Book excerpt: In l967, when Georgene Dreishpoon and her husband Irving read a National Geographic article about the Bahamas, a mental seed was planted that would sprout seven years later when they embarked on an unforgettable and magical ferry ride to the island of Green Turtle Cay in the Bahamas. In her fascinating memoir, Pursuit of Paradise, Dreishpoon shares her experiences as a member of an American family who sought a fishing retreat in the Bahamas and, in the process, discovered lifelong friendships and ultimately faced the fact that even in paradise, the realities of life lurk in the background. For sixty days a year, the Dreishpoons left their life in America and lived on an island that captured their imaginations and their souls. Through entertaining anecdotes, Dreishpoon provides a glimpse into how her family immersed themselves in a new culture, learned to communicate with local inhabitants, and acquired a taste for new food--all while cherishing their time together as they experienced a new adventure. Pursuit of Paradise chronicles nearly twenty-five years of amazing stories of one family's extraordinary experiences on a beautiful Bahamian island that affected their philosophy of living and loving forever.

Download or read book A Friendly Green Turtle written by Jay B. Teasdel and published by . This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A FRIENDLY GREEN TURTLE Helplessly adrift in a small boat off of the Abacos in the Bahamas, an attractive and capable middle-aged woman tries to console her young grand daughter. It is an area rarely visited by boats of any kind. Death from dehydration and starvation is imminent. Four dolphins come to call. They sense the predicament and one of them goes for an aged Green Turtle. The turtle has been enjoying a relationship with the owner of a sailboat anchored in a remote cove on a nearby island. Thus begins the account of what happens to two successful individuals who are in the process of examining their lives in an effort to understand what really does constitute success in life. The woman and her husband own a prime penthouse condo overlooking Central Park in New York. They also have a get-away villa on the out-island of Elbow Cay. (Continued on back flap) The also middle-aged man is a major high-rise building contractor and developer from New Orleans. He is on a self-imposed sailing sabbatical in an effort to try to determine his real preferences in living and where he would next like to go with his options. He is solo except for an amiable West Highland terrier. Because of a misunderstanding and the currently precarious financial situation of the woman's husband back in New York, a mafia contract is placed on the man's head. In addition to dealing with the problems facing these two people and those close to them, including their near-death experiences, an insight is provided for consideration of what might actually be involved in the concept of Bahamas island living. Mid-life crisis? Luck of the draw? Self-induced psychotherapy for determining what individual preferences are realistically achievable in trying to maximize one's quality of life? These are addressed by those whom fate has thrown together on the paradise that is Hopetown, Elbow Cay.....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do It Yourself Bonefishing is the authoritative guide written for DIY anglers targeting bonefish on the fly. Divided into easy-to-reference sections, this book will help you tackle the why, where, and how of self-guided bonefishing. Informed by twenty years of experience on the flats, Rod Hamilton and Kirk Deeter describe the allure of matching wits with one of fly fishing’s most elusive targets and discuss the reasons why more and more fly fishermen are seeking the challenge of catching bonefish without the aid of a guide. Do It Yourself Bonefishing is packed with useful tips to help all levels of fly fishermen locate and catch more of one of the world’s premier gamefish. Learn stalking strategies, how to spot bonefish, appropriate fly selection, and where to find the fish. As you plan your bonefishing trip, the authors’ destination chapters and “Seven-Day Sample Trip” itineraries suggest where to fish, how to get there, and places to stay. Included is a list of more than 300 individual bonefish hotspots located throughout the tropics, complete with maps and tips specific to the flat or creek system. Within the “Spousal Rating” section are Hamilton’s opinions on how suitable the destination is for nonfishers; the “Nonfishing Activities” section highlights things to do when not fishing. Whether you need help deciding where to go or simply desire greater success while wading on your own, Do It Yourself Bonefishing is where you should start.
