Book excerpt: In the present study chemical bath deposition parameters are near optimized for high efficiency CIGS2 Solar cells. Effect of various chemical bath deposition parameters on device performance was studied and attempts were made to optimize the deposition parameters in order to improve the device performance.In/(In+Ga) ratio in absorber layer is varied to obtain good lattice match and optimum band alignment. Solar cells with conversion efficiencies comparable to conventional CdS/CIGS2 has been obtained with Zn[subscript x]Cd[subscript 1-x]S/CIGS2. High short current as well as higher open circuit voltages were obtained with Zn[subscript x]Cd[subscript 1-x]S as alternative heterojunction partner for CIGS2 solar cells as compared to SLG/Mo/CIGS2/ CdS / i-ZnO/ZnO:Al.

It has great potential application thanks to its physicochemical properties. It is used extensively in optoelectronic, photocatalytic and gas detection applications. In particular, it is used for photovoltaic applications. In this work, the effect of doping by transition metals (manganese, cobalt and copper) on the structural, microstructural, morphological, optical, electrical and magnetic properties of zinc sulfide thin films prepared by chemical bath deposition (CBD) technique are studied by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometry, Hall effect and SQUID. The modeling and optimization of higher efficiency Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells are also investigated in this thesis for various layers thickness by using Silvaco ATLAS.

Book excerpt: The effect of thermal treatments on sputter deposited AZO and HAZO films are determined by way of rapid thermal annealing. High temperature annealing of ZnO is found to improve film characteristics. The gas ambient used in the thermal treatment process is found to be a critical parameter in post-anneal film quality. Gas ambients of nitrogen, argon, and forming gas, a nitrogen and hydrogen mixture, were employed in the thermal treatment studies. In general, optical transmission and resistivity improve for all films under each ambient, although films annealed in forming gas show the most improvement, with resulting figure of merit values two to three times their as deposited values.

Book excerpt: Recently, a significant effort has been devoted to the investigation of ZnO as a suitable semiconductor for UV light-emitting diodes, lasers, and detectors and hetero-substrates for GaN. Research is driven not only by the technological requirements of state-of-the-art applications but also by the lack of a fundamental understanding of growth processes, the role of intrinsic defects and dopants, and the properties of hydrogen. The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on “Zinc oxide as a material for micro- and optoelectronic applications”, held from June 23 to June 25 2004 in St. Petersburg, Russia, was organized accordingly and started with the growth of ZnO. A variety of growth methods for bulk and layer growth were discussed. These techniques comprised growth methods such as closed space vapor transport (CSVT), metal-organic chemical vapor deposition, reactive ion sputtering, and pulsed laser deposition. From a structural point of view using these growth techniques ZnO can be fabricated ranging from single crystalline bulk material to polycrystalline ZnO and nanowhiskers. A major aspect of the ZnO growth is doping. n-type doping is relatively easy to accomplish with elements such al Al or Ga. At room temperature single crystal ZnO exhibits a resistivity of about 0. 3 -cm, an electron mobility of 2 17 -3 225 cm /Vs, and a carrier concentration of 10 cm . In n-type ZnO two shallow donors are observable with activation energies of 30 – 40 meV and 60 – 70 meV.

Book excerpt: Post heat treatment in argon ambient helped reduce resistivity of CBD-ZnO undoped films to ~ 10−1[omega]-cm. In-situ doping of such films using Al shows promising results. Such films could be an alternative to indium tin oxide (ITO) layers that are commonly used as TCO layers for solar cells. Another approach is to use CBD to grow CdO and SnO2 thin films, with the goal of obtaining Cd2SnO4 by later annealing of these two layers. Cadmium stannate is another TCO candidate that could replace ITO in the near future. We have succeeded in growing CBD-CdO thin films using three different complexing agents. Undoped CBD-CdO films with a resistivity as low as 1.01 x10−2[omega]-cm and a carrier density as high as 2.59 x 1020 cm−3 have been obtained. SnO2 films have been successfully grown using CBD. Fabrication of Cadmium stannate thin films using CBD is investigated. In summary, our objective to expand the use of CBD beyond just growing CdS and ZnS, and to test the possibility of using it for in-situ doping of group II-VI semiconductors as well as TCO layers fabrication proved to be successful. We believe that this may have a significant impact on solar cells as well as other optoelectronic devices fabrication industry, due to the simplicity and the cost-effectiveness of CBD.
