Download or read book Growth Regulation of Cancer 2 written by Marc E. Lippman and published by Wiley-Liss. This book was released on 1989-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference work evaluates the cellular and molecular basis of cancer as a disease of abnormal cell proliferation and discusses novel oncogenes included among the most interesting elements in the pathogenesis of human malignancy. The book examines the expanding role of secreted growth factor activities in malignant progression, featuring a report on fibroblast growth factors, a related family of growth factors that represent products of specific oncogenes. The volume reveals specific evidence for the participation of growth factors in autocrine and paracrine loops that contribute to tumor pathogenesis. It also presents systemic analyses of breast and lung cancers that underscore the complicated control of growth regulation for both normal and malignant cells.

Book Synopsis How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease by : United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General
Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Download or read book Tumor Biology written by Asterios S. Tsiftsoglou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the aim of providing an international forum for the communication of both the basic and clinical aspects of molecular and cellular biology of cancer, a NATO ASl was held in Porto Carras, Halkidiki, Greece, September 1-12, 1995. The principles as well as recent developments in tumor biology were discussed in depth, with emphasis on the regulation of the cell cycle, differentiation, programmed cell death (apoptosis) and genetics of cancer. This book constitutes the proceedings of that meeting. Specifically, the following areas were addressed: (a) enzymes and proteins (cyclins) that control the cell cycle, as well as the role of m as gene in meiosis and transformation; (b) the structural basis for specificity in protein-tyrosine kinase reactions; (c) the differentiation of normal as well as neoplastic cells with respect to molecular mechanism(s) by which chemical agents or growth factors trigger maturation; (d) phenotypic and genetic aspects of apoptosis; (e) the role of growth factors, like IGF-l, FGF, TN, IL-6, etc. , in cell cycle regulation, apoptosis (cell death) and senescence; (f) molecular mechanisms of transcriptional activation of globin genes and stability of mRNAs related to growth proteins and iron metabolism; (g) the cellular and molecular biology of bone marrow hemopoiesis; and (h) neurotrophic factors and the generation of cellular diversity in the central nervous system. It was obvious from the studies presented that neoplastic cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis in many cell types are regulated at several levels.

Book Synopsis Issues in Risk Assessment by : National Research Council
Download or read book Issues in Risk Assessment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific basis, inference assumptions, regulatory uses, and research needs in risk assessment are considered in this two-part volume. The first part, Use of Maximum Tolerated Dose in Animal Bioassays for Carcinogenicity, focuses on whether the maximum tolerated dose should continue to be used in carcinogenesis bioassays. The committee considers several options for modifying current bioassay procedures. The second part, Two-Stage Models of Carcinogenesis, stems from efforts to identify improved means of cancer risk assessment that have resulted in the development of a mathematical dose-response model based on a paradigm for the biologic phenomena thought to be associated with carcinogenesis.
