Book excerpt: A study has been made to determine the basic phenomena associated with the ground interference effects for VTOL aircraft in an attempt to arrive at some generalized conclusions regarding the effect of the ground on the various types of VTOL aircraft. The results showed that helicopter and other rotor aircraft generally experience favorable ground effect. In the case of propeller VTOL aircraft the tilt-wing configurations will usually experience a small favorable ground effect. For the deflected-slipstream configurations a large detrimental ground effect is experienced at low angles of the thrust axis but little or no ground effect is experienced at angles of 25 degrees or 30 degrees. For buried-fan and jet configurations the ground effect can be favorable or unfavorable depending upon the geometry of the fans or jets and the airframe. For single-jet configurations the ground effects are detrimental and cannot be eliminated by fixes on the airplane. For these cases, a perforated landing platform appears to offer promise as a means of minimizing the adverse ground effect. Ground effects experienced in hovering flight tend to decrease with increasing forward speed and are rather small at airspeeds that might be of interest for STOL operation of the various VTOL configurations. The qualitative predictions of the ground effect for various VTOL aircraft configurations can be made with a fair degree of confidence, but it appears at the present time that the magnitude of the effect for specific configurations will usually have to be obtained from test data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GROUNDS FOR GROUNDING The first book to cover grounding from the circuit to system and across the entire spectrum of applications Grounds for Grounding provides a complete and thorough approach to the subject of designing electrical and electronic circuits and systems, blending theory and practice to demonstrate how a few basic rules can be applied across a broad range of applications. The authors begin with the basic concepts of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) that are essential for understanding grounding theory and its applications, such as “ground loop,” which is one of the most misunderstood concepts in EMC. Next, they provide an introduction to grounding, including safety grounding, grounding for control of electromagnetic interference, and grounding-related case studies. Subsequent chapter coverage includes: Fundamentals of grounding design Bonding principles Grounding for power distribution and lightning protection systems Grounding in wiring circuits and cable shields Grounding of EMI terminal protection devices Grounding on printed circuit boards Integrated facility and platform grounding system Practical case studies are integrated throughout the book to aid in readers’ comprehension and each chapter concludes with a useful bibliography. Grounds for Grounding is an indispensable resource for electrical and electronic engineers who work with the design of circuits, systems, and facilities.

Book excerpt: A small scale ground effect test rig was used to study the ground plane flow field generated by a STOVL aircraft in hover. The objective of the research was to support NASA-Ames Research Center planning for the Large Scale Powered Model (LSPM) test for the ARPA-sponsored ASTOVL program. Specifically, small scale oil flow visualization studies were conducted to make a relative assessment of the aerodynamic interference of a proposed strut configuration and a wall configuration on the ground plane stagnation line. A simplified flat plate model representative of a generic jet-powered STOVL aircraft was used to simulate the LSPM. Cold air jets were used to simulate both the lift fan and the twin rear engines. Nozzle Pressure Ratios were used that closely represented those used on the LSPM tests. The flow visualization data clearly identified a shift in the stagnation line location for both the strut and the wall configuration. Considering the experimental uncertainty, it was concluded that either the strut configuration or the wall configuration caused only a minor aerodynamic interference. Distribution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicopters are highly capable and useful rotating-wing aircraft with roles that encompass a variety of civilian and military applications. Their usefulness lies in their unique ability to take off and land vertically, to hover stationary relative to the ground, and to fly forward, backward, or sideways. These unique flying qualities, however, come at a high cost including complex aerodynamic problems, significant vibrations, high levels of noise, and relatively large power requirements compared to fixed-wing aircraft. This book, written by an internationally recognized expert, provides a thorough, modern treatment of the aerodynamic principles of helicopters and other rotating-wing vertical lift aircraft. Every chapter is extensively illustrated and concludes with a bibliography and homework problems. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students, practising engineers, and researchers will welcome this thorough and up-to-date text on rotating-wing aerodynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Predicting Outdoor Sound is an up-to-date reference on the propagation of sound close to the ground and its prediction. New content includes comparisons between predictions and data for road traffic, railway and wind turbine noise; descriptions of source characteristics in the HARMONOISE model; propagation over rough seas, parallel low walls, and lattices; outlines of numerical methods; gabion (caged stones) and sonic crystal noise barriers; meteorological effects on noise barrier performance; and the prediction requirements for auralization. The book brings together relevant theories, prediction schemes, and data, thereby providing a basis for determining what model or scheme might be applicable for any situation. It also offers a background on useful analytical approximations and the restrictions, as well as difficulties and limitations associated with engineering prediction schemes. The text should be of considerable interest to researchers in outdoor sound propagation and, more generally, it should provide a comprehensive primer on the topic for lecturers, consultants and students in acoustics and noise control.
