Book Synopsis The Inspiration Motif in the Works of Franz Grillparzer by : Gisela Stein

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franz Grillparzer was not a man of extravagance either in phrase or conduct. His life as an individual and artist is marked by a reticence, an aversion to the unveiling of the inner SOul,1 that is perhaps best matched by the concise style and expression of his works. This art of effective restraint is particularly visible in the dramas where often a single word or indeed an utter silence carries the greatest emotional impact. There is an absolute lack of sound and fury signifying nothing; even in the frenzy of inspiration 2 Grillparzer carefully chooses words that best convey his thoughts and for purely emotional release he turns to another medium which he sharply distinguished from poetry: to music. If this poet then who knows no empty phrases applies terms like 'betrothed of the gods',3 'mother of all greatness',4 'mighty 5 lever of the universe', 'messenger of divine happiness'6 to one and the same concept at different times, we may assume that he here expresses something deeply anchored in his being. And indeed, the motif of concentration ('Sammlung') and inspiration ('Begeisterung') is one that we meet again and again in the poetry, the diaries and the dramas. This emotional state is at all times highly revered and greatly sought by the poet - it is, in fact, made a condition of creative productivity and, as the years pass, finally develops into a condition of life itself in the prophecy of 'Libussa'.

Book Synopsis The Biedermeier and Beyond by : Ian Frank Roe
Download or read book The Biedermeier and Beyond written by Ian Frank Roe and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together fifteen essays by scholars which were first presented at a conference held in Oxford in September 1997 to mark the bicentenary of Schubert's birth. This collection of essays examines a variety of aspects of cultural and social life in Austria in the first half of the nineteenth century but also explores the perpetuating of myths and stereotypes derived from those years and the ways in which the Biedermeier period continued to influence later generations, not least in their repeated attempts to create an image of the good old days based on the age of Schubert before the chaos of the 1848 revolution and the construction of the RingstraBe. Major figures from literature and culture are well represented (Grillparzer, Nestroy, Stifter, Bauernfeld) but an important focus of the volume is on lesser known writers who were responsible for the creation of the Biedermeier myth: Frankl, Bartsch, Lux and others. A further group of essays is concerned with general topics such as Austrian identity, the existence of a specifically Austrian strand of philosophy, and changing attitudes towards nature.
Book Synopsis The Plays of Grillparzer by : George A. Wells
Download or read book The Plays of Grillparzer written by George A. Wells and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Plays of Grillparzer presents a compilation of the works of Franz Grillparzer, a famous Austrian dramatist, with emphasis on the significant features of his dramatic technique. This book presents some generalizations about what characterizes his tragedies and makes them effective. Comprised of five chapters, this book starts with an overview of Grillparzer's two plays for the popular stage, namely, Die Ahnfrau (1897) and Der Traum ein Leben (1834). This text then reviews the characteristics of Grillparzer's Greek tragedies wherein he prefers direct action to narrative. Other chapters examine the classic spirit of his second poetic drama, Sappho, which is characterized as halfway between a tragedy of fate and a tragedy of character. The final chapter examines the characterization in Grillparzer's third play, Libussa, wherein he uses an unusual extent to explain a situation, or the speaker's plans and emotions. This book is a valuable resource for readers who are interested in Franz Grillparzer's works.

Book Synopsis The Austrian Dimension in German Intellectual History by : David S. Luft
Download or read book The Austrian Dimension in German Intellectual History written by David S. Luft and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing Austrian intellectual life from Maria Theresa to Hitler's annexation of Austria and Czechoslovakia, this innovative book offers a precise and engaging account of Austrian intellectual history since the Enlightenment. Here, David S. Luft begins by locating his narrative in the region known as Cisleithanian Austria, the area to the west of the Leitha River that was the basis for the modern Austrian state after 1740. Chapter 2 provides a history of the German-speaking intellectual life of these central lands of the Habsburg Monarchy (Austria and Bohemia) from the Enlightenment to annexation by Nazi Germany. Chapters 3 to 5 identify the most important philosophers, writers, and social thinkers who contributed to Austrian intellectual life in the period between 1740 and 1938/1939 and address the intellectual significance of their work. Elegantly written and meticulously researched, Luft's book brings out the contributions of major figures such as Wittgenstein, Hofmannsthal, Musil, Kafka, Rilke, and Freud, but also draws attention to less well-known figures such as Bolzano, Brentano, Grillparzer, Stifter, Broch, and Hayek.
Book Synopsis Four-Handed Monsters by : Adrian Daub
Download or read book Four-Handed Monsters written by Adrian Daub and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of the nineteenth century, four-hand piano playing emerged across Europe as a popular pastime of the well-heeled classes and of those looking to join them. Nary a canonic work of classical music that was not set for piano duo, nary a house that could afford not to invest in them. Duets echoed from the student bedsit to Buckingham Palace, resounded in schools and in hundreds of thousands of bourgeois parlors. Like no other musical phenomenon, it could cross national, social, and economic boundaries, bringing together poor students with the daughters of the bourgeoisie, crowned heads with penniless virtuosi, and the nineteenth century often regarded it with extreme suspicion for that very reason. Four-hand piano playing was often understood as a socially acceptable way of flirting, a flurry of hands that made touching, often of men and women, not just acceptable but necessary. But it also became something far more serious than that, a central institution of the home, mediating between inside and outside, family and society, labor and leisure, nature and nurture. And writers, composers, musicians, philosophers, journalists, pamphleteers and painters took note: in the art, literature, and philosophy of the age, four-hand playing emerged as a common motif, something that allowed them to interrogate the very nature of the self, the family, the community and the state. In the four hands rushing up and down the same keyboard the nineteenth century espied, or thought to espy, an astonishing array of things. Four-Handed Monsters tells not only the story of that practice, but also the story of the astonishing array of things the nineteenth century read into it.
Book Synopsis Literature and Censorship in Restoration Germany by : Katy Heady
Download or read book Literature and Censorship in Restoration Germany written by Katy Heady and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2009 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects -- both inhibitory and creative -- of the 1819-1848 censorship on German-language literary writing. In 1819, the German Confederation promulgated the infamous "Carlsbad Decrees," establishing censorship standards aimed at thwarting the political aspirations of post-Napoleonic Germany's rapidly emerging public sphere. This most comprehensive system of state censorship to that point in German lands remained in place until the revolutions of 1848, and is widely acknowledged to have had a profound influence on public discourse. However, although censorship during the period has been the object of much scholarly interest, little is known about its precise effects on literary writing. This book redresses that situation through detailed studies of six works composed and published in different parts of the Confederation by three prominent writers: Christian Dietrich Grabbe, Heinrich Heine, and Franz Grillparzer. By analyzing successive versions of these works, the study illustrates the thematic, linguistic, and aesthetic constraints censorship placed upon their writing, as well as the variety of literary evasion strategies that it stimulated. It demonstrates that while censorship inhibited and distorted German literary writing, it also led to the emergence of distinctively complex and inventive modes of literary expression that came to mark the epoch. Katy Heady received her PhD in German from the University of Sheffield in 2007.

This book was released on 1995-06-14 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reeve provides a detailed discussion of Klesel's importance in Ein Bruderzwist in Habsburg and examines possible predecessors for the Federfuchser: Wurm from Friedrich von Schiller's Kabale und Liebe, the Sekretär in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Die natürliche Tochter, and Leonhard in Friedrich Hebbel's Maria Magdalene. He focuses on the features they share, such as deep-seated resentment of social superiors who, by a mere accident of birth, have power over them and, above all, the cunning that they use to overcome their social disqualifications.
