Book Synopsis The Spanish Colonial Settlement Landscapes of New Mexico, 1598-1680 by : Elinore M. Barrett
Download or read book The Spanish Colonial Settlement Landscapes of New Mexico, 1598-1680 written by Elinore M. Barrett and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish began to settle New Mexico in the sixteenth century, and although scholars have long known the names of those settlers, this is the first book to place the colonists on the map. Using documentary, genealogical, and archaeological sources, Elinore M. Barrett depicts the settlement patterns of Spaniards in New Mexico from the beginning of colonization in 1598 up to 1680, when the Pueblo Revolt forced the colonists to retreat for a time. Barrett describes the natural environment and the Pueblo villages that the Spanish colonists encountered, as well as the activities of the Spanish civil and religious establishments related to land, labor, and tribute and the mission and mining landscapes the colonists created. She also recounts the founding and settling of Santa Fe and analyzes demographic dynamics, adding a new dimension to studies of the colonial Southwest.

But nothing stranger than when a cowboy comes in and asks him to help fence a stolen $100,000 necklace. Thinking he has a deal with Croft, the cowboy leaves as mysteriously as he arrived. The next day he turns up dead, riddled with bullets, and the insurance company that already settled the claim for the necklace’s wealthy owners wants Croft’s beautiful, wheelchair-bound boss, Rita Mondragon, and her agency to get the missing jewelry back. As Croft starts to dig into the slain cowboy’s seedier, more sinister associates as well as the private lives of a privileged family with enough skeletons in their closets to populate a graveyard, he uncovers a lot more than some stolen jewels: pornography, drugs, Native American grave robbing, and multiple murders. Now he just has to stay alive long enough to put all the pieces together . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a book businesswomen can rally around and use as a manual, an expert in female board representation shows what it takes to get nominated to a corporate board and become a productive and respected member. This book blazes a trail. Rather than focusing on lack of opportunity or loudly calling for the appointment of more women to boards, it simply shows women what they can do to get on boards. In its pages, businesswomen will gain refreshing insights into the many opportunities that exist for them to rise to leadership. The result of two years' research and interviews, the book identifies specific steps a woman can take to become qualified and competent to serve at the very top—as a director on a for-profit corporate board. Arguing that women need to "learn from the leaders, " the author lets 15 female directors tell the truth about how to find a seat at the table. Each story is different; no one path or decision worked for every woman. Their advice closes each chapter, providing encouragement and perspective from over three decades of practical experience with public company boards.
