Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an experiment conducted in artificial streams in which the growth of benthic algae was studied in relation to the phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations in the water. The goal of the study was to determine whether benthic algal biomass in the upper Athabasca River is limited by the availability of phosphorus or nitrogen. The results include the taxonomic, growth, and biomass responses by periphytic algae to phosphate additions of up to 50 micrograms per liter. The report also develops a model describing change in relative peak biomass with phosphorus addition, using data from the Athabasca experiments. Comparisons are made with a similarly derived model using results from experiments on the South Thompson River.

Book excerpt: Presents results of an experiment conducted in artificial streams (flumes) in which the growth of periphyton (algae) was studied in relation to phosphorus concentrations in the water. The goal of the study was to determine whether periphyton growth in the Athabasca River was phosphorus limited and whether the degree of phosphorus limitation varied seasonally. The experimental flumes were located on site, adjacent to the Athabasca River at Hinton. The experiment was designed to test periphyton growth and biomass response to a gradient of phosphorus additions during fall and early spring. Periphyton response was compared for phosphorus additions of zero (control), 1, 10, and 25 micrograms per litre of phosphorus (spring and fall 1994) or zero, 0.1, 0.2, 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 micrograms per litre of phosphorus (fall 1993). Results include relative specific growth rates as indicated by measuring the build-up of chlorophyll a, the level at which growth rate saturation occurred, and phosphorus concentrations required to reach maximum biomass levels.

Countries throughout the world are focusing attention on the implementation of regulatory and monitoring programs. In response, industry has begun to implement a variety of process and treatment technologies designed to minimize or eliminate the potential impacts. Environmental Fate and Effects of Pulp and Paper Mill Effluents explores the most active and critical current research and experimentation from around the world. This comprehensive overview examines the identity and origin of chemicals in pulp mill effluents, environmental fate of chemicals from pulp and paper mills, bioaccumulation of substances from pulp mills to fish and wildlife, field and laboratory studies of biochemical and whole organism responses associated with pulp and paper effluents, integrated monitoring and future research, and policy directions of this rapidly evolving field. Written by prominent scientists from around the world with contributions from industry, government, and academia, this important new book provides a balanced global perspective of the recent scientific findings and the challenges being faced in the immediate future.

Book excerpt: Synthesises results from research and monitoring studies undertaken to characterise nutrient loading from all point and diffuse sources in northern Alberta river basins. Also evaluates the impacts of nutrient loading on river chemistry, assesses the response of riverine biota to nutrient loading from pulp mill and municipal effluents, quantifies nutrient responses of benthic biota, and investigates interactions between nutrients and contaminants in pulp mill effluents on food webs. The findings are used to assess the state of aquatic ecosystem health and to develop scientific and management recommendations for the northern river basins.

Book excerpt: Understanding the effects of nutrients on the aquatic environment will be critical for managing industrial and municipal effluent discharges in northern Alberta rivers. One objective of this study was to identify spatial patterns of nutrient limitation in the Wapiti-Smoky and Athabasca river systems, which receive a diversity of effluent discharges including municipal sewage, agricultural runoff, and effluent from oil sands and pulp mills. Investigators conducted two experiments to accomplish this goal: identification of the interactive effects of both nutrient enrichment and grazing by aquatic insects (herbivory) on algal biomass, using nutrient diffusing substrata (NDS) downstream of the Hinton combined effluent; and using NDS to quantify large-scale patterns in algal biomass and nutrient limitation upstream and downstream of the major effluent and tributary input sources along the three rivers. NDS placed at 33 sites aided in the identification of river reaches having no nutrient limitation and those having some form of nutrient limitation.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stream bioassessment is important for understanding algal-nutrient relationships and the development of scientifically defensible numeric nutrient criteria. However, multiple methods of periphyton data collection are currently used, and little is known about the comparability of resulting datasets. Literature also suggests other factors besides nutrients (i.e. variable grazing, light, and flow) can confound algal-nutrient relationships. A one-year method comparison study and 31-day algal biomass-nutrient manipulative experiment were conducted in the southern Ozarks of Arkansas. The method comparison study was implemented using two common bioassessment procedures (whole-surface and delimiter-reduced periphyton removal) to assess the potential for combining datasets. During the manipulative experiment, cobbles from the Buffalo River Watershed were exposed to a range of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) concentrations during P-only and N + P enrichment periods to evaluate algal biomass responses using recirculating streamside mesocosms. Results of the method comparison study showed no statistical difference between bioassessment procedures for chlorophyll-a (chl-a) and ash-free dry mass (AFDM) (p = 0.123 and p = 0.550, respectively) or any interaction between method and season. Differences in chl-a and AFDM from both methods were detected (p

Conversion of forested land into agriculture land and increasing urbanization in watersheds has been correlated with increased nutrient concentrations in surface water and alteration to the natural flow regime. These modifications can decrease resource availability to benthic organisms by decreasing standing stocks of basal resources and increasing carbon export from the system, or stimulate undesirable algal accrual. Because nutrient enrichment and flow alteration can have deleterious impacts on freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem services, we investigated how nutrient enrichment and flow affect basal resources in mid-sized streams and rivers in the eastern U.S. We investigated changes in basal resource structure and function at multiple scales (a few meters to 100s of kilometers) by using a variety of short term (24 hours) and long-term (up to 2.5 months) experiments. To test the effects of increased nutrient availability on autotrophic and heterotrophic biofilms, we deployed nutrient diffusing substrates into 15 streams in the Little Tennessee River watershed in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. We found that gross primary production was phosphorus limited on epilithic surfaces but that algal biomass was co-limited by nutrients. We also found that the effects of consumers and scour may obscure the effects of nutrients on labile carbon sources. To test the effects of flow alteration on basal resources, we setup a series of experiments to explore how water velocity and herbivory interacted to regulate biomass accrual of the widespread riverine macrophyte Podostemum ceratophyllum. We found that water velocity reduced consumer access to the plant, and that low water velocity conditions facilitate the transfer of stored biomass into the food web. Lastly, we analyzed Podostemum from rivers between Georgia and Maine for nutrient content (C, N, P), metals (Cd, Na, Zn) and isotopically enriched nitrogen (Îþ15N). We found that land use was reflected in the elemental composition of Podostemum, which has implications for nutrient storage and flux, and presents a link by which trace metals from urbanized landscapes can move into food webs at potentially toxic levels. Collectively, these study provide new insight into the various ways in which anthropogenic activity impact basal resource in freshwater ecosystems.
