This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, the old notion of causal boundary for a spacetime V has been redefined consistently. The computation of this boundary ∂V on any standard conformally stationary spacetime V=R×M, suggests a natural compactification MB associated to any Riemannian metric on M or, more generally, to any Finslerian one. The corresponding boundary ∂BM is constructed in terms of Busemann-type functions. Roughly, ∂BM represents the set of all the directions in M including both, asymptotic and "finite" (or "incomplete") directions. This Busemann boundary ∂BM is related to two classical boundaries: the Cauchy boundary ∂CM and the Gromov boundary ∂GM. The authors' aims are: (1) to study the subtleties of both, the Cauchy boundary for any generalized (possibly non-symmetric) distance and the Gromov compactification for any (possibly incomplete) Finsler manifold, (2) to introduce the new Busemann compactification MB, relating it with the previous two completions, and (3) to give a full description of the causal boundary ∂V of any standard conformally stationary spacetime. Book Synopsis Quantum Field Theory and Gravity by : Felix Finster
Download or read book Quantum Field Theory and Gravity written by Felix Finster and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most challenging problems of contemporary theoretical physics is the mathematically rigorous construction of a theory which describes gravitation and the other fundamental physical interactions within a common framework. The physical ideas which grew from attempts to develop such a theory require highly advanced mathematical methods and radically new physical concepts. This book presents different approaches to a rigorous unified description of quantum fields and gravity. It contains a carefully selected cross-section of lively discussions which took place in autumn 2010 at the fifth conference "Quantum field theory and gravity - Conceptual and mathematical advances in the search for a unified framework" in Regensburg, Germany. In the tradition of the other proceedings covering this series of conferences, a special feature of this book is the exposition of a wide variety of approaches, with the intention to facilitate a comparison. The book is mainly addressed to mathematicians and physicists who are interested in fundamental questions of mathematical physics. It allows the reader to obtain a broad and up-to-date overview of a fascinating active research area.

Book Synopsis Nonlinear Stability of Ekman Boundary Layers in Rotating Stratified Fluids by : Hajime Koba

This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stationary solution of the rotating Navier-Stokes equations with a boundary condition is called an Ekman boundary layer. This book constructs stationary solutions of the rotating Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq equations with stratification effects in the case when the rotating axis is not necessarily perpendicular to the horizon. The author calls such stationary solutions Ekman layers. This book shows the existence of a weak solution to an Ekman perturbed system, which satisfies the strong energy inequality. Moreover, the author discusses the uniqueness of weak solutions and computes the decay rate of weak solutions with respect to time under some assumptions on the Ekman layers and the physical parameters. The author also shows that there exists a unique global-in-time strong solution of the perturbed system when the initial datum is sufficiently small. Comparing a weak solution satisfying the strong energy inequality with the strong solution implies that the weak solution is smooth with respect to time when time is sufficiently large.
Book Synopsis Lorentzian Geometry and Related Topics by : María A. Cañadas-Pinedo
Download or read book Lorentzian Geometry and Related Topics written by María A. Cañadas-Pinedo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a collection of research papers and useful surveys by experts in the field which provide a representative picture of the current status of this fascinating area. Based on contributions from the VIII International Meeting on Lorentzian Geometry, held at the University of Málaga, Spain, this volume covers topics such as distinguished (maximal, trapped, null, spacelike, constant mean curvature, umbilical...) submanifolds, causal completion of spacetimes, stationary regions and horizons in spacetimes, solitons in semi-Riemannian manifolds, relation between Lorentzian and Finslerian geometries and the oscillator spacetime. In the last decades Lorentzian geometry has experienced a significant impulse, which has transformed it from just a mathematical tool for general relativity to a consolidated branch of differential geometry, interesting in and of itself. Nowadays, this field provides a framework where many different mathematical techniques arise with applications to multiple parts of mathematics and physics. This book is addressed to differential geometers, mathematical physicists and relativists, and graduate students interested in the field.

