Book Synopsis A Census of Greek Medical Manuscripts by : Alain Touwaide
Download or read book A Census of Greek Medical Manuscripts written by Alain Touwaide and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manuscripts containing Greek medical texts were inventoried by author and work at the beginning of the 20th century by a group of philologists under the direction of Hermann Diels. Useful as it was - and will continue to be – Diels’ catalogue omitted authors and works, misidentified manuscripts, and overlooked codices. Furthermore, since the publication of the catalogue, some libraries have adopted a new system of classification, manuscripts have been destroyed, items have changed location, and new ones have come to light. The present Census is a checklist of the Greek medical manuscripts currently known in collections worldwide. It is both an amended and updated index of Diels’ catalogue, and a list of the items missed or overlooked in Diels, or located since. Although it does not supersede Diels’ catalogue, it is the indispensable instrument for a New Diels, and will be the reference for years to come for any new critical edition and medico-historical research based on manuscripts, besides providing the basis for a broad range of other historical inquiries, from codicology to the history of medicine and science, including Byzantine intellectual history, Renaissance studies and humanism, history of the book and early printing, and the history of medical philology and learning.
Book Synopsis Greek Mythography in the Roman World by : Alan Cameron
Download or read book Greek Mythography in the Roman World written by Alan Cameron and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-02 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the Roman age the traditional stories of Greek myth had long since ceased to reflect popular culture. Mythology had become instead a central element in elite culture. If one did not know the stories one would not understand most of the allusions in the poets and orators, classics and contemporaries alike; nor would one be able to identify the scenes represented on the mosaic floors and wall paintings in your cultivated friends' houses, or on the silverware on their tables at dinner. Mythology was no longer imbibed in the nursery; nor could it be simply picked up from the often oblique allusions in the classics. It had to be learned in school, as illustrated by the extraordinary amount of elementary mythological information in the many surviving ancient commentaries on the classics, notably Servius, who offers a mythical story for almost every person, place, and even plant Vergil mentions. Commentators used the classics as pegs on which to hang stories they thought their students should know. A surprisingly large number of mythographic treatises survive from the early empire, and many papyrus fragments from lost works prove that they were in common use. In addition, author Alan Cameron identifies a hitherto unrecognized type of aid to the reading of Greek and Latin classical and classicizing texts--what might be called mythographic companions to learned poets such as Aratus, Callimachus, Vergil, and Ovid, complete with source references. Much of this book is devoted to an analysis of the importance evidently attached to citing classical sources for mythical stories, the clearest proof that they were now a part of learned culture. So central were these source references that the more unscrupulous faked them, sometimes on the grand scale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Byzantine world underwent a remarkable recovery of intellectual energy in the period following the recovery of Constantinople in 1261. The reaction of the emperors and their entourage of well-educated high officials to their political disasters was a deliberate revival of the glories of ancient Greek culture. The main subject of this book is the preservation and dissemination by this learned elite of such ancient literature, philosophy and science as still survived then, the development of editorial techniques which resulted in more complete and less corrupt texts, and their improvement buy the addition of commentaries and other innovations.
Book Synopsis Bibliophilos by : Charalambos Dendrinos
Download or read book Bibliophilos written by Charalambos Dendrinos and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is a Festschrift in honour of the distinguished Byzantinist Costas N. Constantinides. The title of the volume, Bibliophilos: Books and Learning in the Byzantine World, reflects Professor Constantinides’ major contribution to the fields of Greek palaeography, editions of Byzantine texts, Byzantine history, scholarship and education, and Cypriot manuscripts and culture. The volume is introduced by a preface and a tabula gratulatoria dedicated to the honorand, followed by twenty articles, written by seasoned and younger scholars, who are former colleagues and students of Professor Constantinides. These articles, which appear in alphabetical order, offer new material and shed fresh light to the study of Greek manuscripts, binders and scribes, and the life, works and activities of Byzantine scholars, teachers and students, providing editions of unpublished texts, including letters and poems, and exploring various aspects of Byzantine and Cypriot history, literature, art, science and culture. In the process the authors often challenge earlier views and offer new interpretations and insights. Bibliophilos is a book for the student, teacher and scholar of Byzantium in particular, and for every bibliophile in general.

