They contain results, too, which have had the deepest and widest influence on the whole of modern life, in religion, in morality, in science, in politics, in litera ture. The thoughts of the great Greek thinkers have been bearing fruit in the world ever since they were first uttered. In some special sciences, the work done by the Greeks remains a basis of study to this day, as in Ethics and in Logic and in Geometry. It is in Greek historians and Greek orators that we read some of the political lessons most directly useful for our own time. Neither the history of Christian doc trine, nor the outer history of the Christian Church, can be fully understood without reference to the character and work of the Greek mind. Under the. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Abridged History of Greek Literature The same idea of the nature of history has led us, in our account of the literary activity of Greece, to devote some space to Christian writers. Hellenism, in fact, existed side by side with Christianity for three centuries before disappearing to make room for the new religion. Hence the gradual modification which is an integral part of its history. One can understand neither the last pagan nor the first Christian writers if one separates arbitrarily the two currents that ran so long beside each other and eventually merged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greek Classics, Vol. 2: Epic Literature, Part II The ancient record is in large part lost, in large part blurred and become difficult of decipherment. But much has been preserved, either actually and immediately, or mediate ly and indirectly in the tokens of influences on other civiliza tions; and by the use of methods and instruments of ever increasing precision in philological research the difficulties of decipherment are nearly met. Thus by the aid of hints that we'have we can discover anew in some measure what we have not. For, as Terence says, there is nothing so difficult that it may not be found out by searching. Book Synopsis From Homer to Theocritus by : Edward Capps
Download or read book From Homer to Theocritus written by Edward Capps and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Homer to Theocritus: A Manual of Greek Literature This volume aims to present a concise but complete survey of the Greek literature of the classical period, extended so as to include the two branches of poetry, the New Comedy and the Idyll, which were brought to perfection after the overthrow of Greek liberty by Alex ander. I have tried, so far as space would permit, to place in their proper setting each branch of literature and each author, keeping constantly in mind the course of development of the literature as a whole. Selections from representative English translations are quoted in connection with the principal authors, more extensively for the poets than for the writers of prose. It is hoped that this feature of the book will be found acceptable, both to the general reader who has not the time, even if he has the training and equipment, for comprehen sive readings in the Greek texts, and to the average student whose attainments in Greek are not sufliciently extensive to furnish an adequate background for the most profitable study of the ordinary manuals. In the choice of selections I have been guided mainly by my own judgment of the merits of existing translations, so taras they were known or accessible to me; but the determining consideration in many instances has been the accessibility of a translation to the general public. Download or read book The Greek View of Life (Classic Reprint) written by G. Lowes Dickinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greek View of Life The following pages are intended to serve as a general introduction to Greek literature and thought, for those, primarily, who do not know Greek. Whatever opinions may be held as to the value of translations, it seems clear that it is only by their means that the majority of modern readers can attain to any knowledge of Greek culture; and as I believe that culture to be still, as it has been in the past, the most valuable element of a liberal education, I have hoped that such an attempt as the present to give, with the help of quotations from the original authors, some general idea of the Greek view of life, will not be regarded as labour thrown away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Greek Literature I harboured for many years the project of producing these five Essays on Greek together with others on Latin and English Literature; but I have been advised on good authority that such a collection would be incongruous and unacceptable. I had thought of endeavouring to bring the studies more up-to-date; but in some cases there seemed little to add, and in others such an attempt would have run counter to the original design.