Book Synopsis Recent Trends in Lorentzian Geometry by : Miguel Sánchez
Download or read book Recent Trends in Lorentzian Geometry written by Miguel Sánchez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, Lorentzian geometry has been used as a necessary tool to understand general relativity, as well as to explore new genuine geometric behaviors, far from classical Riemannian techniques. Recent progress has attracted a renewed interest in this theory for many researchers: long-standing global open problems have been solved, outstanding Lorentzian spaces and groups have been classified, new applications to mathematical relativity and high energy physics have been found, and further connections with other geometries have been developed. Samples of these fresh trends are presented in this volume, based on contributions from the VI International Meeting on Lorentzian Geometry, held at the University of Granada, Spain, in September, 2011. Topics such as geodesics, maximal, trapped and constant mean curvature submanifolds, classifications of manifolds with relevant symmetries, relations between Lorentzian and Finslerian geometries, and applications to mathematical physics are included. This book will be suitable for a broad audience of differential geometers, mathematical physicists and relativists, and researchers in the field.

Using Furusawa's integral representation for combined with a pullback formula involving the unitary group , the authors prove that the -functions are "nice". The converse theorem of Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro then implies that such representations have a functorial lifting to a cuspidal representation of . Combined with the exterior-square lifting of Kim, this also leads to a functorial lifting of to a cuspidal representation of . As an application, the authors obtain analytic properties of various -functions related to full level Siegel cusp forms. They also obtain special value results for and
Book Synopsis Polynomial Approximation on Polytopes by : Vilmos Totik
Download or read book Polynomial Approximation on Polytopes written by Vilmos Totik and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polynomial approximation on convex polytopes in is considered in uniform and -norms. For an appropriate modulus of smoothness matching direct and converse estimates are proven. In the -case so called strong direct and converse results are also verified. The equivalence of the moduli of smoothness with an appropriate -functional follows as a consequence. The results solve a problem that was left open since the mid 1980s when some of the present findings were established for special, so-called simple polytopes.
Book Synopsis The Grothendieck Inequality Revisited by : Ron Blei
Download or read book The Grothendieck Inequality Revisited written by Ron Blei and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical Grothendieck inequality is viewed as a statement about representations of functions of two variables over discrete domains by integrals of two-fold products of functions of one variable. An analogous statement is proved, concerning continuous functions of two variables over general topological domains. The main result is the construction of a continuous map $\Phi$ from $l^2(A)$ into $L^2(\Omega_A, \mathbb{P}_A)$, where $A$ is a set, $\Omega_A = \{-1,1\}^A$, and $\mathbb{P}_A$ is the uniform probability measure on $\Omega_A$.
Book Synopsis A Homology Theory for Smale Spaces by : Ian F. Putnam
Download or read book A Homology Theory for Smale Spaces written by Ian F. Putnam and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author develops a homology theory for Smale spaces, which include the basics sets for an Axiom A diffeomorphism. It is based on two ingredients. The first is an improved version of Bowen's result that every such system is the image of a shift of finite type under a finite-to-one factor map. The second is Krieger's dimension group invariant for shifts of finite type. He proves a Lefschetz formula which relates the number of periodic points of the system for a given period to trace data from the action of the dynamics on the homology groups. The existence of such a theory was proposed by Bowen in the 1970s.
Book Synopsis The Optimal Version of Hua's Fundamental Theorem of Geometry of Rectangular Matrices by : Peter Šemrl
Download or read book The Optimal Version of Hua's Fundamental Theorem of Geometry of Rectangular Matrices written by Peter Šemrl and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hua's fundamental theorem of geometry of matrices describes the general form of bijective maps on the space of all m\times n matrices over a division ring \mathbb{D} which preserve adjacency in both directions. Motivated by several applications the author studies a long standing open problem of possible improvements. There are three natural questions. Can we replace the assumption of preserving adjacency in both directions by the weaker assumption of preserving adjacency in one direction only and still get the same conclusion? Can we relax the bijectivity assumption? Can we obtain an analogous result for maps acting between the spaces of rectangular matrices of different sizes? A division ring is said to be EAS if it is not isomorphic to any proper subring. For matrices over EAS division rings the author solves all three problems simultaneously, thus obtaining the optimal version of Hua's theorem. In the case of general division rings he gets such an optimal result only for square matrices and gives examples showing that it cannot be extended to the non-square case.

This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors study the complex geometry and coherent cohomology of nonclassical Mumford-Tate domains and their quotients by discrete groups. Their focus throughout is on the domains which occur as open -orbits in the flag varieties for and , regarded as classifying spaces for Hodge structures of weight three. In the context provided by these basic examples, the authors formulate and illustrate the general method by which correspondence spaces give rise to Penrose transforms between the cohomologies of distinct such orbits with coefficients in homogeneous line bundles.