Book Synopsis (Re)writing History in Byzantium by : Panagiotis Manafis
Download or read book (Re)writing History in Byzantium written by Panagiotis Manafis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have recently begun to study collections of Byzantine historical excerpts as autonomous pieces of literature. This book focuses on a series of minor collections that have received little or no scholarly attention, including the Epitome of the Seventh Century, the Excerpta Anonymi (tenth century), the Excerpta Salmasiana (eighth to eleventh centuries), and the Excerpta Planudea (thirteenth century). Three aspects of these texts are analysed in detail: their method of redaction, their literary structure, and their cultural and political function. Combining codicological, literary, and political analyses, this study contributes to a better understanding of the intertwining of knowledge and power, and suggests that these collections of historical excerpts should be seen as a Byzantine way of rewriting history. Book Synopsis Agenorid Myth in the ›Bibliotheca‹ of Pseudo-Apollodorus by : Johanna Astrid Michels
Download or read book Agenorid Myth in the ›Bibliotheca‹ of Pseudo-Apollodorus written by Johanna Astrid Michels and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 1130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bibliotheca of Pseudo-Apollodorus, perhaps the best-known mythographic text, stands out for its comprehensive aim and state of preservation. The handbook has regularly been disregarded as a repository of 'standard' myths or as a primary witness to archaic stories, a reductive view at once underestimating and romanticizing the merits of the Bibliotheca. This monograph unlocks the Bibliotheca as a literary work in its own right by offering the first systematic commentary on an essential selection, the Cretan and Theban myths in Bibl. III.1-56, and by presenting an in-depth analysis of the text. In so doing, this volume closes a gap in current research, from which a philological commentary is entirely missing. The main part of the study focuses on various aspects of composition and organization by addressing structuring principles, narratorial interventions, and the author's method and sources. It lays to rest persistent misconceptions about the representative character of the Bibliotheca's myths, the author's merits, and his source use, all of which have divided the scholarship to this date. In addition, it provides an update on the author, date, purpose and readership, text history, and book division of the Bibliotheca.

Book Synopsis Greek Scholars between East and West in the Fifteenth Century by : John Monfasani
Download or read book Greek Scholars between East and West in the Fifteenth Century written by John Monfasani and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the immense importance for the Renaissance of Greek émigrés to fifteenth-century Italy has long been recognized, much basic research on the phenomenon remains to be done. This new volume by John Monfasani gathers together fourteen studies filling in some of the gaps in our knowledge. The philosophers George Gemistus Pletho and George Amiroutzes, the great churchman Cardinal Bessarion, and the famous humanists George of Trebizond and Theodore Gaza are the subjects of some of the articles. Other articles treat the émigrés as a group within the wider frame of contemporary issues, such as humanism, the theological debate between the Orthodox and Roman Catholics, and the process of translating Greek texts into Latin. Furthermore, some notable Latin figures also enter into several of the articles in a detailed way, specifically, Nicholas of Cusa, Niccolò Perotti, and Pietro Balbi.
Book Synopsis A Tenth-Century Byzantine Military Manual: The Sylloge Tacticorum by :
Download or read book A Tenth-Century Byzantine Military Manual: The Sylloge Tacticorum written by and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sylloge Tacticorum is a mid-Byzantine example of the literary genre of military manuals or Taktika which stretches back to antiquity. It was one of a number produced during the tenth century CE, a period when the Byzantine empire enjoyed a large measure of success in its wars against its traditional enemy, the Arabs. Compiled to record and preserve military strategies, know-how, and tactics, the manual discusses a wide variety of matters: battle formations, raids, sieges, ambushes, surprise attacks, the treatment of prisoners of war and defectors, distribution of booty, punishment of military offences, how to mount effective espionage, and how to send and receive envoys. There is even advice on the personal qualities required by generals, on how to neutralize enemy horses, and on how to protect the troops against poisoned food. The work culminates in an account of the stratagems employed by great Greek and Roman military commanders of the past. While, like so much of Byzantine literature, the Sylloge often simply reproduces material found in earlier texts, it also preserves a great deal of information about the military tactics being developed by the Byzantine army during the tenth century. It is the first Byzantine source to record the reappearance of a specialized heavy cavalry (the kataphraktoi) and of a specialized infantry (the menavlatoi) used to repel the attacks of the opposing heavy cavalry. There is also a great deal of information on new infantry and cavalry formations and on the new tactics that required them. This is the first complete translation of the Sylloge into English. It is accompanied by a glossary of the specialised Greek military vocabulary used in the work and by footnotes which explain obscure references and identify the author’s classical and Byzantine sources. An introduction places the work in its historical and literary context and considers some of the questions that have remained unanswered over the centuries, such as its authorship and the date of its composition.
Book Synopsis Hippocratis De affectionibus / Hippocrates, On Affections by : Pilar Pérez Cañizares
Download or read book Hippocratis De affectionibus / Hippocrates, On Affections written by Pilar Pérez Cañizares and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A considerable number of ancient medical texts has not been yet edited drawing on the whole manuscript tradition. This is also the case of the treatise On Affections, a medical book traditionally transmitted as a part of the Hippocratic Corpus. This volume offers the first critical edition of On Affections that considers the whole manuscript and printed tradition. It also includes an exhaustive account of the history of the text, a translation into English and a commentary. On Affections is unique among the Hippocratic writings in that it presents itself as a medical handbook for intelligent lay readers and not for physicians. The book includes a systematic discussion of diseases, and has clear affinities with other Hippocratic texts. Furthermore, it also contains a catalogue of foods and their properties, the combination of these two topics being unparalleled in the rest of the extant treatises. References to other existing or yet-to-be-written medical books on different topics such as eye diseases, women diseases, tertian and quartan fevers and the recipe collection called On Drugs hint at the wide circulation and availability of written medical knowledge at the beginning of the fourth century BCE.
