This book was released on 2006-09-29 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the chemistry, biological properties and healthful benefits of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) continues to grow. The number of peer reviewed publications produced on CLA since the 2003 publication of Advances in Conjugated Linoleic Acid Research, Volume 2, has more than doubled. It is likely that CLA will be used in the future in many more studies related to diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis, and diabetes. This text provides comprehensive coverage of this area of research. Sections include material on biosynthesis and metabolic processes, techniques of determination of individual isomers, diversity of CLA, and effects of CLA isomers in humans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frequently attempts to design experiments utilizing the methodology de scribed in articles in trade journals can be frustrating. Description of procedures, because of space constraints, are not always complete. The present volume attempts to bring together in one reference source many of the techniques which are utilized in the study of the kidney. It provides a thorough compendium of research tools, framed by the critical analysis of the theoretical background of renal physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology discussed in Volume 4A. Some areas previously dealt with are not covered from a methodological point of view since adequate information does exist elsewhere (e.g., methods of whole kidney ATPase isolation). Since drugs acting on the kidney may alter not only functional but anatomical integrity, a chapter on the preparation of tissue for morphological studies has been included. The important developments in analy sis of minute (ultramicro) quantities of tissue and biological fluids, as well as methodological advances in studies of the isolated kidney, are thoroughly covered. It is my hope that investigators, research fellows, and graduate students will benefit from the information contained in this volume and that, together with its companion tome, it will be a ready reference for the renal physiologist, the renal pharmacologist, and the nephrologist. The contributors have provided painstaking descriptions and, when re quired, mathematical analyses of the techniques described herein. I wish to thank all of them for their enthusiasm and the excellence of their contributions.
Book Synopsis The Use of Drugs in Food Animals by : National Research Council
Download or read book The Use of Drugs in Food Animals written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-01-12 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of drugs in food animal production has resulted in benefits throughout the food industry; however, their use has also raised public health safety concerns. The Use of Drugs in Food Animals provides an overview of why and how drugs are used in the major food-producing animal industriesâ€"poultry, dairy, beef, swine, and aquaculture. The volume discusses the prevalence of human pathogens in foods of animal origin. It also addresses the transfer of resistance in animal microbes to human pathogens and the resulting risk of human disease. The committee offers analysis and insight into these areas: Monitoring of drug residues. The book provides a brief overview of how the FDA and USDA monitor drug residues in foods of animal origin and describes quality assurance programs initiated by the poultry, dairy, beef, and swine industries. Antibiotic resistance. The committee reports what is known about this controversial problem and its potential effect on human health. The volume also looks at how drug use may be minimized with new approaches in genetics, nutrition, and animal management.

Book Synopsis The Development of American Pharmacology by : John Parascandola
Download or read book The Development of American Pharmacology written by John Parascandola and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The word pharmacology has been used since the seventeenth century to refer - like the ancient term materia medica - to the general study of drugs, including their origin, composition, physiological effects, therapeutic uses, preparation, and administration. But the modern science of pharmacology did not emerge as a distinct discipline until the nineteenth century, when scientists primarily concerned with investigating the physiological effects of drugs began calling themselves "pharmacologists."" "The Development of American Pharmacology is the first comprehensive history of the emergence of the science of pharmacology as an independent discipline in the United States. Central to the story is John J. Abel (1857-1938), widely regarded as the "father of American pharmacology." A student of the University of Michigan and Johns Hopkins, Abel received his M.D. degree at the University of Strassburg and helped introduce German knowledge of pharmacology to his American colleagues. At the University of Michigan, he was appointed to the first chair of pharmacology in the United States, and as professor of pharmacology at Johns Hopkins for thirty-nine years, he trained many of the leading figures in the discipline." "In addition to offering the first detailed portrait of Abel's education and career, Parascandola treats topics such as the beginnings of experimental pharmacology in the nineteenth century; the spread of American pharmacology from Michigan and Johns Hopkins to other universities; the growth of pharmacology outside the academic setting; and the establishment of a national society of pharmacologists and a specialized journal, the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Development and Formulation of Veterinary Dosage Forms by : Gregory E. Hardee
Download or read book Development and Formulation of Veterinary Dosage Forms written by Gregory E. Hardee and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the United States (U.S.) and the more developed nations of the remainder of the world are blessed with a variety of pharmaceuticals, feed additives, and biological products to treat, prevent, and control animal diseases, there is a healthy desire among persons involved in animal health issues to increase our animal medicine chest. The interest stems from the desire to efficiently produce food that is safe and plentiful and from the desire to have more and better government-approved products available for the prevention and treatment of diseases of dogs, cats, and horses and for an increasing variety of minor animal species. For the animal health industry, increased drug availability means broader markets, increased revenues, and an opportunity to better serve their customers. For the veterinarian, more animal health products means that he or she is better able to treat the usual and the unusual conditions, and to prevent animal disease and suffering. No doubt, we are all winners when new technology and industrial and regulatory initiatives hasten the availability of safe and effective animal health products.

Download or read book Energy Metabolism of Farm Animals written by K. J. McCracken and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Proceedings of the 14th Symposium on Energy Metabolism of Farm Animals, held in Northern Ireland in September 1997, comprises 85 original contributions by leading scientists from over 20 countries around the world. In keeping with previous Symposia in the series, held under the auspices of the European Association for Animal Production, this book contains papers which provide the latest research on the energy metabolism and other aspects of the physiology of a wide variety of farmed animals. Highlights include a comprehensive review of the current state of research on leptins and their potential applications in animal production, and a large section relating to organ and tissue metabolism, with major contributions from the USA, UK, France, Germany and Denmark. An important strength of the book is the diversity of species covered. For example, the sections on modelling and feed evaluation relate to pigs, sows, broiler chickens, laying hens, turkeys, lambs, beef and dairy cattle and fish. There are also substantial contributions on lactation and reproduction, growth, environmental aspects and maintenance. This book is essential reading for research workers in animal science, particularly those concerned with nutrition and feed evaluation.
