Why center on growth? It prevents unhealthy centers from developing, i.e. child-centered, fear-centered, performance-centered, activity-centered, work-centered, education-centered, etc. Family life is incredibly dynamic and it takes a lot of wisdom and strength to successfully navigate marriage, parenting, life after kids, and grand-parenting. Being growth-centered doesn't leave this highest priority up to chance. What is it? It's a family that prioritizes the personal development of every member, not only of the children but primarily the parents. This center fosters healthy leadership. How do we cultivate this kind of organizing principle? Improve clarity and management of emotions and default beliefs and values. Then create a new way of doing life and family to achieve more of what helps every member thrive."

Unfortunately, the things we make central to our family (consciously or unconsciously)-often get in the way of what matters most in life. Why center our family on the value of growth? Focusing on growth prevents unhealthy centers from developing, such as child-centered, fear-centered, performance-centered, activity-centered, work-centered, education-centered, etc. Family life is incredibly dynamic, and it takes a lot of wisdom and strength to successfully navigate marriage, parenting, life after kids, and grand-parenting. Being growth-centered doesn't leave this highest priority up to chance. What is the growth-centered family? It's a family that prioritizes the personal development of every member, not only of the children but primarily the parents. Centering on growth fosters healthy leadership in all members of the family. To cultivate this kind of organizing principle, we have to improve the clarity and management of our emotions as well as our default beliefs and values. In that way, we can create a new way of living life and leading family that allows us to achieve more of what helps every family member thrive.

Book excerpt: A master class in family therapy--now updated with an additional ten years' case experience Few people have had as profound an impact on the theory and practice of family therapy as Salvador Minuchin. As one commentator put it, "Memories of his classic sessions have become the standard against which therapists judge their own best work." This new edition of the classic, Mastering Family Therapy, offers beginners and experienced practitioners alike the opportunity to learn the art and science of family therapy under this pioneering clinician and teacher. In elegant clinical interplays, Minuchin, his colleagues Wai-Yung Lee and George Simon, and eight advanced students provide answers to such critical questions as: * What does it take to master the art of family therapy? * How do I create an effective personal style? * How can I become an instrument for growth for troubled families? This updated Second Edition features: * An overview and critique of new models of treatment in the field, especially evidence-based models of family treatment * New case material highlighting the impact of societal context on families * Minuchin's conceptualization of a four-step process of family assessment, including how history can impact current family functioning A new and thoroughly revised version of the classic text, Mastering Family Therapy, Second Edition is essential reading for all those who practice, study, or teach family therapy.

Book excerpt: A Powerful Approach to Bringing God's Grace to Kids Did you know that the way we deal (or don't deal) with our kids' misbehavior shapes their beliefs about themselves, the world, and God? Therefore it's vital to connect with their hearts--not just their minds--amid the daily behavior battles. With warmth and grace, Jim and Lynne Jackson, founders of Connected Families, offer four tried-and-true keys to handling any behavioral issues with love, truth, and authority. You will learn practical ways to communicate messages of grace and truth, how to discipline in a way that motivates your child, and how to keep your relationship strong, not antagonistic. Discipline is more than just a short-term attempt to modify your child's actions--it's a long-term investment to help them build faith, wisdom, and character for life. When you discover a better path to discipline, you'll find a more well-behaved--and well-believed--kid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family Development in Three Generations is an unusual kind of multi-generational gathering--the result of a massive, in-depth research effort. It is based upon Hill's personal interviews conducted with over 300 families during the course of a year. The discussion results from these interviews, from the statistical information that they produced, and from Hill's consultation with five other fellow researchers. This scholarly contribution to the family field thoroughly analyzes the complexities of the modified generational network. As a multi-generational study, it is pervaded by the vigorous spirit that usually characterizes such research. In his preface to Family Development in Three Generations Reuben Hill invites the reader "to drop in on any generational gathering" where "you will hear how much better or worse life was in grandfather's day than today." Such discussions are usually controversial and center upon shared experiences. Such rhetoric, polemic, and energy sustain conversations among generations. Family Development in Three Generations penetrates to the life center of intimate change in American society. It is a wide-ranging volume that presents varied and highly significant insights into many fields. Scholars will find it a vital contribution to their knowledge of the subject and laymen will find it full of valuable information that they can profitably apply to their own families. The work is widely recognized as a classic in longitudinal analysis of family life.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.
