Book excerpt: Provocatively explaining the political and social phenomenon of white supremacy as a religion and providing a theology of redemption for disparaged communities affected by it, this book is a collection of personal and academic essays that challenge popular notions of American exceptionalism. A little bit of everything, a mixtape in the tradition of DJ Clue, episodic and rhapsodic, lifting a panoply of voices in an unexpected way, it wrestles with theology and philosophy alike, blending poetry with narrative nonfiction and memoir. It is a creation of a new and expressive literary experience that is as tragic and triumphant as the Black experience is in America--a groaning that cannot be uttered.

Book excerpt: This book is about a Black man's experience of reading Mark Twain's classic Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for the first time while in graduate school. The story captures the author's emotional struggle with Twain's use of the racial epithet more than two hundred times in the text. Author James Henry Harris reports being relieved to come to the end of the semester of "encountering Twain's use of [the forbidden word] every week. . . . I was teetering on the brink of falling apart. . . . For the first time the class seemed to understand my painful struggle, and my plight as a Black man in class was a metaphor, a symbol of the past, present, and postmodern condition of American society." This is a courageous memoir that wrestles with the historic stain of racism and the ongoing impact of racist language in postmodern society. The book is about Harris's flashbacks, conversations, and dilemmas spawned by use of the epithet in a classroom setting where the author was the only Black person. His diary-like reflections reveal his skill as a keen reader of culture and literature. In these pages, Harris challenges his instructor and classmates and inspires readers to redress the long history of American racism and white supremacy bound up with the N-word. He reflects on how current Black artists and others use the word in a different way with the intention of empowering or claiming the term. But Harris is not convinced that even this usage does not further feed the word's racist roots. Healing racial division begins with understanding the deep impact our words can have to tear down or to heal. This book invites the reader into this important conversation.

Stressed by bullying new management, Jess finds comfort with Jackson, a sexy neighbor and friend of several years, who reveals himself to like men and women, and invites Jess on an all-expenses paid trip to a tropical island. There Jess meets Jackson's "crew", seven sexy studs who have no inhibitions but who all find sanctuary on the island from their tragic pasts. Max, Marcus, Dean, Louis, Raphael, Michael, and Caleb are more than happy to help Jess lose her own inhibitions, and she finds herself falling not only for Jackson, but each of the crew as well. Jess is invited to help set up and manage a Foundation whose aim is to heal people suffering mental trauma as a result of violence. The choice to stay with her studs is easy. Lost Inhibitions: The Next Chapter - The tropical refuge of El Santuario is up and running, helping victims of violence to heal. But the outside world encroaches. Jess and her eight sexy studs’ idyllic island attracts the attention of a psychotic stalker who comes after Marcus. A ruthless gang of poachers want to plunder the island’s fragile bounty and Jess, Jackson, Marcus, Max, Caleb, Michael, Dean, Louis, and Raphael have to fight off the threats to El Santuario. It’s not all bad. Jess has her hands full as she continues to bond and fall further in love with her crew of hunky bi-sexual men. Then the crew dynamic changes. Raphael, uncomfortable in a long term ménage-style relationship finds love with a sexy ex-Navy SEAL named Riley and enters into a monogamous partnership. Jess and her crew are happy that Raphael has found his true love. Sex, studs and stalkers. Not an ideal combination, but Jess will fight for what’s hers and defend her men from danger.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few years have seen the emergence of a growing, widespread desire in this country, and indeed everywhere, that positive actions be taken to restore the quality of our environment, and to protect it from the degrading effects of all forms of pollution-air, noise, solid waste, and water. Since pollution is a direct or" indirect consequence of waste, if there is no waste, there can be no pollution, and the seemingly idealistic demand for" zero discharge" can be construed as a demand for zero waste. However, as long as there is waste, we can only attempt to abate the consequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. In those instances in which a particular type of pollution has been recognized, three major questions usually arise: 1, How serious is the pollution? 2, Is the technology to abate it available? and 3, Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? The principal intention of this series of books is to help the reader to formulate answers to the last two of the above three questions. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to specific pollution problems has been a major factor contributing to the success of environmental engineering, and in large measure has accounted for the establishing of a "methodology of pollution control.

