unique method of getting cheap labor. He paid his farmhands a few dollars up front and promised them big money at the end of a years' service. Then he killed them, instead of paying them. At least nine young men lost their lives to his scheme. Belle Gunness, the La Porte, Indiana serial killer, lured men to her murder farm by advertising for a husband in Scandinavian Matrimonial Magazines. As many as forty-two men fell victim to her wiles. The Sunday Night Murderer rode the rails in the Midwest spreading terror in his wake. Twenty-five men, women, and children fell victim to his ax between 1911 and 1912. He slipped into homes in the middle of the night, bashed his victims heads to a pulp, and moved on without leaving a clue to his identity. The Dayton Strangler took six victims between 1900 and 1909. He lured them away to a quiet area, choked them nearly to death, then assaulted them. When he finished, the strangler dumped his victims in outhouse vaults. Henry Spencer, Chicago's "Tango Murderer," killed upwards of thirty men and women. "I became cold-blooded," he said. "For five-cents, I would kill a man and drink his blood." After his capture he reveled the police with stories about how he took his victims. Bertha Gifford was a typical grandma, except for her tendency for homicide. She poisoned at least nineteen people she was charged with nursing back to health. After her arrest, she told detectives, "Arsenic helped me. I thought it might help them, too." After you read it, you will never look at your neighbors the same way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this memoir, a forensic psychiatrist chronicles her work with more than 80 serial killers and her thoughts on what compels them. Judging by appearances, Dr. Helen Morrison has an ordinary life in the suburbs of a major city. She has a physician husband, two children, and a thriving psychiatric clinic. But her life is more than that. She is one of the world’s leading experts on serial killers, and has spent as many as four hundred hours alone in rooms with depraved murderers, digging deep into killers’ psyches in ways no profiler ever has before. In My Life among the Serial Killers, Dr. Morrison relates how she profiled the Mad Biter, Richard Otto Macek, who chewed on his victims’ body parts, stalked Dr. Morrison, then believed she was his wife. She did the last interview with Ed Gein, who was the inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. John Wayne Gacy, the clown-obsessed killer of young men, sent her crazed Christmas cards and gave her his paintings as presents. Then there was Atlanta child killer Wayne Williams; rapist turned murderer Bobby Joe Long; Fred and Rosemary West, who killed girls and women in their Gloucester “House of Horrors”; and Brazil’s deadliest killer of children, Marcelo Costa de Andrade. Dr. Morrison has received hundreds of letters from killers, read their diaries and journals, evaluated crime scenes, testified at their trials, and studied photos of the gruesome carnage. She has interviewed the families of the victims—and the spouses and parents of the killers—to gain a deeper understanding of the killer’s environment and the public persona they adopt. She has also studied serial killers throughout history and shows how this is not a recent phenomenon with psychological autopsies of the fifteenth-century French war hero Gilles de Rais, the sixteenth-century Hungarian Countess Bathory, H.H. Holmes of the late nineteenth-century, and Albert Fish of the Roaring Twenties. Through it all, Dr. Morrison’s goal has been to discover the reasons serial killers are compelled to murder, how they choose their victims, and what we can do to prevent their crimes in the future. Her provocative conclusions will stun you. Praise for My Life Among the Serial Killers “A scary piece of work, with even scarier implications.” —Kirkus Reviews “A profoundly enlightening book. Morrison provides startling insights into what factors breed serial killers, and she avoids the broad generalizations that make other books of the topic seem slick and superficial. . . . This is an absorbing, disturbing book that makes it clear just how much we have yet to learn.” —Booklist

Book excerpt: Serial killers fascinates...Extreme cases even more soFrom John Wayne Gacy to Jeffrey Dahmer, many of America's most famous murderers have entered into the collective cultural consciousness. They have become pop culture figures, famous for their crimes and the violent nature of their acts. People feel compelled to understand more about these dark and twisted crimes, even when they disgust. For audiences everywhere, the very idea that these people can exist and operate in day-to-day life becomes an issue of abject terror and interest. That your neighbor, your boss, or your gas station attendant might be in the midst of a killing spree taps into something primal and very hard to imagine. It reflects the darkest side of the human psyche. "Serial Killer" as a term can be difficult to define. Different criminal investigation units typically require two, three, or more attributable killings over a period of time before an individual can be considered to have joined the ranks of the serial killers. However, it is not really the numbers which can interest so many people and scare others. Instead, it is the often random nature of the killings. Rather than crimes of passion, crimes of financial reward, or instances when an individual has reached their end of their emotional tether, the crimes of serial killers have often been planned days, weeks, or months in advance. Targets can be random, but the killings are often planned in great detail. From cannibalism to mental health concerns, from ritualistic witchcraft to a simple interest in violence, learning what motivates these people can offer both insight and further confusion. The cases presented in this book are extreme cases and display to what extent a serial killer can go...Read the stories of little known serial killers that went beyond the limit of our imagination to perpetrate vile unremorseful murders in the blink of an eye. The book details ten cases more horrifying one from the other:* The isolated loner who butchered women and scattered their remains across Alaska* The killer who hurled huge stones through his victim's heads* Colombia's most violent serial killer* The police investigator who was secretly a serial killer* The woman who murdered hundreds of adopted babies* A month-long killing spree from the former mental health patient* The letter-writing cannibal of old New York* The killer tried inside an iron cage for the court's protection* A man who earned the trust of tourists and killed them for their money* The man whose hammer and knife created a campaign of terrorGrab your copy today!
