Book Synopsis Ground-water Sensitivity and Vulnerability to Pesticides, Central Virgin River Basin, Washington and Iron Counties, Utah by : Mike Lowe
Download or read book Ground-water Sensitivity and Vulnerability to Pesticides, Central Virgin River Basin, Washington and Iron Counties, Utah written by Mike Lowe and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2006-09 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recommended that states develop Pesticide Management Plans for four agricultural chemicals - alachlor, atrazine, metolachlor, and simazine - used in Utah as herbicides in the production of corn and sorghum, and to control weeds and undesired vegetation (such as along right-of-ways or utility substations). This report and accompanying maps are intended to be used as part of these Pesticide Management Plans to provide local, state, and federal government agencies and agricultural pesticide users with a base of information concerning sensitivity and vulnerability of ground water in the basin-fill aquifer (bedrock is not evaluated) to agricultural pesticides in the central Virgin River basin, Washington and Iron Counties, Utah. We used existing data to produce pesticide sensitivity and vulnerability maps by applying an attribute ranking system specifically tailored to the western United States using Geographic Information System analysis methods. 24 pages + 2 plates
Book Synopsis Regional groundwater flow and water quality in the Virgin River Basin and surrounding areas, Utah and Arizona by : Paul Inkenbrandt
Download or read book Regional groundwater flow and water quality in the Virgin River Basin and surrounding areas, Utah and Arizona written by Paul Inkenbrandt and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 46-page report, we characterized the deep aquifer system and its connections to the overlying aquifers in the area of the Hurricane fault in Washington County by examining well logs, creating regional potentiometric-surface maps, compiling groundwater quality data, conducting gravity surveys, examining remote sensing data for surface lineaments, and determining areas for potential monitoring wells. Results of the study were: (1) R and C aquifer groundwater depths are > 500 feet in the I-15 corridor area, (2) a groundwater divide likely exists south of the Utah-Arizona state line, (3) groundwater flow follows open fracture systems, (4) fracture conductivity is highest near the fault, (5) dissolution of evaporites increase groundwater TDS, and (6) a well should be drilled into the Hurricane fault near Pintura.

Book Synopsis Investigation of Hydrogeologic Mapping to Delineate Protection Zones Around Springs by : Mark E. Jensen
Download or read book Investigation of Hydrogeologic Mapping to Delineate Protection Zones Around Springs written by Mark E. Jensen and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods commonly used to delineate protection zones for water-supply wells are often not directly applicable for springs. This investigation focuses on the use of hydrogeologic mapping methods to identify physical and hydrologic features that control ground-water flow to springs to aid in delineating springhead protection zones. Two public-supply springs were selected as study sites to represent diversegeologic settings. One spring discharges from fractured dolomite and one from fractures siltstone, sandstone, and shale. Hydrogeologic mapping techniques, as applied in this study, are methods for mapping geologic or hydrologic features or geophysical/geochemical signatures of subsurface features. These data are often supplemented with information from subsurface investigations to aid in extrapolating surface results to aquifer depths. In this investigation, geologic mapping, fracture-trace analysis, topographic analysis, catchment area estimation, geochemical characterization, elemental isotope studies, and a tracer study were used to locate and describe potential ground-water flow boundaries and pathways and develop conceptual models for site hydrogeology. Results were integrated to estimate the zones of contribution to each spring and evaluated for use in the delineation of potential protection zones. Data from borings and hydraulic tests supported this characterization by providing direct and indirect information regarding susurface lithology and hydraulic parameters. In these case studies, results of hydrogeologic mapping allowed development of the conceptual model for site hydrology and evaluation of potential ground-water flow controls. Although definitive ground-water flow boundaries suitable for delineation of practicable protection zones could not be identified at either site, these techniques provided sufficient information to support an initial evaluation of potential protection zones. These results would also serve as a strong basis for additional investigations if more detailed or reliable delineations were warrented.