Book excerpt: [Siren Everlasting Classic ManLove: Erotic Romance, Alternative, Fantasy, Paranormal, Shape-shifter, MM, HEA] Immortal Knight - Alistair is an immortal knight charged with protecting humanity and shifters from the dark forces that plague them. Dangerous and deadly, Alistair has spent hundreds of years with his back turned on his duty after the brutal murder of his mate, and he wants nothing more than to be left alone. When his brothers discover what they believe to be a dark witch roaming the woods near their home, Alistair is furious. The witches killed his mate, and he hasn't had a kill in a long time. One look into Kevin's mismatched eyes and Alistair is floored. He immediately rushes into protective mode, protecting his mate from his brothers, who want Kevin dead. Kevin is Alistair's mate, reincarnated after being murdered by their enemy. It sounds outlandish, but when Alistair kisses him, Kevin can't resist. He wants to be taken by this man, wants to be dominated by him—even when horrifying memories from the past start to return. Protective Knight - Alistair, a walking fantasy, is dangerous, deadly, and willing to kill all evil with a flick of his sword. He practically walked out of a romance novel. This isn't fantasy, it's real life, and Kevin is pregnant with Alistair's child when evil rushes to the front door to attack. They know Kevin is alive, and they want him dead. Murdered in a past life by this same evil force, Kevin doesn't want a repeat, and luckily Alistair won't let anyone get between him and his mate. Alistair will do anything to protect his lover. Kevin died in their previous life, but Kevin is back, and he may hold the key to everything Alistair and his brothers lost, which is why a sworn enemy wants his mate kidnapped and killed. Alistair hasn't wielded his sword in a long time, but for his mate and unborn child, taking up the blade and being the protector he used to be comes all too easy. Marcy Jacks is a Siren-exclusive author.

Book excerpt: Two of the most acclaimed reference works in the area of acoustics in recent years have been our Encyclopedia of Acoustics, 4 Volume set and the Handbook of Acoustics spin-off. These works, edited by Malcolm Crocker, positioned Wiley as a major player in the acoustics reference market. With our recently published revision of Beranek & Ver's Noise and Vibration Control Engineering, Wiley is a highly respected name in the acoustics business. Crocker's new handbook covers an area of great importance to engineers and designers. Noise and vibration control is one largest areas of application of the acoustics topics covered in the successful encyclopedia and handbook. It is also an area that has been under-published in recent years. Crocker has positioned this reference to cover the gamut of topics while focusing more on the applications to industrial needs. In this way the book will become the best single source of need-to-know information for the professional markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentials for practice of medicine in the frontline is an abridged synthesis of selected topics from family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, pathology, and psychiatry; also, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, hematology, and dermatology. Each section covers ten salient and commonly-encountered areas of practice by physicians. Multiple-choice questions and answers accompany each Section. The setting of writing is a developing country. The contents are relevant to doctors who practice in the medically advanced countries and those in the developing countries. Medically, the world has become an interesting place. Air travel, frequent movement, and resettlement of people now mean that doctors in developed countries can no longer stay and practice within the clinical conditions that were typical in their practice settings. Things have changed, as they cannot be certain of what medical conditions that patients from various parts of the world will present to them. Doctors also cannot be unequivocal that an emergency in a distant part of the globe may not require their attention. This book therefore meets the needs of doctors, irrespective of their length of practice or where they practice. What applies to doctors certainly applies to medical students. This book is an atypical book as it puts in its two volumes of less than 500 pages of 8.5”x 11” per volume material that any doctor, anywhere, should keep on their office or consulting room bookshelf. The e-book version is also a veritable companion.
